[…] As the breath very first touches the lines in the nostrils, there are very fine nerve receptors there, as well as higher up into the conca, in the sinuses, that they're very, very sensitive, and they're picking up information about the relative warmth and humidity of the breath. They're also conveying this information to the brain, to what's called the olfactory bulb. And the amazing thing about the olfactory bulb, this nerve receptor, is connected directly from our nostrils, is that as we breathe it in slowly and calmly, that then sends information to the olfactory bulb that directs that information directly to the amygdala fear center, which tells the amygdala it's safe, it's calmed down.
