MORE TO THE STORY" The Good Samaritan

This sermon explores Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25–37 as part of FBB's summer series through the parables. What begins as a lawyer's question about inheriting eternal life quickly exposes a deeper issue: instead of asking how to love others, he's looking for the limits of who deserves his love. Jesus responds by telling a story that turns those expectations upside down, revealing that the real question isn't, "Who is my neighbor?" but, "Will I become a neighbor to the person in need?"

Through the contrast between the priest, the Levite, and the Samaritan, this message highlights three marks of a good neighbor: caring compassion, gracious generosity, and courageous commitment. Compassion isn't just a feeling, it is a choice and a tool for the betterment of God's creation on earth. Generosity uses what God has entrusted to us for the good of others. Commitment stays present long after the immediate crisis has passed. Together, these qualities paint a picture of the kind of love Jesus calls his followers to live out every day.

The sermon also reminds us that the Good Samaritan ultimately points beyond itself to Jesus. We are the wounded traveler, and Christ is the one who came to us, healed our wounds, paid our debt, and promised to return. Because we have received that kind of mercy, we are now sent to extend it to others. The message closes with a challenge to stop asking where love ends and instead become the kind of people who reflect the compassion of Christ to whoever is in front of us.

Preacher: Matt Armendarez, Student Minister

Scripture: Luke 10:25–37, Deuteronomy 6:4–5, Leviticus 19:18, Numbers 19:11

First Burleson · Watch on YouTube

MORE TO THE STORY: The Wise and Foolish Builders

This sermon walks through Jesus' parable of the wise and foolish builders in Luke 6:46-49, part of the church's summer series through the parables. Both builders construct homes that look similar on the outside, but only one takes the time to dig deep and lay a foundation on rock. When the storm comes, the difference between the two houses has nothing to do with appearance and everything to do with what lies underneath.

The main point is simple but searching: it's not what you know, it's who you know and follow. Knowing facts about Jesus isn't the same as building your life on him through obedience. This message will encourage anyone who has ever wondered whether their faith is more talk than practice, and it offers real hope that a life built on Christ can stand firm no matter what storms come.

The sermon closes with a call to seek wisdom rather than just information, and a reminder that foundations are built long before the storms arrive, not during them. It ends with an invitation to come to Jesus, hear him, and obey him, wherever someone finds themselves in that progression.

Preacher: Chris Wigley, Lead Pastor

Scripture: Luke 6:46–49, Matthew 7:24–27, Proverbs 4:7, James 1:5, James 1:22, John 14:6, 1 Peter 4:12

First Burleson · Watch on YouTube
