How a Basketball Career Nearly Became an Idol

What happens when basketball, fatherhood, and faith collide in one man’s life? Robert O'Kelley opens up about the heart condition that forced him to rethink everything, the idol he had to surrender, and the daily habits that keeps God at the center now. Anthony Buntyn sits down with Robert for a candid conversation about becoming a man of God in the middle of real life - coaching, working with students, leading Bible study, and showing up with purpose when it counts most. If you’re trying to keep your faith from sliding to the bottom of your list, this episode will hit home. You’ll discover how Robert stays grounded through worship, scripture, prayer, serving at church, and intentional time with his daughter. He also shares how a strong church community, small-group accountability, and honest conversation helped him grow through marriage counseling, setbacks, and the pressure of being an example to young people. We break down the power of forgiveness, why boldness matters when God puts someone in front of you, and how one simple prayer in a gym can become a divine appointment. Robert also reflects on the role basketball played in shaping his character, why he wishes he had used his platform differently at Wake Forest and beyond, and how he’s now using that same passion to pour into the next generation. Anthony and Robert also talk about what real Christian community looks like, why men need other men of faith around them, and how spiritual consistency shows up in ordinary moments - at work, in worship, in your home, and in how you treat people who don’t treat you well. Essential listening if you need encouragement to put faith first, lead with grace, forgive faster, and live with more boldness in everyday life.
