[…] About 30% of people with diabetes will develop a foot ulcer in their lifetime, and amongst those, about 10% of them will end up with needing amputation, usually a digit rather than a major one above the ankle. In many people as well, about 20% of people with diabetes, they'll experience painful neuropathy and that will lead to quite a high medication burden and sometimes adverse effects from medication. And some people unfortunately develop both complications at the same time, the reduced sensation and yet the painful type. And how do these complications develop? Well, we think that elevated glucose levels are a contributor, certainly in type 1 diabetes that's the case, but also dyslipidemia probably contributes as well, and there's ongoing research in this space.
