Future Voices EP6: Dr. Janelle Joseph & How Racialized Women Are Portrayed In Sports Media
<p>We’re talking about sports! In this episode, we revive an interview Rachel had with Dr. Janelle Joseph. Dr. Joseph is a Professor in Critical Studies of Race & Indigeneity as well as the Founder and Director of IDEAS (Indigeneity, Diaspora, Equity and Anti-Racism in Sport) Research Lab at The University of Toronto.</p> <p>Rachel and Dr. Joseph discuss how Capoeira began her journey to activism, what is Misogynoir and how the media is portraying racialized athletes. We also discuss the ways in which women athletes are speaking up and celebrating who they are. </p> <p>Dr. Joseph’s most recent book is titled Sport in the Black Atlantic: Cricket, Canada and the Caribbean Diaspora. Future Voices EP5: Ghazal Foroutan Discusses Graphic Design, Finding Inspiration & Design Activism
<p>In this episode, Aida and Rachel speak with Ghazal Foroutan, an Iranian graphic designer and educator currently based in Oklahoma. Ghazal discusses how to find inspiration as a designer, design activism and her recent exhibition on the Compulsory Hijab Law oppressing women in Iran since the 1970s. Ghazal also talks about the differences of studying and working as a graphic designer in Iran versus in the United States.</p> <p>Ghazal Foroutan studied graphic design and has a BFA from Alzahra University in Iran and a MFA from Oklahoma State University. She has won the 13th Khawrizmi Youth Awards for her illustrations with Watch pieces in 2012.
