[…] In the original conception, there were only seven point-of-view characters and a couple of, you might say, inanimate objects. But the challenge that came later when I went back to it was not so much about what to do with the original idea per se, because the question of gentrification and other issues that were at play in the work originally remained relevant. The larger question was, how do I, as the writer I am at this moment, make use of this material that was written when I was a different writer? And I think that is what the predominant challenge was in in delivering this how did you approach this being a different writer when you started to write this book well you know one one thing i i should tell you up front about this project is that it went through several phases so it was at one point almost 1100 pages long and it at another point took the form of an extended trial, if you will.
