My Wife Won't Let Me Reach Moksha | Fly & Butterfly Ep 19

Mahitha has made it clear: Vishnu is not reaching moksha without her. Between seven lives of marriage, coming back as a chicken or a shrimp, and snoring through an entire Art of Living meditation class, his odds aren't great. Plus: Meta glasses so she can track him, the "rogue AI husband" who started thinking for himself, stolen "Diwali edition" bags, and 17 six-year-olds at one birthday party. Episode 19 of Fly & Butterfly — Vishnu Vaka and Mahitha on marriage, moksha, surveillance, and the dangers of a husband who starts thinking for himself. Hindus say you're married for seven lives, so what happens if one of you reaches moksha first? Mahitha isn't taking that chance. We get into who comes back as a cow, a chicken or a shrimp, the story of Valmiki, and why Vishnu will never reach moksha anyway (the Art of Living class is still recovering from his snoring). Plus Meta glasses so Mahitha can see exactly where Vishnu is looking, and his "Of course I talk to myself" T-shirt as Exhibit A that he's become a rogue AI husband. Why Does Ganesha Have an Elephant Head? The Full Story | Episode 18 B

Why Does Ganesha Have an Elephant Head? The Full Story | Episode 18B — It’s Deeper Than We Thought We grew up hearing stories about Lord Ganesha. But as adults, have we ever stopped to ask what those stories might actually be trying to tell us? In this episode of Fly & Butterfly, Vishnu and Mahitha continue their Ganesh Chaturthi conversation by going deeper into the stories, symbolism and philosophy surrounding Ganesha. We talk about how Parvati created Ganesha, the story behind his elephant head, why Ganesha is associated with removing obstacles, and why he is traditionally worshipped before beginning something new. Then we get into some of the stories many of us heard growing up — including Ganesha and the moon, the Ganesh Chaturthi tradition of avoiding the moon before completing the puja, and the famous competition between Ga

Ganesh Chaturthi: Everything We Miss About Growing Up in India | Episode 18 A

What starts as a conversation about Ganesh Chaviti quickly turns into a trip through our childhoods in India — the festivals, family traditions, schools, religion, and beliefs that shaped the way we see the world today. Vishnu remembers growing up with stories of Ganesha, waking up early with the neighborhood kids to collect patri for the puja, visiting different Ganesh celebrations, and the excitement surrounding the festival and Nimajjanam. And, of course, he somehow manages to personally identify with Ganesha because of one childhood incident involving way too much sambar rice. 😂 From there, we go back to our school days. Both of us attended Christian/convent schools while growing up Hindu, leading to some funny — and surprisingly meaningful — memories about nuns, church, cricket, prayer, and learning about different religions while still practicing our own traditions. The conversation eventually becomes bigger than Ganesh Chaviti. We talk about why Hindu traditions use physical representations of God, what rituals meant to us as children versus what they mean to us now, and what it was like growing up in an India where Hindu, Christian and Muslim traditions could all be part of your everyday life. Later, we get into Jyotisha, astrology, faith and belief — including how our relationship with these ideas has changed over time and whether sometimes the power of belief itself can give people reassurance when life feels uncertain. And Mahitha shares a prediction she was once given about the person she would eventually marry… which becomes especially interesting considering she ended up marrying someone named Vishnu. In this episode: Celebrating Ganesh Chaviti growing up in India Vishnu's childhood connection to Ganesha — and sambar rice 😂 Family pujas and childhood festival traditions Waking up early to collect patri for Ganesha Ganesh idols and the tradition of Nimajjanam What religious rituals meant to us as children Growing up Hindu while attending Christian/convent schools Nuns, cricket and unforgettable school memories Being exposed to different religions while growing up in India Hinduism, Christianity and the interfaith experiences we remember Why people use images and idols as part of prayer How our understanding of religion changes as we get older Jyotisha, astrology and traditional beliefs The psychology of faith and reassurance The surprising prediction Mahitha received about her future husband This episode is less about explaining religion and more about remembering what it actually felt like to grow up around these traditions — before we started questioning, analyzing and trying to understand them as adults. If you grew up in India, how much of this feels familiar to you? And if you're raising kids outside India, which traditions from your childhood are you trying to keep alive? Fly & Butterfly is a conversation between Vishnu and Mahitha about marriage, family, culture, comedy, growing up Indian and everything we somehow end up arguing about along the way.

The Biopic | Fly and Butterfly Podcast Episode 17

Episode 17: The Biopic We didn’t set out to record Vishnu’s life story…but somehow that’s exactly what happened. In this episode of Fly & Butterfly, Vishnu and Mahitha start with a conversation about health, energy, motherhood and marriage, and eventually find themselves going all the way back to Vishnu’s childhood in India. Vishnu shares what it was like when his parents moved to America while he stayed behind with extended family, the sacrifices his family made in search of a better life, and the losses that shaped him during those years. The conversation then moves into immigration, how India has changed, whether moving to America still represents the same opportunity it once did, and how our idea of the “American Dream” changes depending on where we are in life. And then comes one of the best stories of the episode: after moving to America in high school and barely speaking English, Vishnu was nominated for senior class president as a prank. Instead of walking away, he decided to run. That decision led to controversial campaign posters, a trip to the vice principal’s office, an entire hallway chanting his slogan, and enough votes to force a runoff election. We also get into Vishnu’s first experiences learning American history, his adventures at Model UN, our early m

AI, Social Media & Parenting: Are We All Addicted? | Fly and Butterfly Ep. 15

Fly and Butterfly Podcast Episode 15 This episode is a long, fast-moving debate between Vishnu and Maitha about AI, social media, parenting, and how technology is changing human behavior. They use ChatGPT as a jumping-off point, but the conversation expands into a bigger argument about moderation, responsibility, and whether older generations are equipped to guide kids through today’s information overload.Vishnu and Maitha both contribute heavily throughout, with Vishnu mostly arguing that AI and social media are useful tools when used in moderation, while Maitha pushes the idea that parents, not just platforms, need to take more responsibility for how kids consume information. Key topics In this episode: ChatGPT as a glorified search engine Vishnu explains how he sees large language models as vector database powered tools that search and repackage information rather than true intelligence. Maitha pushes back, arguing that the tool feels smarter because it remembers context and gives answers tailored to the user. The future of personalized AI assistants The two joke about everyone eventually having their own bot with a personalized voice and style. They imagine a world where people rely on AI for everyday advice, emotional support, and even voice cloning for navigation and household use. Why convenience weakens human connection Maitha argues that AI makes it too easy to ask questions without building the social bonds that used to come from asking a parent, friend, or relative. Vishnu agrees that people are asking more questions without processing the answers or reflecting on consequences. Technology as a tool, not the problem Vishnu repeatedly says the issue is not AI itself but addiction, overuse, and letting the tool control behavior. He compares modern information access to earlier tools like manuals, libraries, and dictionaries, saying every generation had a version of this shift. Parents, kids, and the loss of guidance Maitha argues that kids today are exposed to too much content without enough adult guidance, especially on phones and social platforms. Vishnu agrees parents need to be more present, but also points out that many parents are just as addicted and unprepared as their children. Social media, reels, and algorithmic addiction They criticize autoplay reels, endless scrolling, and recommendation systems that push people deeper into passive consumption. Maitha says platforms make addiction easier by removing friction, while Vishnu says users need more conscious control over what they consume. How information changes politics and public opinion Vishnu argues that access to alternative information has changed how younger generations see war, racism, and global politics. They discuss how news channels, governments, and platforms can shape narratives, and how Gen Z is more likely to question them. Immigrant family pressure and mental health They talk about immigrant parents who equate financial sacrifice with emotional support, often missing the depression or stress their kids are experiencing. The conversation touches on how kids from immigrant households may feel split between cultures and unsupported at home. Culture, identity, and assimilation Vishnu talks about growing up between Indian and American worlds, and how some families either erase their culture entirely or reduce it to shallow traditions. They discuss how kids can feel inferior if they are not taught the deeper stories, history, and context of their background. Bad outcomes when kids are left alone with powerful tools Maitha brings up extreme examples like kids accessing harmful content or using AI without enough supervision. They land on the idea that adults need to teach judgment, not just block access. Timestamps 00:00 - Recording setup and mistrust of ChatGPT 03:20 - Voice cloning, navigation prompts, and personalized assistants 07:11 - How vector databases and LLMs work 10:00 - Why AI reduces human connection 11:31 - Power, water, and how convenience changes behavior 15:40 - Technology helping lawyers and legal research 17:27 - Vishnu jokes about becoming a lawyer and politician 19:23 - Chris Christie, Trump, and political satire 22:02 - Generational values and fairness 23:36 - Meta, Instagram, and how platforms profile users 26:04 - Reels, autoplay,

She Wants to Tattoo Me?! 😂 | Marriage, Kids & Indian Parents | Fly & Butterfly Ep. 14

What starts as a funny argument about rings, tattoos, and proving you’re married turns into a much deeper conversation about relationships, parenting, trust, and how childhood shapes the way we behave as adults. In this episode of Fly & Butterfly, Vishnu and Mahitha talk about everything from why Vishnu refuses to wear a ring, whether tattooing your spouse’s name is too much, bathroom privacy, and personal space — to pursuers and withdrawers, Indian parenting, raising kids with trust instead of fear, and why awareness matters more than age. We also get into how different children need different parenting, why strict parenting can sometimes make kids hide important things, and why parents should be the safest people their children can come to when something goes wrong.
