DAY 215: 2 Chronicles 32–33
Chronicles revisits Hezekiah and Manasseh to reveal something remarkable about the mercy of God. Hezekiah trusts the Lord when Assyria surrounds Jerusalem, confessing that the enemy possesses only an arm of flesh while Judah has the Lord fighting for her. God answers prayer and destroys the Assyrian army. Yet after deliverance, Hezekiah becomes proud, reminding us that sometimes victory tests the heart more severely than danger. Then comes Manasseh, one of Judah’s most wicked kings. He fills Jerusalem with idolatry, sorcery, corrupted worship, and bloodshed until God finally sends Assyria to drag him away in chains. And there, in Babylon, the unthinkable happens: Manasseh humbles himself, prays, and God hears him. The king who desecrated the Temple returns to Jerusalem removing idols and restoring the Lord’s altar. His repentance cannot erase every consequence of decades of corruption, but his restoration demonstrates the astonishing reach of sovereign grace. Ultimately, these chapters point us to Jesus Christ. The innocent King is bound so rebels can be released. He bears judgment so the guilty can receive mercy. Manasseh’s story does not tell us that sin is small. It tells us that Christ’s grace is greater. No history is too stained, no heart too hardened, and no exile too distant for the Savior who died and rose again.

DAY 214: 2 Kings 20–21
DAY 214: 2 Kings 20–21
Isaiah has just carried us to the heights of new creation, but 2 Kings brings us crashing back into the weakness of Judah’s earthly kings. Hezekiah receives fifteen additional years of life, yet miraculous deliverance does not cure his pride. When Babylonian envoys arrive, he proudly displays Judah’s treasures, and Isaiah announces that those very treasures and some of his descendants will eventually be carried into Babylon. Then Manasseh takes the throne and systematically reverses his father’s reforms. He rebuilds pagan high places, worships Baal and the host of heaven, practices sorcery, fills the Temple with idols, and sheds innocent blood throughout Jerusalem. The lesson is devastating: reform can clean a building, but it cannot regenerate a heart. One generation’s faithfulness cannot automatically produce the next generation’s obedience. Judah needs more than another reforming king. She needs a perfectly faithful Son of David. Jesus Christ is that King. Hezekiah receives additional years but eventually dies; Christ enters death and destroys it. Hezekiah displays his treasures in pride; Christ possesses all things yet humbles Himself and gives His riches to His people. Manasseh fills Jerusalem with innocent blood; Christ is the truly Innocent One whose blood is shed in Jerusalem to cleanse the guilty. Cyrus can release captives, Hezekiah can reform worship, and earthly kings can accomplish temporary good, but only the suffering and risen Servant can bear sin, pour out the Spirit, gather the nations, and bring the new creation Isaiah promised.

DAY 213: Isaiah 64–66
DAY 213: Isaiah 64–66
Isaiah closes with a desperate prayer and a breathtaking answer. The prophet cries, “Oh, that You would rend the heavens and come down,” confessing that Israel cannot save herself and that even her righteous deeds cannot earn restoration. Yet the Lord answers not merely by repairing what exile destroyed, but by promising something far greater: new heavens and a new earth. Rebellion will be judged, a faithful remnant will be preserved, Jerusalem will rejoice, creation itself will be renewed, and people from every nation and tongue will be gathered to worship the Lord. Isaiah also makes clear that outward religion is not enough. God looks to the humble and contrite person who trembles at His Word. Ultimately, these chapters point directly to Jesus Christ. In Him, God truly comes down. Through His perfect obedience and sacrifice, sinners are cleansed, and through His resurrection, new creation begins within the old. Christ now gathers worshipers from every nation, and His advancing kingdom is moving history toward the day when resurrection triumphs, every enemy is removed, and the renewal Isaiah promised reaches its glorious completion.
