First Class Fool: Solo Traveller's Survival Guide

About First Class Fool: Solo Traveller's Survival Guide

A comic-practical First Class Fool travel series for nervous solo travellers. Across airports, cruises, hotels, trains, city breaks, budget trips, restaurants, luggage, tours, and day excursions, each book turns common anxieties into manageable routines. The tone is warm, self-mocking, and reassuring, replacing glossy travel fantasies with honest advice about hidden fees, confusing transport, awkward meals, packing regret, safety, scams, and asking for help. The recurring message is that confidence is not natural elegance, but small recoveries from public confusion. Solo travel becomes less a test of bravery than a funny, practical path to independence and quiet freedom. City Breaks

A city break sounds wonderfully manageable: a few days, one bag, a comfortable place to sleep, and enough sightseeing to return home with photographs of buildings you can’t quite name. But city breaks can also involve a maze of transport maps, unfamiliar streets, hidden fees, and the sudden conviction that everyone else knows exactly where they’re going. If you’re travelling alone, that feeling can get loud. The good news is that you don’t need to become a fearless urban explorer. You just need a plan with room to breathe. First, choose a city that will be kind to your first-day nerves. The trendiest or cheapest destination isn’t always the best fit. Look at how you’ll get from the airport or station to your accommodation, whether public transport is easy to understand, and what the neighbourhood is like after dark. A bargain room far from food, transport, and anything you recognise may turn out to be expensive in time, energy, and taxi fares. Check the full journey, not just the price on the booking page. Future you, arriving tired with a suitcase, deserves a vote. Then make arrival day deliberately boring—in the best possible way. Get to your accommodation, check in, charge your phone, find water, and eat something. That’s a successful first day. You do not need to sprint between five monuments before dinner to prove you’re making the most of the trip. Once you’ve settled in, choose one nearby walk or easy attraction. Small wins count: finding the right bus, ordering lunch, and getting back to your room without consulting your map at every street corner are all signs that the city is becoming less mysterious. For getting around, use your phone’s map, but don’t treat it as an infallible oracle. Download maps in advance, learn the name of your nearest stop, and check the destination and direction before boarding. Group sights by area instead of zigzagging across town like an anxious bee. Leave gaps in your schedule for queues, weather, sore feet, and the café you spot just when you need to sit down. A city break is not a competitive itinerary. You’re allowed to skip a famous attraction if you’d rather spend an hour in a park or wander through a market. Eating alone can feel like the biggest hurdle of all, which is strange when you consider that hunger is usually what brought you to the restaurant. Start where it feels comfortable: a bakery, food hall, café, or casual counter. When you’re ready, try a restaurant. The waiter is not writing a tragic poem about your table for one; everyone else is busy with their own dinner. Bring a book or look around, but you don’t have to perform confidence. You’re allowed to be hungry, tired, and mainly interested in the menu. Keep the practical basics close: a charged phone, a backup payment method, any essential medication, and a little knowledge of how to get home. Be sensible about late-night routes and alcohol, and walk away from pushy sales pitches or plans that don’t feel right. Most travel problems are not disasters; they’re small puzzles that need one calm decision at a time. Ask someone official, find a well-lit place to pause, and sort out the next step—not the entire holiday at once. The best city breaks aren’t the ones where nothing goes wrong. They’re the ones where you get a bit lost, recover, find dinner, and realise you can handle more than you thought. You may come home with sore feet, several photographs of doorways, and the encouraging thought: I could do that again. Train Tips

Train travel is often presented as a graceful glide through the countryside. The brochure leaves out the departure board that changes its mind, the suitcase with one rebellious wheel, and the announcement delivered in what sounds like a sock. In this episode of First Class Fool , we’re sharing train tips for solo travellers who want the freedom of the rails without accidentally ending up in Belgium—or at least without doing it twice. First: check the details on your ticket before you reach the platform. Look for the departure time, train number, final destination and any seat reservation. A train’s destination on the sign may be the end of the line, not the name of the town you’re visiting, so match the train number and route rather than relying on one familiar word. Also check whether your ticket is valid only on a specific service, or whether it allows more flexibility. The small print is not exciting, but it’s usually less exciting than explaining to an inspector why you boarded a theoretical cousin of your train. Second: give yourself a little breathing room at the station. Find the departure board, locate your train, and check again when the platform appears. Some stations announce platforms early; others reveal them with the timing of a game-show host. Once you’re on the platform, confirm the train’s destination and, if relevant, your carriage number. If something doesn’t make sense, ask a member of staff. Looking confused in a station is not a crime, and asking one clear question can save a long journey in the wrong direction. Third: make luggage manageable. A bag that feels fine in an airport can become a wheeled argument on stairs, crowded platforms and narrow train aisles. Choose something you can lift and steer yourself, and keep essential items—medication, documents, phone, wallet and a charger—where you can reach them. On board, use the luggage racks thoughtfully, keep valuables close, and avoid blocking doors or aisles. If your reserved seat and your bag seem to be in different parts of the train, pause and work out the arrangement before the doors close. There’s no prize for performing a panicked luggage relay. Finally, make a small plan for when things go wrong. Delays, platform changes and missed connections happen. Check the operator’s updates, ask staff what your options are, and take the next step rather than trying to solve the entire railway system at once. If you have a connection, know how much time you have and where you need to go. Keep water and a snack handy, too: it is remarkably difficult to remain reasonable while hungry beside a departure board. The best train tips aren’t about looking like a seasoned rail expert. They’re simple habits: check the ticket, check the board, confirm the train, and ask for help when you need it. You may still take the wrong staircase or sit down with your bag in the seat beside you. That’s all part of the learning curve. The real win is catching the right train, settling in, and letting the scenery do some of the work for a change. Packing List

There is a particular moment before a solo trip when the suitcase is open, the bed is covered in clothes, and you begin packing for three different climates, two imaginary emergencies and a version of yourself who suddenly attends formal events. Today, we’re making a packing list that helps you travel comfortably without giving every anxious thought its own zip compartment. First, pack for the trip you’re actually taking. Think about how long you’ll be away, the weather, what you’ll be doing and how often you can do laundry. Choose clothes that work together, can be layered and feel comfortable after a long day. Then be honest about the shoes. You probably need fewer pairs than you think, and every extra pair is something you’ll have to lift, carry and squeeze into a bag that may already be resisting your plans. Second, give the essentials their own priority. Keep travel documents, payment cards, keys, phone, charger, any necessary medication and important contact information easy to find. Put medication and anything you can’t afford to lose in your hand luggage, while checking the relevant airline rules for liquids, batteries and cabin baggage. A small supply of basic items—like plasters, tissues and pain relief you normally use—can be useful, but there’s no need to pack a portable pharmacy for every possible inconvenience. Third, choose luggage for the journey, not just for the photograph. A case that rolls beautifully through an airport may be a different creature on cobbles, stairs or a train with a narrow aisle. Consider where you’ll be going and whether you can manage the bag alone on a tired day. Check size and weight limits before you leave, especially if you’re flying. The cheapest fare can become less charming when a baggage fee appears at the airport, alongside the public performance of reorganising your belongings on the floor. Fourth, use a short “just in case” test. For each extra item, ask: will I genuinely use this, can I buy or borrow it if needed, and is it worth carrying? A warm layer, rain protection or spare charging cable may earn its place. A special outfit for an event that hasn’t been planned may not. Packing cubes can help organise things, but they aren’t magic; folding anxiety neatly doesn’t make it lighter. Before you close the bag, leave a little room. Check the weather, confirm your accommodation and transport details, and make sure the items you’ll need first are accessible. Keep a change of clothes and basic toiletries in your cabin bag when practical, in case checked luggage is delayed. Then stop packing. There is a point where another shirt adds no comfort, only weight. The best packing list isn’t the longest or most impressive. It’s the one that gives you what you need without making every station, staircase and hotel check-in harder than it has to be. You don’t have to become a minimalist saint. Just pack for the real trip, carry what you can manage, and remember: competence sometimes looks like having the right charger—and sometimes it looks like pretending you meant to wear the same jumper twice.
