Building Kinesiology Degrees Backward: A 10-Step Approach to Program Design

In this episode, we discuss how kinesiology programs can be designed more intentionally by working backward from job data, professional expectations, and workforce needs. Rather than beginning with existing courses or traditional degree structures, this 10-step approach starts with the careers students are preparing to enter and then identifies the knowledge, skills, credentials, experiences, and assessments needed to support those outcomes.

The conversation offers a practical framework for faculty, program directors, and academic leaders who want to strengthen kinesiology curricula, improve career alignment, and help students better understand how their degree connects to employment opportunities in fields such as coaching, exercise science, health promotion, sport management, fitness, recreation, and allied health preparation.

Beyond the Bench: Exploring the Perceived Experiences of Minority Assistant Coaches in the NBA

In this episode, we dive into the recent qualitative study by Timothy Baghurst, Simon Quick, and Adrian Griffin, which explores the professional journeys of 11 minority assistant coaches in the National Basketball Association. Moving beyond standard league statistics, this discussion centers on the "counter-stories" and lived experiences of these coaches as they navigate the high-pressure environment of professional basketball. We explore four primary narratives identified in the research:

The "Moving Goalpost": We discuss the perception that career advancement often relies more on social capital than objective merit, with one participant noting, "The country club is still the country club, and we ain’t invited necessarily". We also touch on how the rise of analytics may be perceived by some as a new form of "coded expertise" that can act as a gatekeeper.

Emotional Suppression and Hyper-vigilance: The coaches describe the perceived need to carefully regulate their emotions to avoid racialized stereotypes. As one coach shared, "you got to be careful expressing your frustrations, or you will be deemed to be an angry Black man automatically".

The "Watchdog" Narrative: We examine the feeling of being "pigeonholed" into relational or player-management roles rather than tactical leadership positions, described by one participant as being "the watchman, or watchdog for Black players".

The Burden of Representation: Finally, we discuss the "healthy pressure" these coaches feel to succeed not just for themselves, but as trailblazers for others, with one coach explaining, "I’m the first [from my country] ever to coach on the bench in the NBA... I think it's just going to open up more doors, hopefully for others".

This episode aims to provide a nuanced look at the perceived barriers and systemic complexities within the league, concluding with the authors' recommendations for more transparent hiring criteria and intentional mentorship programs to foster equitable leadership pathways.
