“I Got Arrested at Ocean Basket!” | Shana Fife on Ougat, Womanhood & Cape Town | Ep164

How does one get arrested in Ocean Basket? Cape Town writer, published author and content creator Shana Fife joins us on the podcast to tell the story, and it only gets deeper from there. Shana grew up moving between worlds: coloured friends and white friends, Pelican Heights and Strandfontein, the Cape Flats and the suburbs. She learned fast that there are many kinds of coloured identity, and that belonging isn't always handed to you. With no safe space, she turned to creativity, from her blog The Dirty Girl Diaries to the "Hoe With Kids" and finally her book Ougat, a title with a deliberately double meaning, both a cheeky label and a term of endearment. We get into healing out loud and being judged for "praating uit die huis uit," finding her people among other authors, and the hard choices of parenthood. She shares how she's raising her kids differently and why she keeps violence out of her home. Shana is clear that she's no man-hater and that men are victims of patriarchy too. The conversation turns heavy as we address the femicide crisis in South Africa. It's uncomfortable, honest, and necessary. Plus, a round of Fact or Fake, and Shana's message to her younger self. The Girl With 5 Jobs: Tara Roos on Politics, Coloured Identity & Our Future in RSA | Ep 163

This week on Gen C, we sit down with Tara Roos; political analyst, journalist, commentator, author and self-identified "Girl with five jobs" Tara’s obsession with politics started at home, growing up in a family where the news was always on, opinions were always flying and her dad would quiz her on current affairs. Today, she’s gone from watching the news to helping make it, reporting from Parliament and breaking down South Africa’s political landscape for everyday people. We get into the big questions facing South Africa: Why do young people feel disconnected from politics? Why ordinary South Africans care more about the price of bread and petrol than GDP and fiscal policy? Are our existing policies actually enough to tackle youth unemployment? And why does starting a business involve so much red tape? We also unpack the experience of being a young coloured person in South African politics, the stereotypes that come with it, and the complicated relationship Cape Town has with the rest of the country. Tara shares her thoughts on the DA, non-racialism, democracy, nation-building and political division, while Rizaan has a few things to say about Helen Zille. We also dive into Tara’s book Where To From Here, where she breaks down political concepts like populism and hyperfragmentation, and asks whether South Africans actually have more in common than our political parties would have us believe. And of course, we end things with a very Gen C-style game: WINNERS, LOSERS & SURVIVORS - inspired by Tara’s book. From Cape Town politics to youth unemployment, Parliament, identity, democracy, finance, travel and the future of South Africa, this is a proper conversation about where we are - and where we go from here. How R200 feeds a child for a whole school month! | Outside The Bowl Africa Ep162

In this episode, we sit down with Mark Maingaard, CEO and spokesperson for Outside the Bowl (OTB) Africa, as they celebrate 10 years of fighting child hunger across Africa. From his humble beginnings in Lansdowne and navigating life at Rondebosch Boys’ High, to serving as a chef in the SA Navy, Mark shares his incredible personal journey and the 2009 divine calling that redirected his life toward feeding vulnerable children. We dive deep into the origins of OTB Africa, from its roots in Paarl alongside founders Jae and Debra Evans, to building a sustainable model through Kingdom Foods and Handcrafted Foods. Discover how OTB Africa ensures that 100% of public donations go directly into food production, keeping operational overheads completely separate. Mark doesn't hold back on the brutal realities facing Mzansi's youth today: the heartbreaking definitions of "stunting" and "wasted" in Early Childhood Development (ECD), and the troubling reality that South Africa spends significantly less on feeding a child than on maintaining a prisoner. Plus, we talk team culture, a legendary world-record attempt featuring 30 giant pots of potjiekos, the great generational debate over afval (tripe & trotters). We also put Mark through an impact-driven version of Say Ma Now, asking: 💰 If you had R100 million to tackle hunger in one South African city, where would you start? 🌍 And if you could choose any person, dead or alive, to become an ambassador for Outside the Bowl Africa, who would you choose? As Outside the Bowl Africa celebrates its 10-year anniversary, this episode is a powerful conversation about food, faith, purpose, poverty and what it really means to serve your community .Find out more about Outside the Bowl Africa, follow their work and learn how you can support the mission through their website and social media. 📍 South African stories.
