   Trauma Bond

In this episode of The Former Reality Podcast, your Secret Set Sister sits down with Melody, a former director behind some of reality TV’s most iconic, drama-filled series like The Real World, Bad Girls Club, and more, who has since pivoted into a deeply impactful new role as a licensed therapist. Melody spent years in the field capturing raw emotion, navigating high-stakes environments, and guiding real people through heightened moments on camera. Her ability to connect, read a room, and build trust in even the most unpredictable situations wasn’t just a production skill—it was a calling. And eventually, that instinct led her off set and into the therapy room. In this conversation, we go beyond the “career pivot” headline and explore the why behind it. What draws so many of us to production life in the first place? The chaos, the connection, the storytelling, the intensity—and what happens when those same traits start asking for a different kind of outlet? Melody shares how her experience directing unscripted television translated into supporting clients through real emotional arcs, how storytelling shows up in mental health work, and why self-awareness is one of the most powerful tools you can develop both on set or off. We also dig into bigger themes like childhood trauma, emotional neglect, and how understanding your own story can shape both your personal and professional evolution. This episode is for anyone who has ever thrived in the energy of production, but wondered what it might look like to channel those skills into something more sustainable, intentional, and healing. Interested in working with Melody or learning more about her therapy practice? Check out her website and services here: https://www.melodylmft.com (https://www.melodylmft.com/) and send her an email. Audio Remix

In this episode of The Former Reality Podcast, your Secret Set Sister sits down with Sergio, a former Audio Supervisor who’s captured everything from sizzling competition cooking shows to high-drama Housewives moments and powerful documentary storytelling. If you’ve ever wondered what happens when you take “rolling sound” off set and into a whole new world—this is your episode. Sergio shares how he transitioned from the unpredictable pace of unscripted TV into a more stable (but still creative) role as an AV Manager at the New York Public Library. Along the way, he’s also stepped into entrepreneurship with Legacy Archives—an upcoming platform designed to preserve the soundtrack of your life and tell stories in a whole new way. We get into the real behind-the-scenes of a career pivot: how on-set problem solving translates to leadership, why people skills are your most underrated asset, and how the same instincts that help you navigate a 12-hour shoot day can guide you through building something entirely new. Sergio breaks down the practical skills you already have and how to reframe them for new industries, while also speaking honestly about the human side of change—identity, creativity, and finding purpose beyond the call sheet. Whether you're actively looking to pivot or just starting to wonder what else is out there, this conversation is a reminder: your skills don’t disappear when you leave set—they evolve. We're Live In 3...2...I Do

What happens when a seasoned TV producer trades the chaos of live television for the high-stakes world of weddings? In this episode of The Former Reality Podcast, Your Secret Set Sister sits down with Veronica, a former talk show Senior Producer who turned her production expertise into a thriving wedding coordination business as the founder of TCB Wedding Management (“Taking Care of Business”). Fixing it for Post

Episode Description: In this episode of The Former Reality Podcast, we sit down with Nate — a former Story Producer who traded post-production timelines for financial planning spreadsheets. After years crafting narratives for HGTV and Food Network, Nate discovered his storytelling and communication skills could help people shape a different kind of story: the future of their money. Nate walks us through his pivot from unscripted television to becoming a licensed financial advisor — from studying for certifications to building a client list from scratch, to adjusting from predictable weekly rates to a commission-based model. We talk about the structure of his new day-to-day, the realities of starting over in a regulated industry, and the personal and professional lessons he’s learned along the way. He shares what motivated him to finally leave production, how his media skillset still shows up in his new career, and the advice he wishes all creatives knew about their finances — long before they ever think about a pivot. Whether you’re curious about financial advising, exploring a career transition, or just want to understand how your production skills can transfer outside the industry, this conversation offers clarity, encouragement, and a new way to see your own narrative. Tune in to hear how Nate built his “New Reality,” one informed decision at a time. Research & Rockets

In this episode of The Former Reality Podcast, Your Secret Set Sister sits down with Brandon, a former unscripted TV researcher and field producer who once chased mysteries, treasure hunts, and even UFOs—on camera, at least. Now? He’s swapped field notes for flight plans, trading paranormal shoots for aerospace, aeronautics, and defense contracting. Brandon breaks down how he moved from non-union reality TV grind to the highly regulated world of cost proposal analysis, where deadlines still loom but the call sheets don’t come at 2 a.m. anymore. They talk burnout, pandemic pivots, the collapse of the “industry,” and why leaving TV doesn’t mean you leave your skills behind—sometimes you just repackage your pilot. Expect production puns, career-change real talk, and a behind-the-scenes look at how a showrunner brain translates surprisingly well into government contracts, pricing models, project management, and engineering workflows. ✨ Get a quick template for your own resume to translate crew speak to corporate jargon: https://formerreality.gumroad.com/l/resumetemplate?wanted=true ✨ Want more resources for navigating life after unscripted TV? Set Teacher

In this episode of The Former Reality Podcast, host Your Secret Set Sister sits down with James — a longtime Real Housewives producer who traded cast drama for classroom curiosity. After years orchestrating iconic Bravo moments and wrangling chaotic shoot days, he made the bold pivot into teaching eighth-grade science… where the plot twists are still plentiful, just a lot stickier (hello, slime projects). James shares what led him to step away from the unscripted rollercoaster, how the industry downturn pushed him to rethink stability, and why working with kids has become one of the brightest chapters of his life. We talk about the joy of watching students “lightbulb” their way through lessons, the humor of middle school antics, and the hope he’s found in shaping futures instead of storylines. If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like to rewrite your career narrative, or about 'going back to school,' James explains how producing reality TV prepares you surprisingly well for managing a classroom. Set Dressing to Estate Blessings

In the world of media production, we wear many hats—but today’s guest, Ashley, may have been the one who styled them. With a background as a costume and set designer, Ashley brought visual cohesion and artistic flair to film, late-night television, and commercial sets. Her creative work was as dynamic as her spirit—adventurous, collaborative, and always open to new opportunities. Now, she’s thriving in what she calls her New Reality—as a mother, a wife (to a former reality TV contestant!), and a multi-hyphenate entrepreneur. From running estate sales to managing brand marketing initiatives, Ashley has transitioned her storytelling and design skills into ventures that align with her values and lifestyle. If you’re a creative professional questioning your next chapter, Ashley’s story is a reminder that reinvention is possible—and sometimes, even more fulfilling.
