What's next with skill games now that they're illegal in Pennsylvania?
Skill games are now illegal in Pennsylvania. The change comes after state lawmakers couldn’t reach a deal to tax and regulate the devices -- which resemble slot machines -- and three legislators failed in their attempt to convince the state Supreme Court to allow more time (https://penncapital-star.com/government-politics/pa-attorney-generals-office-opposes-extending-skill-games-deadline/) to figure it out.
The justices had already given the General Assembly 120 days to do so back in June, when they ruled the devices are illegal (https://penncapital-star.com/criminal-justice/skill-games-are-unlawful-pennsylvania-supreme-court-finds/) – and stayed that decision to afford the legislature an opportunity to develop regulations.
WITF's Haley O'Brien (https://penncapital-star.com/economy/pa-nonprofits-businesses-look-to-replace-revenue-from-skill-games/) and WESA's Tom Riese (https://www.wesanews.org/politics-government/2026-10-13/skill-games-illegal-deadline) talked to stakeholders as the ruling takes effect.

Surging black lung rates concentrated among miners in Pennsylvania, other Appalachian states
A new study found that rates for black lung disease in Appalachia – including in Pennsylvania – are surging. The findings come as the Trump administration has put regulations that could reduce miners’ exposure to the dust associated with the disease on ice.
NPR investigations correspondent Howard Berkes has been following this story for years. Berkes, who retired in 2019, continues to report on the issue for NPR, Public Health Watch and Kentucky Public Radio, as well as Frontline PBS. He recently joined Reid Frazier of The Allegheny Front (https://www.alleghenyfront.org/) to talk about the latest developments.
