How Flat Out Feasts Built a Freeze-Drying Business Against All Odds
What happens when a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis strikes you mid-hike on the Pacific Crest Trail? For Lisa Belanger, it became the spark that launched Flat Out Feast, a groundbreaking Edmonton-based company creating freeze-dried, low-carb backcountry meals for adventurers who refuse to compromise their health on the trail. In this episode, Lisa shares the incredible journey of building Flat Out Feast from the ground up, including becoming the first person in Alberta to navigate the complex food handling permits required for freeze-dried meat meals, doing it all as a one-person operation with no co-packing facilities available in Canada. From winning the 2024 Made in Alberta Award for Best Prepared Meal to finally completing the Pacific Crest Trail in 2022 using her own creations, Lisa's story is equal parts entrepreneurial grit and backcountry passion, a must-listen for anyone who loves the outdoors and wants to know what it really takes to bring an innovative food product to market.Learn more and support Lisa's business by purchasing her freeze-dried meals here: https://flatoutfeasts.ca/Helpful links:Join The Freeze-Dried Network: https://www.skool.com/freeze-dried-networkStay connected:Follow on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn @ freezedriedbusinesshttps://freezedriedbusiness.comPurchase your ticket for the largest, most informative freeze-drying event. Okre - Barcelona's First Freeze-Dried Food Brand
In this episode of the Frozen Assets podcast, I sat down with Jorge, the co-founder of Okre, a freeze-dried food company based in Barcelona, Spain. Jorge found his way into this industry the same way a lot of people do, by searching YouTube for answers and eventually landing on the Freeze Dried Business channel. His background is in outdoor sports and bike packing, and that's actually what sparked the whole idea. After paying a lot for a disappointing freeze-dried meal on a multi-day trip, he came home curious and started digging. One freeze dryer turned into four, and what started as testing in a home kitchen has grown into a real facility with a full product line built around Spanish recipes and outdoor nutrition. He runs the business with his best friend, a trained chef who handles the kitchen and recipe development, while Jorge focuses on marketing and getting the product out into the world. It's a natural split that came together organically, and it's a good example of why finding the right partner early matters more than most people realize.Helpful links:Join The Freeze-Dried Network: https://www.skool.com/freeze-dried-networkStay connected:Follow on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn @ freezedriedbusinesshttps://freezedriedbusiness.comPurchase your ticket for the largest, most informative freeze-drying event. In this episode of the Frozen Assets Podcast, I sit down with Linc Burgess and Lloyd Parks from Cuddon Freeze Dry, a New Zealand-based freeze dryer manufacturer with decades of engineering experience behind them, to talk about what serious freeze-drying entrepreneurs need to hear.We get into their latest commercial freeze dryer, the FD50GP, a unit designed specifically to bridge the gap between hobbyist home machines and full industrial-scale equipment.
