S3 E13 Algorithm, Self-Worth, and Muslim Daughters

The average Muslim teenager is spending eight to ten hours a day on screens. In that time, an algorithm that knows her better than she knows herself is deciding what she believes about her body, her worth, and what beautiful looks like. This episode is for her — and for every parent watching it happen.

We talk about what social media algorithms are actually doing — how they learn a teenager's vulnerabilities within days and feed her content designed to keep her anxious, comparing, and coming back for more. We talk about what the research shows: 87% of teen girls report social media negatively impacts their mental health. And we talk about the specific challenge for Muslim girls navigating between what the algorithm says is beautiful and what their faith says about their worth.

Then we talk about what Islam actually gives her that the algorithm cannot — a fixed point of worth that does not depend on followers, filters, or performance. And we give both parents and teenagers specific, practical things to do tonight.

This is not an episode about banning phones. It is about understanding what is happening so we can respond in a way that is honest, loving, and actually useful.

Resources for Muslim families navigating screen time, teen mental health support, and Islamic youth counselling are here.

Common Sense Media: commonsensemedia.org — age-appropriate media guides and screen time research

Jonathan Haidt's The Anxious Generation — book and free resources at anxiousgeneration.com

Bark parental monitoring app: bark.us — monitors for concerning content without full surveillance

Islamic Social Services Association (ISSA): issacanada.org — Muslim family counselling

Naseeha Muslim Youth Helpline: 1-866-627-3342 — for teenagers who need someone to talk to

Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868 — available 24/7 for young people in distress.

S3 E12 You have made the decision

You have made the decision. You are not going back. And right now you do not know what to do next — tonight, tomorrow, this week. This episode is a map for the next 24 hours and beyond.

We cover what to do before anyone knows — documentation, access to money, having a safety plan. We cover your Islamic rights in divorce — your mahr, your maintenance during iddah, your right to custody of your children. We cover the Islamic divorce process in Canada — how to get both a civil divorce and an Islamic one, what khul and faskh look like in practice, and why you should not sign anything before speaking to both a lawyer and an Islamic scholar.

We talk about who to tell and when, how to protect your children through the process, and how to take care of yourself when you are trying to hold everything together at once. And we close with what women who have walked through this and come out the other side actually build.

The ending of a marriage is not the ending of a life. This episode is a map for what comes next.

Islamic divorce resources, legal aid information, Muslim women's shelters, and counselling support for Ontario are included at the end of the episode.

S3 E 11 Islamic options for divorce and empowerment

Right now, in Ontario alone, thousands of Muslim women are asking the same question with different details. My husband cheated. My husband is abusive. My husband has another wife he hid from me. He has cut me off from my family. The details are different. The question underneath is always the same: is what I am going through enough of a reason to leave?

This episode answers that question. Not to push any woman toward a particular decision — but because no woman should stay in a marriage she has the Islamic right to leave simply because nobody told her she had that right.

We cover the full Islamic framework: when to try first and what genuine effort looks like, when a situation needs a qualified scholar rather than a podcast, and when Islam clearly and unambiguously supports leaving. We name the three Islamic options every Muslim woman needs to know — talaq, khul, and faskh — and explain exactly what each one means and how she can access them, including in Canada.

Islam gave you options. Islam gave you rights. This episode makes sure you know what they are.

Islamic divorce resources, Muslim family counselling, and legal aid information for Ontario are included at the end of the episode.
