[…] This is something that we've been thinking about and talking about for some time now. By we, I mean my group, the Alliance for Journalist Freedom. As I mentioned earlier, there is no protection for press freedom or freedom of speech anywhere in our constitution. And as we also discussed, we don't think a constitutional amendment to fix that is a realistic prospect. But there is an alternative, and that is an act which works in ways very similar to the Human Rights Acts that work in Queensland, the ACT in Victoria. And those acts do three very simple things. They say, first of all, that Parliament must always consider media freedom when passing, must always consider human rights when passing new legislation. […]
