Build Your Dream Fantasy League: Finding & Vetting the Right League Mates

Laying the Foundation: Building a Fantasy League That Lasts | The Home League Show - Episode 16 Welcome back to The Home League Show, where we're all about helping fantasy football leagues raise the bar—one draft, one tradition, one connection at a time. This episode is focused on building the ultimate fantasy football league from the ground up—and it all starts with the most important piece of all: the people in your league. Because you can have the best settings, the most detailed rules, and the perfect format… but without the right group, your league won't last. ⸻ The True Foundation of Great Leagues Fantasy leagues aren't built on settings—they're built on people. Kevin and Joey break down why: Engagement is the lifeblood of every league Alignment matters more than talent Great leagues are driven by personalities, rivalries, and traditions If your league feels flat, inconsistent, or disconnected… the issue usually isn't structure—it's the foundation. ⸻ League Size & Structure Impact How big should your league be—and does it even matter? 12 teams as the ideal balance Smaller leagues = more casual, star-heavy builds Larger leagues = deeper strategy and commitment Key takeaway: An active 10-team league will always outperform a disengaged 14-team league. ⸻ Where to Find the Right League Mates Not all leagues are created equal—and neither are the people in them. Kevin and Joey explore where great leagues begin: Friends & family Coworkers and classmates Local communities and social groups Online platforms and fantasy communities And why being intentional in your selection process changes everything. ⸻ Chemistry, Culture & Long-Term Success The best leagues feel like a second home. This episode dives into: Building the right mix of personalities Creating a culture of competition and connection Encouraging engagement beyond game day Why one bad fit can disrupt an entire league Because culture isn't accidental—it's built and protected. ⸻ The Ideal League Mate (And Red Flags to Avoid) What should you actually look for when building your league? Core traits: Reliability Engagement Sportsmanship Consistency Personality Red flags: Quitting when losing Lack of communication Toxic behavior "It's just a game" mentality used as an excuse Bottom line: Protect the league over accommodating individuals. ⸻ The Vetting Process (Separate Your League)** Great leagues don't just happen—they're curated. Learn how to: Evaluate personality and communication style Use mock drafts or trial leagues Ask the right questions before inviting someone in Core question: "Will this person make the league better?" ⸻ Building Something Bigger Than a League Fantasy leagues are long-term ecosystems. The goal isn't just competition—it's creating: Connection Tradition Ongoing engagement Because the best leagues don't just play together… they stay together. ⸻ Looking Ahead This episode sets the stage for a full offseason series on building the ultimate fantasy league. Next up: League Structure & Formats Platforms Draft types Playoff systems And everything that shapes your league experience ⸻ Final Thought Rosters are built. But communities are chosen. Be intentional. Choose wisely. Protect the culture. Because when you get the people right—everything else falls into place. ⸻ Links and Resources Footballguys https://www.footballguys.com The Commissioner's Playbook (by Kevin Murray) https://amzn.to/4nT7AvC

The Dynasty Playbook (Part 4 of 4): Commissioner Leadership & The Dynasty Constitution

The Dynasty Playbook (Part 4 of 4): Commissioner Leadership & The Dynasty Constitution | The Home League Show Welcome back to The Home League Show, where we celebrate the foundation of fantasy football — the home league experience. Hosted by Kevin Murray and Joey Wright, this episode wraps up our four-part Dynasty Playbook series with the most important topic of all: Leadership. Because dynasty leagues don't fail because of bad rosters… they fail because of bad structure. In Part 4, Kevin and Joey give you the blueprint to build a dynasty league that lasts for years — not just seasons — by focusing on commissioner mindset, governance, and creating a rock-solid dynasty constitution. ⸻ The Dynasty Commissioner Mindset Dynasty leagues are different. They require a completely different level of leadership and long-term thinking. Kevin explains that commissioners aren't just managing a season — they're managing: • Multi-year assets • Long-term relationships • A constantly evolving league economy Joey adds that the commissioner role shifts from season manager to league architect and guide. Core responsibilities include: • Clear and consistent communication • Full financial transparency (especially with future dues) • Consistent rule enforcement • Neutral trade oversight (process over opinion) • Conflict resolution In dynasty, every decision compounds — and inconsistency early can create major problems later. ⸻ Building a Dynasty League That Lasts Kevin and Joey outline 10 foundational concepts every dynasty league must get right: League Identity Drives Everything • Competitive vs casual • Friend groups vs industry leagues • Trading culture and activity level Depth Defines Dynasty • Shallow leagues feel like redraft Superflex Changes Everything • Increases positional scarcity and trade value Rookie Draft Integrity • Linear drafts • Smart draft order systems (like Max PF) Trading Is the Lifeblood • Future picks must be tradable • Active trade culture is essential Waivers Still Matter • FAAB systems keep engagement high Anti-Tanking Structure • Max PF and lineup expectations Playoff & Incentive Design • Keep all teams engaged Governance Wins Leagues • Clear rules and voting processes Plan for Longevity • Orphan teams • Replacement owners • Multi-year dues Get these right, and your league has a chance to thrive. ⸻ The Dynasty Constitution: Your League's Blueprint This is where everything comes together. Kevin and Joey walk through how to build a complete dynasty constitution that protects your league and creates long-term stability: Key Sections to Include: • League overview and identity • Year-round league calendar • Rosters and lineup structure • Scoring systems and competitive balance tools • Rookie draft structure and player pipeline • Waivers and free agency rules • Trading system and philosophy • Financial structure and dues • Anti-tanking policies • Playoff format and incentives • Orphan team management • Governance and rule changes • Dispute resolution • Contingency planning • "Best interest of the league" clause Dynasty leagues are 12-month ecosystems — and your constitution should reflect that. ⸻ The "Edge" Settings That Separate Great Leagues Once the foundation is built, small tweaks can elevate your league: • League Median Scoring → reduces weekly luck • Max Potential Points → prevents tanking • Taxi Squads → adds long-term strategy • Empire Pots → increases long-term stakes • Tiered payouts and weekly prizes → boost engagement These aren't required — but they're often what separates good leagues from great ones. ⸻ Protecting Your League From Failure Most dynasty leagues don't collapse overnight — they fade. Kevin and Joey highlight warning signs: • Orphan teams stacking up • Owners not paying ahead • No trade activity • Drama outweighing fun • No clear path to rebuild And solutions: • Empire resets • Full league reboot • Replacing inactive managers • Merging leagues A great commissioner is proactive, not reactive. ⸻ The Bigger Picture Dynasty isn't just about keeping players. It's about building something that lasts. It's about: • Community • Consistency • Connection Done right, your league becomes more than a game — it becomes a meaningful part of people's lives. ⸻ Looking Ahead The Dynasty Playbook series may be complete — but we're just getting started. Coming soon: • Startup mock drafts • Rookie mock drafts • More league-building content all offseason ⸻ Watch This Episode 📺 Stream the full episode here: https://streamyard.com/9u8wn3bghr ⸻ Links and Resources Footballguys Website https://www.footballguys.com The Commissioner's Playbook (by Kevin Murray) https://amzn.to/4nT7AvC

Ep 12: The Dynasty Playbook - Part 2 of 4

The Dynasty Playbook (Part 2 of 4): Settings, Formats & Structural Decisions | The Home League Show Welcome back to The Home League Show, where we celebrate the foundation of fantasy football — the home league experience. Hosted by Kevin Murray and Joey Wright, this episode continues our four-part Dynasty Playbook series by diving into the most important part of building a successful dynasty league: Structure. In Part 1, Kevin and Joey explored why dynasty leagues change the fantasy experience and why so many leagues are adopting the format. Now in Part 2, the focus shifts to the settings and structural decisions that determine whether a dynasty league thrives for a decade… or collapses after two seasons. Because in dynasty leagues, structure drives sustainability. ⸻ Core League Settings That Define Your Dynasty League The first step in designing a dynasty league is making the foundational decisions that shape gameplay and strategy. Kevin and Joey break down key choices commissioners must consider: League Structure • League size (10, 12, or 14 teams) • Superflex vs traditional 1QB formats • PPR, half-PPR, tiered, or custom scoring • Points per first down options • Scoring bonuses Position Scoring Variations • Tight End Premium formats • Individual Defensive Players (IDP) • Points per carry considerations Lineup Construction • Number of wide receiver and FLEX spots • Superflex slot inclusion • Whether to include kickers or defenses • Balancing total starters vs roster depth Bench and Roster Design • Deep benches (20–30 roster spots are common) • Expanded offseason rosters • Taxi squads and rookie eligibility rules • Injured Reserve spots and qualification criteria Depth is one of the defining traits of dynasty leagues — shallow benches often make dynasty feel more like redraft. ⸻ Startup Draft Formats The startup draft is one of the most important and memorable events in any dynasty league. Kevin and Joey walk through several startup draft formats and how each affects league balance: Startup Draft Options • Snake drafts • Third-round reversal formats • Auction drafts Draft Logistics • Transparent draft order randomization • Slow drafts vs live draft events • Draft timer settings They also discuss whether trading startup picks should be allowed and how early trading activity can create excitement and engagement right from the beginning. ⸻ Rookie Draft Structure Once a dynasty league is established, rookie drafts replace traditional redraft formats. Kevin and Joey explain the most common rookie draft structures: Rookie Draft Formats • Linear drafts (the dynasty standard) • Snake drafts (less common) • Supplemental draft variations Draft Order Determination • Reverse standings • Max Potential Points (to discourage tanking) • Lottery systems • Weighted lotteries based on performance factors Additional rookie draft considerations include: • Draft pick trading rules • Limits on trading future picks • Timing of the rookie draft (post-NFL Draft vs preseason) These decisions shape the competitive balance of a dynasty league year after year. ⸻ Advanced Dynasty League Formats For leagues looking to increase immersion, Kevin and Joey discuss advanced dynasty formats. Empire Leagues • Rolling prize pools • Empire win conditions (such as back-to-back championships) • League reset after an empire victory • Long-term engagement incentives Contract & Salary Cap Leagues • Player contract years • Extensions and franchise tags • Salary cap penalties • Realistic roster management mechanics These formats add realism and strategy — but they also require experienced managers and strong league governance. ⸻ Balancing Complexity and Longevity One of the most important takeaways from this episode: Don't overcomplicate your league too early. Kevin and Joey discuss four key principles for building a sustainable dynasty league: • Avoid excessive complexity early on • Match format complexity to your league's experience level • Build systems designed to last • Plan structure with a five-year outlook The goal isn't novelty — it's longevity. ⸻ Looking Ahead: Dynasty Playbook Part 3 Next episode, Kevin and Joey shift from league structure to league strategy, including: • Startup draft strategies • Rookie draft philosophy ⸻ Dynasty League Design Shapes Your League's Identity Dynasty leagues are built intentionally. Your scoring, roster size, and draft structures don't just affect gameplay — they shape your league's culture. Design it carefully, and your format will support engagement for years to come. ⸻ Links and Resources Footballguys Website https://www.footballguys.com The Commissioner's Playbook (by Kevin Murray) https://amzn.to/4nT7AvC The Audible https://www.footballguys.com/podcasts/show/theaudible The FBG Fantasy Football Show https://www.footballguys.com/podcasts/show/fbgffshow The FBG Dynasty Show https://www.footballguys.com/podcasts/show/dynastyshow

   Ep. 11 - The Dynasty Playbook - Part 1 pf 4

The Dynasty Playbook (Part 1 of 4): Why You Should Consider a Dynasty Fantasy Football League | The Home League Show Welcome back to The Home League Show, where we celebrate the foundation of fantasy football — the home league experience. Hosted by Kevin Murray and Joey Wright, this episode kicks off a brand-new four-part series diving into one of the most exciting formats in fantasy football: Dynasty leagues. In Part 1 of The Dynasty Playbook, Kevin and Joey break down what dynasty fantasy football actually is, why it's so compelling, and how to start thinking about building a dynasty league the right way. ⸻ Redraft vs Dynasty: The Core Difference Redraft leagues reset every year. Dynasty leagues build long-term franchises. Kevin explains how dynasty completely changes the way fantasy managers think about roster construction and strategy: • You keep your entire roster from year to year • Rookie drafts replace full redraft resets • Trades carry long-term consequences • Draft picks become real assets • Strategy shifts from short-term thinking to multi-year planning ⸻ Why Dynasty Leagues Are So Much Fun Dynasty leagues unlock a whole new layer of engagement and strategy. Kevin and Joey discuss why dynasty formats keep managers invested all year: • Year-round activity and discussion • Increased trade volume and complex deals • Rookie scouting and NFL Draft anticipation • Rebuild vs contender dynamics • Long-term rivalries forming between managers • The excitement of watching your drafted rookie become a star ⸻ Great Dynasty Trades Become League Lore One of the most fun aspects of dynasty leagues is how trades become part of the league's story. Joey shares memorable examples from his own dynasty experience. ⸻ Should Dynasty Replace Your Redraft League? A key question many commissioners face: Should dynasty replace redraft, or exist alongside it? Kevin and Joey explore several options: • Converting an existing home league into a dynasty format • Starting a separate dynasty league with core members • Running both redraft and dynasty leagues simultaneously • Evaluating league stability before making the switch Dynasty leagues work best when the core group is stable and committed. ⸻ Key Decisions When Starting a Dynasty League Before launching a dynasty league, commissioners need to make several structural decisions. Kevin and Joey introduce the major areas every league must address (with deeper dives coming in Part 2): League Structure • League size (10–14 teams) • Superflex vs 1QB formats • Tight End Premium scoring • PPR, half-PPR, or custom scoring Roster Design • Roster size and bench depth • Taxi squads • Injured Reserve spots Startup Draft Structure • Snake draft vs auction • Third-round reversal formats • Whether startup picks can be traded ⸻ The Commitment Conversation Dynasty leagues require long-term commitment from managers. Commissioners should clearly communicate expectations around: • Multi-year buy-ins • Future draft pick trading rules • Financial transparency • Owner exit policies • Replacement owner plans Clarity up front prevents problems later. ⸻ Common Dynasty League Concerns Every dynasty commissioner eventually encounters challenges such as: • One team dominating early • Tanking concerns • Lopsided trades • Owner disengagement • Orphan teams • League fatigue The good news? Every one of these concerns has solutions — and it starts with strong league structure. ⸻ Looking Ahead: Dynasty Playbook Part 2 Next episode, Kevin and Joey go deeper into dynasty league construction, including: • League settings in detail • Rookie draft formats • Empire leagues • Contract and salary structures • Building long-term competitive balance ⸻ Listener Engagement Have a dynasty league already? Kevin and Joey want to hear from you. The best leagues learn from each other. ⸻ Dynasty Is a Long-Term Investment Dynasty isn't just a format change. It's a long-term investment in your league's story — and when done right, it becomes the foundation for year-round engagement. That's what makes dynasty leagues special. ⸻ Links and Resources Footballguys Website https://www.footballguys.com The Commissioner's Playbook (by Kevin Murray) https://amzn.to/4nT7AvC The Audible https://www.footballguys.com/podcasts/show/theaudible The FBG Fantasy Football Show https://www.footballguys.com/podcasts/show/fbgffshow The FBG Dynasty Show https://www.footballguys.com/podcasts/show/dynastyshow Timestamps: Intro - 0:00 Dynasty Fantasy Football In It For the Long Haul - 0:41 Why Dynasty is Fun! - 2:27 Trades Make Fantasy Fun - 7:18 Should a dynasty league replace a redraft league? - 13:30 A solid core of managers is critical - 17:26 Joeys wicked cool story hour - 19:05 Important dynasty league setup questions - 21:25 Rebuilding and tanking - 34:47 League engagement is king - 40:08 Orphan teams - 41:16 A look ahead - 42:14

Ep:9 Super Bowl Parties, Games & Fantasy Football Crossover

Super Bowl Parties, Games & Fantasy Football Crossover | The Home League Show Welcome back to The Home League Show, where we celebrate the foundation of fantasy football — the home league experience — and everything that turns leagues into lifelong traditions. Hosted by Kevin Murray and Joey Wright, this episode is all about one of the most underrated opportunities on the fantasy calendar: Super Bowl Sunday. Because while your fantasy championship may be over… the football season isn't truly finished until the Super Bowl is played. ⸻ The Super Bowl: The Real Final Chapter of the Fantasy Season The Super Bowl is the one night where: • Everyone is watching the same game • Even eliminated managers come back around • Champions, last-place teams, and middle-of-the-pack finishers are all equal again Kevin and Joey discuss why Super Bowl Sunday provides emotional closure, reflection, and one final chance to bring your league together — even if it's just for fun. And yes… there's a brief moment to congratulate Kevin's Seahawks. 😉 ⸻ Why the Super Bowl Party Actually Matters Fantasy seasons often end abruptly after the championship. The Super Bowl gives leagues: • A neutral celebration space • A bridge between seasons • A testing ground for future draft-day ideas • A chance to turn group chats into real-life traditions Joey shares details from his league's Golden Gnome Super Bowl Party, including: • A pregame awards ceremony • A throne-worthy seat for the champion • Last-place duties • A halftime pickup football game Draft Day and Super Bowl Sunday remain the two biggest in-person opportunities for home leagues — and most leagues only use one of them. ⸻ Super Bowl Games That Make the Party Better Kevin and Joey break down games that elevate the entire experience: Super Bowl Squares • Still the gold standard • Easy, inclusive, and familiar • Ways to spice it up with fantasy-based assignments and multiple boards Prop Bet–Style Games • Paper sheets or Google Forms • First TD, Gatorade color, anthem length, turnovers, and more • Tie outcomes to draft perks, punishments, or hosting duties Trivia & Fantasy Games • Perfect for breaks, commercials, or halftime • Super Bowl history mixed with fantasy knowledge • Keeps hardcore managers locked in Plus a rapid-fire list of additional activities: • Commercial bingo • Halftime performance judging • Guess-the-penalty games • Football charades • Touchdown dance contests • Mini football skill challenges ⸻ Decor, Food & Atmosphere Ideas Kevin dives into creating a true Super Bowl vibe: • Team-colored lighting • Banners, jerseys, and table setups • Scoreboards for bets and games Food and drinks get the spotlight too: • Team-themed food sides • City- or color-inspired snacks • Signature cocktails or mocktails • Drink rules tied to touchdowns and turnovers ⸻ The Draft Day ↔ Super Bowl Parallel Draft Day = hope, optimism, fresh starts Super Bowl Sunday = reflection, closure, legacy Both work because of: • Food • Rituals and traditions • Trash talk • Shared attention When leagues treat both as events, engagement skyrockets. ⸻ Bringing Your Fantasy League Into the Super Bowl Party Kevin and Joey encourage leagues to include at least ONE league-specific moment, such as: • Champion belt or ring presentation • Final standings recap • Season highlights • Assigned roles for champion, runner-up, and last place Add small stakes: • Trivia winners choose draft slots • Squares winners get draft advantages • Losers pick draft themes or locations Small stakes = massive attention. ⸻ Lean Into the Spectacle Super Bowl Sunday is the one day (besides Draft Day) to go all out: • League banners • Fantasy jerseys • Highlight reels • Walkout music • Pickup football games This is how leagues become traditions — not just yearly habits. ⸻ Listener Engagement & League Homework Kevin and Joey want to see what your league does. Send in: • Super Bowl party setups • Squares boards • Traditions • Wild rules or punishments Because the best leagues copy shamelessly. ⸻ Looking Ahead Next episode: Super Bowl Predictions & Offseason Conversations ⸻ Links and Resources 🎙️ The Home League Show (Podcast) https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/footballguys-home-league-show/id1857983475 🎧 The Audible (Footballguys) https://www.footballguys.com/podcasts/show/theaudible 🏈 Footballguys Fantasy Football Show https://www.footballguys.com/podcasts/show/fbgffshow 🌐 Footballguys.com https://www.footballguys.com

Welcome to Episode 3 of the Footballguys Home League Show—your weekly guide to building fun, competitive, and connected fantasy football home leagues. Hosted by Kevin Murray (author of The Commissioner's Playbook) and Joey Wright (Footballguys Community Ambassador), this episode dives into one of the most important—and often overlooked—parts of running a successful league: conflict resolution, transparency, and league integrity. Fantasy football is full of highs, lows, big trades, heated chats, and unavoidable disagreements. Great leagues aren't the ones that avoid conflict—they're the ones that manage conflict well. Today, Kevin and Joey break down how commissioners and league members can protect fairness, reduce drama, avoid collusion, and strengthen trust all season long. League of the Week: The BPFL This week we spotlight the BPFL, commissioned by Billy Michalski. What started as a softball team's offseason hobby has evolved into a creative, high-engagement fantasy empire filled with traditions, identity, and league-wide pride. Highlights from BPFL: • 14-team, two-division format • Empire pot keeping long-term stakes high • Legendary draft days with full production value • Draft-order determination contests • Custom website using League Legacy • An emphasis on culture, transparency, collaboration, and connection The BPFL is a shining example of what great commissioners build: leagues with personality, pride, and long-lasting tradition. Learn more about League Legacy Websites: LeagueLegacyWebsites.com To submit your league for consideration: FBGCommish@Footballguys.com Commish Corner: Engagement in the Season of Apathy Right now is the stretch of the season where excitement peaks for some managers… and fades for others. Kevin and Joey share quick ways to re-ignite your league: • Drop memes, GIFs, and hype videos • Stir up storylines and rivalries • Create a "state of the league" update • Spotlight manager achievements • Spark discussion in the group chat Small touches often make the biggest cultural impact. Home League Huddle (Main Topic): Conflict Resolution & League Integrity Conflict is inevitable in fantasy football—trades, collusion suspicions, tanking concerns, commissioner decisions, and playoff implications all create friction. But great leagues use that friction to build stronger culture. In this episode, Kevin and Joey break down: • Why conflict management matters • How trust affects every league decision • Common sources of conflict • Preventing disputes before they start • Fair and transparent trade-review systems • Collusion-proofing your league • When (and when not) to intervene as commissioner • The "best interest of the league" clause • Healthy communication habits that sustain culture Kevin also shares an unforgettable real-life story—The Great Publix Trade Approval of 2013—and explains how a single misstep led him to create a formal league constitution. This episode shows why conflict doesn't have to break a league. When handled correctly, it builds connection, trust, and long-term stability. Last Place Lounge This week we review and rate four last-place punishments: • Street-corner costume sign • Paying next year's champion's dues • Recording a video apology • Losing a future draft pick Send in your league's punishments for a chance to be featured! EP2: How to Keep Your Fantasy Football League Engaged All Year!

Welcome to Episode 2 of the Footballguys Home League Show—your weekly guide to building fun, competitive, and connected fantasy football home leagues. In this episode, hosts Kevin Murray and Joey Wright dive into one of the biggest challenges commissioners and league members face each year: midseason apathy. When the excitement of draft day fades and the standings start to settle, engagement naturally dips. But great leagues—and great commissioners—find ways to keep everyone invested. In this episode, you'll learn actionable league engagement strategies you can apply right now to bring energy back to your league, strengthen culture, and help every manager feel connected to the season. League of the Week: Greenskeeper Fantasy Football League (Papa Staskiel) We spotlight the Greenskeeper Fantasy Football League, led by FFU Commissioner of the Year Papa Staskiel—a league that has mastered creativity and connection. From destination drafts and driving-range Tin Cup themes to live waiver-wire auction streams, rule-roulette systems, and a 400-rule submission tradition, this league has built a legacy grounded in chaos, fun, and unforgettable memories. A perfect example of what home leagues can become when creativity and community take the lead. Home League Huddle: Engagement Strategies That Work Kevin and Joey break down the core elements that keep a league thriving during the season of apathy, including: • The commissioner as leader • Creating bonding events and shared experiences • Bringing entertainment into league culture • Maintaining strong communication • Enhancing league stories, rivalries, and narrative hooks • Adding awards, achievements, and things to compete for beyond wins and losses Through newsletters, podcasts, league websites, social channels, and group chats, your league can build a communication ecosystem that fosters connection week after week. Communication Channels That Elevate Your League • League chat strategies (engagement prompts, polls, reactions, threads) • Social media channels for league branding and hype • Newsletters to recap big moments, rivalries, and weekly awards • Podcasts to highlight league culture and manager personalities • League websites to archive history, trophies, stats, and traditions When communication flows, engagement follows. Last Place Lounge This week, Kevin and Joey discuss listener-submitted last-place punishments and ask: "What are your favorite last-place punishments you've ever seen?" A full deep-dive episode on punishments is coming soon—but here we get a fun preview. Commish Hotline + Mailbag Have a question, story, idea, or league dilemma? Send it in! Kevin and Joey invite commissioners and league members to submit questions, voice messages, and stories for future episodes. Your league could be featured next.
