Geektown Talks To... Fil Eisler: ‘Outer Banks’, ‘Fire Country’, ‘Sheriff Country’, ‘Momo’, Sam Ryder & Robbie Williams

On this episode of Geektown Talks To…, Dave Elliott sits down in person with composer Fil Eisler for an eighth interview, five years after their last conversation. Fil has created the music for a huge range of film and television projects, including Revenge, Empire, UnREAL, Thunder Force and The Desperate Hour. His latest work includes Netflix’s Outer Banks, CBS dramas Fire Country and Sheriff Country, and the fantasy film Momo. During the interview, Fil discusses bringing Outer Banks to an end after five seasons, how its music grew alongside the Pogues, and the unusual instrument behind one of the show’s most recognisable themes. He also talks about expanding the world of Fire Country through Sheriff Country, giving the spin-off its own more acoustic identity and encouraging UK viewers to “spot the dulcimer”. The conversation also explores Fil’s deeply personal connection to Momo and the creation of its end-title song, “Time Is All We Have”, with Sam Ryder. That leads to stories from a songwriting retreat near Glastonbury, rediscovering his songwriting muscles and discovering that Sam apparently possesses an inexhaustible supply of energy. Elsewhere, Fil takes us around his Los Angeles studio and its collection of guitars, vintage synths, homemade instruments and things which make strange noises when attached to large pieces of metal. There is also a detour into his years touring with Robbie Williams, why he only managed around five minutes of Netflix’s Robbie documentary. Finally, Fil shares his candid thoughts on AI-generated music, why the creative process matters more than simply producing an end result, and the importance of keeping music, film and art connected to actual human beings. Geektown Talks To... ‘The Boys’ Sound Designer Russell Topal on Supes, Gore & The Series Finale

WARNING: This interview contains major spoilers for the final season and series finale of ‘The Boys’. On this episode of Geektown Talks To, Dave Elliott chats with Emmy-nominated sound effects editor and sound designer Russell Topal about bringing the gloriously violent world of ‘The Boys’ to life. Russell joined the Prime Video series for Season 4 before returning for its fifth and final season, earning an Emmy nomination for his work on the series finale, ‘Blood and Bone’. He discusses the challenge of inheriting the show’s established sonic identity, developing the sounds of its superpowers, and ensuring that a room full of battling Supes doesn’t become one exhausting wall of noise. We also discover why Eric Kripke’s notes usually involve making things wetter and more disgusting, how some very ordinary materials became some extremely unusual body parts, and which new characters gave Russell the greatest creative challenge. Away from ‘The Boys’, Russell talks about working on the global phenomenon ‘KPop Demon Hunters’, creating the more grounded world of the ‘Yellowstone’ franchise, and offers a tantalising clue about his next project. Geektown Talks To… Silo Showrunner Graham Yost About Season 3, Season 4 & The Show’s Biggest Mysteries

This week on Geektown Talks To…, Dave Elliott sits down with Graham Yost, showrunner of Apple TV’s acclaimed sci-fi drama ‘Silo’. With Season 3 approaching its finale, some of the huge questions hanging over the series are finally beginning to get answers. Graham talks about the challenge of making those answers as satisfying as the mysteries which came before them, and why Hugh Howey’s original novels gave him confidence that the story could deliver on its promises. We also discuss the challenges of adapting the second novel, keeping Rebecca Ferguson’s Juliette at the centre of the television series, and why memory became such an important part of Season 3. Graham also takes us behind the writing process for Season 3’s two timelines, explains how the team decided where to jump between them, and reveals just how far ahead they were able to plan the show’s four-season story. And, without spoiling anything, there are still some very big answers coming. Graham teases a “huge reveal” in the opening episode of Season 4 and gives us an indication of when we might finally see the concluding season. Plus, for those listening via the Geektown Radio feed, Dave has an update on when the main show will finally return after its post-Episode 500 break. Geektown Radio returns 15th September 2026. Geektown Talks To... ‘Hacks’ Production Designer Rob Tokarz: Building Deborah Vance’s Final Season

In this episode of Geektown Talks To..., Dave catches up with production designer Rob Tokarz as ‘Hacks’ takes its final bow. Rob first joined the Emmy-winning comedy as an art director in Season 2 before stepping up to production designer, helping shape the increasingly ambitious world surrounding Deborah Vance, Ava Daniels and the wonderfully strange collection of people orbiting them. We last spoke to Rob around a year ago, just before he began prep on Season 5. At that point, he had no idea what the writers were about to throw at him. Now the series has ended, he returns to reveal just how enormous that final challenge became. Rob talks about creating an astonishing number of sets across the season, jumping between Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York and Paris, recreating locations viewers might assume were real, and working alongside visual effects to make some extremely complicated sequences appear completely effortless. We also get into the return to Deborah Vance’s Vegas world, designing pieces of her history that had previously existed only in dialogue, the painstaking details that might never actually be noticed on screen, and how the production design quietly helps tell the story of both Deborah and Ava. Rob also reflects on joining ‘Hacks’ as an art director before eventually taking charge of its production design, the confidence he gained over several seasons, the friendships forged behind the scenes, and which sets from his time on the show will stay with him. Plus, with ‘Hacks’ now finished, we talk about what sort of worlds Rob would love to build next... and whether one particular piece of the show might just be sitting in storage ready for a possible return. Geektown Talks To… ‘The Avengers’ Author David Crichton About Classic ’60s TV Series

This week, Dave chats with author David Crichton about his new novel, ‘The Avengers: Death in Downing Street’, which returns John Steed and Emma Peel to the wonderfully stylish and eccentric world of the classic 1960s television series. And, just to avoid any confusion following the latest ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ trailer, we are talking bowler hats and leather catsuits here, not Marvel superheroes. David and Dave also have a little history together, having worked at the same design agency in a previous life. They discuss David’s journey from account handler to published author, and how a lockdown writing project eventually became the first completely original Steed and Peel adventure in decades. The conversation explores the surprisingly complicated road to getting a new ‘Avengers’ story approved, the challenge of capturing the unmistakable voices and chemistry of Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg, and translating such a visually distinctive television series onto the page. They also chat about weaving real history into the wonderfully peculiar world of ‘The Avengers’, whether the series could ever be successfully revived for television, and what David would like to do next. Plus, there are detours into ‘Doctor Who’, Korean television, ‘Reacher’, tie-in novels and the full-size Dalek occupying David’s office. ‘The Avengers: Death in Downing Street’ is available now in paperback and ebook, published by Titan Books. Geektown Talks To Boris Mojsovski: I Will Find You, Titans, 12 Monkeys, Rabbit Hole & More

In this episode of Geektown Talks To, Dave chats with cinematographer, director and filmmaker Boris Mojsovski, whose work includes Netflix’s Harlan Coben thriller ‘I Will Find You’, along with ‘Rabbit Hole’, ‘12 Monkeys’, ‘Titans’, ‘The Lost Symbol’, ‘The Madness’ and more. Boris talks about growing up around film sets, initially trying not to follow the family path into filmmaking, and how photography, writing and directing eventually pulled him back behind the camera. He also discusses the unusual position of being both a cinematographer and director on long-form television, and how that helps shape the visual identity of a series. We then dive into ‘I Will Find You’, exploring how Boris and the creative team built the show’s tense, grounded visual language, from its prison-set opening to the wider mystery that follows. He talks about creating a “visual manifesto” for the series, the challenge of making something feel real while still delivering thriller-level drama, and why the “geography of a face” can be one of the most powerful tools in visual storytelling. The conversation also moves into some of Boris’s other genre work, including the paranoia of ‘Rabbit Hole’, the time-travel complexity of ‘12 Monkeys’, and the superhero world of DC’s ‘Titans’. Plus, Boris teases his own upcoming film ‘Foreign Tongue’, talks about recent projects including ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ and ‘Into the Deep Blue’, and reveals the classic films he wishes he could have made himself. Geektown Talks To: Hillary Fyfe Spera On Shooting Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again

In this Geektown Talks To interview, Dave chats with cinematographer Hillary Fyfe Spera, the lead cinematographer behind both seasons one and two of Marvel’s ‘Daredevil: Born Again’. Hillary was there from the very beginning of the Disney+ series, shooting the pilot, finale, and seven of the nine episodes in season one, helping to establish the grounded, cinematic look of Matt Murdock’s return to Hell’s Kitchen. She also returned for season two, shooting half of the episodes, including the opening two, as the story pushed further into the conflict between Daredevil, Wilson Fisk, and a city under increasing pressure. During the interview, Hillary discusses how she first came to cinematography through still photography, and how her love of collaboration led her into film and television. She also talks about how ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ came to her, and how classic 1970s New York films such as ‘Taxi Driver’ and ‘The French Connection’ helped inform the visual direction of the series. We also dig into the visual contrast between Matt Murdock’s world and Fisk’s world, with Daredevil and the vigilantes shot in a more handheld, human, street-level style, while Fisk’s side of the story becomes more controlled, symmetrical and oppressive. Hillary explains how those visual rules evolved across the two seasons, and how they could shift as characters moved between worlds or began to lose control. Hillary also breaks down the show’s practical approach to Daredevil’s heightened senses, including the in-camera “sensory grande” technique, which uses multiple cameras, lenses, movement and aspect ratio changes to represent something that is not inherently visual. There is also plenty of discussion about the action, including working with the stunt team, keeping fight scenes grounded while still making them cinematic, and why the best sequences need emotional pauses rather than just relentless punching. Hillary talks about the huge East River boat oner in season two, shot at night with drone lighting, choreography and practical location challenges, along with the series’ BB Report segments and how they changed visually as the story developed. Plus, Hillary chats about what she is watching at the moment, her love of ‘The X-Files’, and why her dream future project would be a Western. ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Seasons 1 and 2 are available on Disney+. Geektown Talks To: Joséphine Jobert On ‘Saint-Pierre’, ‘Death In Paradise’ & Why Arch Changed Her Life

Geektown Talks To is back, and in this episode Dave sits down with actress Joséphine Jobert to discuss her new crime drama ‘Saint-Pierre’, which recently launched in the UK on U&Alibi. UK viewers will know Joséphine from ‘Death in Paradise’, but in ‘Saint-Pierre’ she takes on a very different kind of island detective role as Deputy Chief Geneviève “Arch” Archambault. Set on the French territory of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, just off the coast of Newfoundland, the series follows Arch as she is partnered with Donny “Fitz” Fitzpatrick, played by Allan Hawco, after Fitz is sent to the island following trouble back home. In the interview, Joséphine talks about why she was initially unsure about doing another police drama after ‘Death in Paradise’, what changed her mind when she read the script, and how Arch became a character who meant far more to her than she expected. She also discusses filming on Saint-Pierre itself, swapping Guadeloupe sunshine for much colder North Atlantic weather, the chemistry between Arch and Fitz, and what it is like working opposite Allan Hawco, who is not only her co-star, but also co-creator and executive producer of the show. Plus, Dave and Joséphine chat about the show’s success in Canada, the brutal Season 1 cliffhanger, the possibility of more ‘Saint-Pierre’, her upcoming projects, reality TV guilty pleasures, and why she would love to step into the world of Marvel. ‘Saint-Pierre’ Season 1 is airing now on U&Alibi in the UK. Geektown Talks To… Jules O’Loughlin on Percy Jackson, Practical Fantasy & Shooting the Impossible

For this episode of Geektown Talks To… (https://www.geektown.co.uk/category/geektown-podcast/geektown-talks-to/), Dave Elliott sits down with cinematographer Jules O’Loughlin (https://www.julesoloughlin.com/), whose work you’ll recognise from some of the most ambitious genre TV of the last decade. Jules recently completed work on Season 2 of the Emmy-winning Percy Jackson and the Olympians, returning to the show as it expands its scale, environments and action. He’s the only cinematographer to work across both current seasons, and while production is on a short Christmas hiatus, he’ll be heading back to Vancouver in the new year as Season 3 continues filming. In the conversation, Jules talks about shooting fantasy in a way that feels physical and grounded, why Season 2 of Percy Jackson leaned harder into real locations and large practical builds, and how you approach sequences involving speed, water, scale and creatures that don’t technically exist. He also digs into the collaborative reality of big TV productions, balancing technical precision with performance, and the problem-solving mindset needed when the camera is placed in less-than-friendly environments. Jules’ previous work includes Black Sails, Ms. Marvel, See, and The Old Man — shows known for their scale, visual ambition, and the kind of challenges that keep cinematographers permanently on their toes. 🎙️ Geektown Talks To… (https://www.geektown.co.uk/category/geektown-podcast/geektown-talks-to/) is Geektown’s interview podcast, featuring long-form conversations with the people working behind the scenes of TV, film, games and animation. 📻 You can also hear Dave every week on Geektown Radio (https://www.geektown.co.uk/category/geektown-podcast/) for TV news, reviews and UK air date info. 📚 And for something a little different, Geekstorians (https://www.geektown.co.uk/category/geektown-podcast/geekstorians/) explores the history of geek culture, from fandom and gaming to the evolution of genre storytelling. z3DImbewhUFfUinqO3z2 Hosted on Acast. In this episode of Geektown Talks To… (https://www.geektown.co.uk/category/geektown-podcast/geektown-talks-to/), Dave sits down with composer Greg Nicolett, whose work spans Disney animation, award-nominated game scores, sci-fi pilots and experimental live action projects. Greg talks about blending orchestral writing with unexpected sounds, from kazoos and chipmunk-style vocals in Dr. Seuss’s The Sneetches, to amplified cellos and duduk in Talon, and even a bowed one-string guitar for the horror feature Dead of Night. Greg shares how a viral collaboration with Shia LaBeouf led him into Disney’s animation world, how he approaches world-building through music, and why video games offer a unique creative space.
