Blockbusters: Children of the Corn
In this 1984 adaptation of the Stephen King short story, a bunch of kids kill all of the adults in a small farm town in Nebraska. Instead of partying and doing normal kid stuff, these kids get real passionate about corn and the upcoming harvest. We discuss our old school field trips and possible exploitation of the Amish, Jennie thinks all gingers look alike, and Amye passionately tries to clear Stephen King's name. Blockbusters: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Finally! Amye convinces Jennie to sit down and watch the beloved 1971 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and it's worth it just to hear her reaction to the dreadful Grandpa Joe. Other discussions include Jeff Bezos and his interesting journey, more Bon Jovi news-whether you want it or not, and get ready Gen X: everything is a test or a trick. Blockbusters: War Games!!!!!!
Amye PLAYED herself and is forced to recap 1983's War Games with Jennie, who loves this movie and has 85 index cards to accompany the episode. Matthew Broderick guides us through the dangers of AI, complete with the bald dude from Top Gun, Dabney "Daphne" Coleman, and a father who butters his corn like a bad *ss. We discuss being scarred for life by The Ring, Amye's complete lack of knowledge around computers, and Jennie allows Amye to discuss JFK. Blockbusters: Pretty in Pink
Join us as we weigh in on the classic John Hughes love story of a high school torn apart by socioeconomic factors. Andie is an unpopular high schooler who has three handsome boys fawning over her, two of whom are filthy rich, and the other worships the ground she walks on. While Andie struggles to choose which boy she’ll take to the prom, she seeks solace in a variety of characters including: an eccentric Annie Potts, a young (and still yucky) Andrew Dice Clay, and Andie’s heartbroken and troubled father. Amye is triggered by gym class, and Jennie has a visceral reaction to Ducky’s energy. Blockbusters: Top Gun
Amye tries to resist, but eventually falls for 1986’s Tom Cruise as Maverick, a Top Gun fighter pilot with a grossly-inflated ego. She doesn’t stand a chance, however, against Kelly McGillis who is a whole five years older than him and is apparently robbing the cradle. The beautiful California coastline with its eight-hour sunsets is the backdrop for our story about a group of boys, er...men, competing for the title of Top Ego. Tom Cruise just can’t seem to stay inside the lines as he plays volleyball in a bomber jacket, rides a motorcycle without a helmet, and does something with a MIG that we don’t understand. Did we mention he’s a Maverick? Blockbusters: Halloween
A six-year-old maniac murders his sister on Halloween, then does a fifteen-year stint in a mental hospital under what appears to be the subpar psychiatric care of Dr. Loomis. We ask the number one question of the 1970s and 80s, “Where the hell are these parents?” and discover how risky an endeavor babysitting was if you wanted to live past your teens. There are some unsolicited opinions from Gen Z’ers and we even encounter an old pal from Walnut Grove. Blockbusters: Nightmare on Elm Street
Jennie is crankier than usual since she is forced to watch this sad excuse for a horror movie (because of some shady Facebook poll) when she could have been watching Cobra Kai. Amye tries to defend the concept of a maniac stalking your dreams, as we struggle to piece together this trainwreck of a narrative. Poor Johnny Depp who is having an equally difficult time with the script, dials it in while he waits to get murdered. Basically, this movie was TERRIBLE. You’re welcome. Blockbusters: The Karate Kid
Journey with us back to 1984, as we follow the tale of Daniel LaRusso and his bully Johnny, who wears his shorts WAY too short, even for the 80’s. Daniel and his mom move from the crowded, rude, hellscape that is the east coast to beautiful, sunny California, where everyone is friendly and helpful--nope. Instead, Daniel is welcomed by being run off the road on his bicycle (yes, a kid’s bicycle) by guys on motorcycles who are 3-4 years older than him, because that’s badass. He decides to fight back by learning karate, from a book... His “elderly” super, who is 55 and happens to be a karate master, learns of Daniel’s dilemma and decides to take on this project and get some help with chores around the house. We learn of Jennie’s karate career and Amye insists that no one who went to this movie wanted to watch a movie about karate. They challenge Johnny and his dojo, who are all obviously on extra doses of testosterone, to a battle in an upcoming tournament. Daniel lives. Cut to black. Blockbusters: Heathers
Trigger Warnings: School violence, gun violence, sexual assault, extreme homophobia, toxic masculinity, suicide and murder. Join us as we revisit a seminal movie from our adolescence, which says a lot. Jennie reveals her ideal high school boyfriend dressed like Highlander and was a straight-up sociopath, while Amye reveals her love of angry diary writing. We actually notice Veronica’s parents this time around and their weird Wes Anderson reality, and we do an amazing impression of a conversation between Christian Slater and Gary Busey. Come along as we discuss the hard slap of the 90s that woke us from our 80s coma. Blockbusters: Howard the Duck
Jump into this $31 million dollar dumpster fire with us as we follow Howard, an evolved duck from another planet who falls for a heavy metal vixen in Cleveland, Ohio. Yes, that is a sadly accurate summary. If you need more convincing, Tears for Fears attacks Lea Thompson and the principal from Ferris Bueller turns into a dark lord of the universe. This goes from a bad Roger Rabbit to a high-budget Evil Dead, and I’m not sure if that makes it better or worse. Blockbusters: Dirty Dancing
Join us as we go on holiday with the Housemans in the summer of 1963 and meet Baby, Insane Lisa, Gorgeous Penny, Johnny (the fonz), Douchebag Robbie, and Pencil D*ck Neil. Twenty-five-year-old Amye apologies to fictional Johnny for some insensitive jokes. We also discover that Jennie would have never given Baby that $250 if she were her dad, because nobody in our family is that innocent. We learn that Baby probably now has an STD and Amye does a Post-It note’s worth of research.
