Ep.7: He Couldn't Read. Then He Wrote Three Books

This episode is sponsored by the Black Business School. Get 35% off their Prime Course and take control of your financial future. https://b1stockoptions.com/watsons What happens when the people who are supposed to love you hurt you the most? And how do you keep believing in a purpose when life gives you every reason to question God? In this powerful episode of From Behind This Chair, Anthony D. Hamilton opens up about growing up surrounded by violence, enduring years of abuse, and struggling to understand why God seemed absent during some of the hardest moments of his life. Despite the pain, he never stopped fighting, finding his voice, and eventually discovering a purpose bigger than his past. The conversation takes an honest look at faith, childhood trauma, grief, and the loss of loved ones. As the discussion unfolds, Anthony reflects on losing family members, questioning God's timing, and learning to see hardship through a different perspective. Together, they explore how experiences that once made us feel forgotten can become the very things that help us inspire, encourage, and change the lives of others. One of the most moving moments comes when Anthony shares how a teacher once humiliated him and made him feel like he would never succeed. Years later, he returned as a published author with a message that says everything about his journey: "Don't laugh at me. Teach me how to read." His story is a reminder that your beginnings do not have to define your ending. You may not understand everything you're going through today, but your story is not over. Sometimes, the greatest victory is simply refusing to quit. What do you believe? Is everything in life part of a greater purpose, even the pain we cannot explain? Share your thoughts in the comments. In this powerful episode of From Behind This Chair, Carlos sits down with Silky Slim for an unfiltered conversation about childhood trauma, survival, incarceration, gang life, addiction, faith, and transformation. Silky Slim opens up about growing up in an abusive home, becoming involved in crime at just 12 years old, and spending decades living a life surrounded by violence. He shares how learning to read while incarcerated changed his perspective, why he refused to let prison "incarcerate his mind," and how studying history helped him see the systems around him differently. The conversation also takes a deeply personal turn as Silky Slim reflects on addiction, losing loved ones, surviving multiple suicide attempts, finding faith, and ultimately turning his pain into a mission to help others. This episode is sponsored by the Black Business School. Get 35% off their Prime Course and take control of your financial future. https://b1stockoptions.com/watsons What happens when people with very different political perspectives sit down and actually talk? In this episode of From Behind This Chair, the conversation gets real about Trump, immigration, political polarization, race, history, and what it means to look beyond the labels of "left" and "right." The discussion explores why people vote the way they do, the complexities of immigration, the role of historical facts in political conversations, and how political narratives can divide people who may actually have more in common than they realize. Most importantly, this conversation challenges us to see people as people—not just as Democrats, Republicans, immigrants, or members of a particular group—and to make decisions based on understanding, history, and humanity. 👉 Do you think America is too divided by left vs. right? Ep.3: AI, Data Centers & Who Really Owns Black Data

This episode is sponsored by the Black Business School. Get 35% off their Prime Course and take control of your financial future. https://b1stockoptions.com/watsons Will AI create more Black millionaires—or more Black unemployment? In this episode of From Behind This Chair, Doc and his guests have a candid conversation about AI, jobs, technology, and what the AI revolution could mean for the Black community. They discuss whether AI will actually eliminate jobs or simply raise expectations for workers, why trades like plumbing and electrical work could become more valuable, and how AI can help small business owners with everything from marketing and accounting to navigating frustrating financial systems. The conversation also tackles a bigger question: Who benefits from AI—and who gets left behind? They explore AI's impact on Black culture, whether technology can replicate culture and creativity, the importance of making AI accessible to underserved communities, and why schools and local leaders should be demanding more from the companies building these technologies. Most importantly, they argue that AI shouldn't just be something our communities fear. It could be a tool for getting ahead. 👉 Do you think AI will create more opportunities or take more jobs? 21 years for one angry punch

This episode is sponsored by the Black Business School. Get 35% off their Prime Course and take control of your financial future. https://b1stockoptions.com/ (https://b1stockoptions.com/) "I'm not homeless. I'm at home." What happens when you stop seeing someone as a label—and start seeing them as a human being? In this powerful episode of From Behind This Chair, Doc Hamilton sits down with several men he has known for years who have experienced homelessness, incarceration, addiction, loss, and life on the streets. This isn't a conversation about statistics or stereotypes. It's about the people behind them. Doc opens up about his own experience of being homeless, remembering one of the lowest nights of his life—lying on a cold hotel floor while a rat walked across his back. He talks about what it felt like to be hungry, exhausted, and treated as though he had no value, and why he believes he ultimately survived because he stood back up. Joe shares what it means to live on the streets without allowing homelessness to define his identity. He talks about growing up in East Palo Alto, losing his mother, and the values she instilled in him about helping others, regardless of their circumstances. Michael Love tells the story of receiving a 21-year sentence, spending 11 years in prison, and the promise his mother made him make: learn to listen and don't come back. He explains how prison forced him to grow up and how his mother's words eventually changed the direction of his life. The conversation also confronts the myths surrounding homelessness. What happens when someone can't read? What happens when society assumes someone is lazy, dangerous, or incapable simply because they're living on the street? And then the conversation becomes deeply personal. The men look directly into the camera and speak to their mothers—women who raised them, supported them, taught them, and in some cases remained their strongest source of love long after they were gone. There are stories of loss, incarceration, addiction, violence, survival, forgiveness, faith, and redemption. But above all, this is a conversation about human dignity. Because a person can lose their home without losing their humanity. And sometimes, the people we think need to be lifted up are the very people who end up lifting us. Watch until the end—and tell us: What is one thing you wish people understood about homelessness that they often get wrong? Fam, real talk, thank you for rocking with me. This episode is sponsored by the Black Business School. Get 35% off their Prime Course and take control of your financial future. https://b1stockoptions.com/ (https://b1stockoptions.com/) --- **What does money mean to you—and what have you sacrificed to get it?** In this episode of **From Behind This Chair**, Doc sits down with Sam and Tim for a brutally honest conversation about money, success, family, and the ways our relationship with wealth can shape our lives. They talk about growing up without much money, seeing wealth up close, and learning early that money can provide freedom—but it can also bring out the worst in people. Sam opens up about buying a Mercedes he didn't really need and how that decision set him back for years. Tim talks about the pressure he felt to become financially stable not just for himself, but for his entire family—and how putting everyone else's needs before his own came at a cost. Doc gets even more personal, sharing how having money changed the way people treated him, how he started paying for friends and using money to bring people into his life, and the painful realization that some people weren't there for him—they were there for what he could provide. The conversation dives into something many people struggle to admit: **sometimes we teach people how to treat us.** They discuss free haircuts, always picking up the bill, feeling responsible for everyone else's needs, and the importance of learning to "fill your own cup" before constantly pouring into everyone else. They also explore how parents unintentionally teach children their relationship with money, why social media makes wealth look like success, and why the people with real wealth often aren't the ones trying hardest to look rich. Most importantly, they challenge the idea that **money equals success.** Money is a tool. What you do with it—and what you allow it to do to you—can determine whether it creates freedom or becomes another form of bondage. This is an honest conversation about money, self-worth, family, generosity, financial boundaries, and learning how to build something that lasts. **What did money teach you that you wish you had learned earlier?** Tell us in the comments. The Shocking Truth About Aging & Losing Loved Ones

Man, let me tell you something. Life hits different when you hit 64. I'm not just talkin' about the body startin' to feel the years, but the mind too. The weight of grief hits deep, ya feel me? Losing my mother, father, uncle, and brother, each in their own way, changed me. My brother, he passed away alone, wasn't found for four days. That mess stays with you. Now, every time I get behind that wheel, anxiety kicks in. I worry, man. I'm starting to wonder if it's the same cognitive decline my parents went through, if I'm headed down that road too. Money's tighter than tight, and with everything else I've gotta carry, the emotional load just keeps buildin'. I'm always holdin' others up, and sometimes I feel like I'm sinking myself. But then I get down to Texas to film the podcast, and that moment... it lit me up. My sister and daughter, they came through, showing love and pride. That felt like something I needed. And let me tell you, that homelessness episode? My favorite by far. There's this one guest, formerly incarcerated, struggling, feeling lost. We had this real talk and for the first time, he felt seen, like he could reconnect with his daughter. That hit hard in a good way. I can't lie, sometimes I feel lost. I avoid calls, I get overwhelmed. But don't mistake that for weakness. I ain't gonna quit. I'm still pushin', still tryin' to be a better podcaster, to get better, to find that hope. You ain't gonna see me give up. I've got to keep fighting. _____________ Fam, real talk, thank you for rocking with me. This chair is only growing because y'all keep showing up. My Son Wanted to Quit Music… I Stopped Him

In this episode of From Behind This Chair, I'm sitting down with my middle son, Emmanuel, and we get into the kind of father and son conversation that a lot of families never really have out loud. We talk about fear, pride, discipline, parenting, and what happens when somebody gifted starts losing the love for what they do. Emmanuel opens up about music, songwriting, and why the industry, the pressure, and all the eyes on you can make you want to back away from your own calling. But me, I'm not letting him quit on himself like that. This is a real talk about family, strict parenting, academic growth, and the tension that can live between love and discipline. We go back to the harder seasons too, the clashes, the lessons, the reading, the honor roll, and the push that helped shape him. Then we get into the deeper part, the pain behind the lyrics he wrote, and how that pain turned into the theme song for From Behind This Chair. As a father, that meant something to me. For real. One of the greatest gifts I have ever received. If you have ever wrestled with your purpose, your parents, or your own voice, this one is for you. We Came From Poverty, Football Was Our Way Out

In this reunion episode of From Behind This Chair, I'm sitting down with two people who go way back with me, Victor Jackson, now Pastor Victor Jackson, and Tino Wilson. This is real friendship, real brotherhood, and the kind of bond that comes from high school football, college football, and growing through life together. We take it back nearly 50 years, talking about the work, the discipline, and the way football shaped us. We get into stories about my work ethic, my hands, my route running, and the practices that made all of us better. Victor talks about what it meant to compete, to be pushed, and how those moments helped him earn his spot. We also talk about the bigger picture, moving from Ohio to Texas, chasing football scholarships, and being Black students on a mostly Anglo West Texas college campus. We speak on the racism, the pressure, the hard times, and how loyalty kept us together even when life had us in different places. And because this is still From Behind This Chair, we do not just stay serious. We laugh too, about retirement after 40 years in law enforcement, thrift store hunting, drawing designs in haircuts, and the little things that tell the bigger story. This one is about Black friendship, football brotherhood, Texas football culture, loyalty, and the people who knew you before the world did. Watch, like, and subscribe, and come sit with us. _____________ Fam, real talk, thank you for rocking with me. This chair is only growing because y'all keep showing up. Everybody Has That One Childhood Whooping Story

In this homecoming episode of From Behind This Chair, I'm sitting down with my sisters, Alice and Doretha, and we're taking it all the way back. We get into the kind of childhood memories that stay with you, having to choose food over fixing a cold house, getting pushed into hard moments way too young, and learning lessons the rough way. We talk about everything from a childhood fight our mother had a hand in, to me getting scarred up by barbed wire, to working jobs that left real marks, including the time my finger got cut on a pie-wrapping machine. We also laugh about the stuff only family can laugh about, counting change, playing school with our cousins, the candy house, the pig story, the five sisters, all of it. And somewhere in between the funny stories and the painful ones, we talk about what it means to still be here, still be connected, and still make time for each other. By the end of it, we made a promise to come back together every year, because this kind of bonding matters. _____________ Fam, real talk, thank you for rocking with me. "If I Could Do Life Over Again…I'd Be a Better Dad", Doc Gets Real About His Regrets

In this episode of From Behind This Chair, I'm chopping it up with James Kamara and Sebastian Poitier about one real question: If you could run life back, what would you do different? James keeps it honest. He talks about wishing he had listened to his mom, taken school serious, and not let embarrassment in ESL classes shake his confidence. Being sent to continuation school changed his path, especially with sports. He also opens up about being raised on fear and whoopings, and how he'd choose encouragement over that with his own kids. Sebastian says he would've locked in on education the same way he locked in on sports. More listening, less ego. And me? I had to own mine too. I was strict. Too strict sometimes. Led with fear instead of listening. I share how Coach Wallace gave me discipline that changed my life, but I've learned growth means admitting where you could've done better. This one's about accountability, reflection, and doing better moving forward. Pull up a chair. _____________ Fam, real talk, thank you for rocking with me. Silky Slim: Former Gang Leader's Shocking Escape from a Life of Crime

In this episode of From Behind This Chair, I'm sitting down with my guy, Silky Slim. This one hits deep. Silky shares his journey from a childhood full of pain and abuse to a life of survival, addiction, and violence. He talks about a moment when he decided not to run from conflict, and how that shaped him into the man he is today. We get real about what it's like to be stuck in the system, how he learned to read while locked up, and how he refused to let prison "incarcerate" his mind. Silky also opens up about the corruption in the justice system and the divine moments that kept him from giving up. From his time on the streets to his spiritual awakening, we cover it all. Silky's work with Stop the Killing Inc. and his mission to break the cycle of violence in our communities is at the heart of this conversation. Tune in for raw, honest talk on trauma, faith, and the journey to redemption. This is one you don't want to miss. _____________ Fam, real talk, thank you for rocking with me. I WAS HOMELESS: Living Through Loss, Addiction, and Survival on the Streets

What does homelessness really look like when you stop talking about people and start listening to them? In this episode of From Behind This Chair, the conversation moves past statistics and stereotypes and into lived experience. Men who have survived years on the street speak openly with host Anthony "Doc" Hamilton about dignity, brotherhood, faith, addiction, loss, and the moments that kept them going when everything else was stripped away. Through shared stories, tears, laughter, and quiet truths, this episode asks harder questions: Who do we see? Who do we ignore? And what does it mean to belong when the world has already decided who you are? This isn't 'shop talk' – it's a communion. ________ Fam, real talk, thank you for rocking with me. "Where Was God?" Finding Faith Through Pain and Trauma

In this deeply personal episode of From Behind This Chair, Anthony "Doc" Hamilton opens the door to questions many people are afraid to ask out loud: Where was God when I was being beaten? When I felt unloved? When I was sure I wouldn't make it? Joined by men who believe, Doc and his guests reflect on trauma, doubt, resilience, loss, and the slow, unfinished journey toward belief. This is not a sermon. It's a confession. A conversation about faith that survives anger, grief, and unanswered questions – and the kind of belief that's forged not in certainty, but in endurance. ________ Fam, real talk, thank you for rocking with me.
