Podcast Overview

Welkom to the Geeky Speechie podcast where we delve into the intersectionality of the health profession and geek culture. Your host, Mialotic, is a passionate speech-language pathologist that’s very nerdy about the science of communication as well as enthusiastic about a lot of aspects of geek culture. The show covers how video games, tabletop roleplaying, TV shows, movies, and even cosplay can serve as valuable tools for communication enhancement. We discuss the strides being made to make games and media more inclusive for individuals with disabilities as well as being more inclusive to everyone using the type of language we choose to use. The aim is to provide valuable insights, foster discussions, and create a community where listeners can embrace their passions in a meaningful way as well as make pop culture a bit less scary to clinicians and educators that don’t feel confident in this area.

Sign languages aren't universal and Gaming is listening || Communicate your way

Everyone communicates differently. We celebrate book week and speech pathology Australia week all in one, and with literacy day and International Day of Sign Languages coming up, we hopefully hit the right audience with this one. Sign language is a visual language expressed through physical movements instead of spoken words. The language relies on visible cues from hands, eyes, facial expressions, and movements to communicate. Although sign language is used primarily by people who are deaf or hard of hearing, it is also used by many hearing people. As with any spoken language, sign language has grammar and structure rules, and it has evolved over time. In speech pathology world we can borrow some Signs and use them alongside spoken language to increase language development in young children. Even some games are adding support for sign language, like Forza. Microsoft and Xbox still seems to pave the way in this space, but other platforms aren’t shying away.
