   # San Andreas Fault Stress Reaches Historic Levels as US Geological Hazards Demand Urgent Monitoring

The latest geology news in the United States spans earthquake hazards, volcanic activity, mineral resources, and improved mapping of the ground beneath the country. ScienceDaily reports that stress on Southern California’s San Andreas and San Jacinto faults has reached levels among the highest recorded over the past one thousand years. Researchers describe a possible earthquake gate, a section of fault that may influence whether strain remains localized or spreads into a larger rupture. The finding does not predict an imminent earthquake, but it highlights the continuing seismic risk across the Los Angeles and inland Southern California region. On October sixth, a magnitude five point five earthquake struck the Aleneva region of Alaska, according to Reuters and the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake occurred about eighty seven kilometers deep, meaning much of the shaking was generated well below the surface. Alaska remains one of the most seismically active parts of the United States because the Pacific Plate is forced beneath the North American Plate. The United States Geological Survey also began low level aircraft flights over eastern California and a small section of western Nevada on October fifth. The survey will use airborne instruments to image buried geological structures, faults, and potential mineral resources. The work is part of a broader national effort to produce more detailed geological information for hazard planning, water management, energy development, and critical mineral exploration. Hawaii provided another major geological development. The United States Geological Survey reported that Kilauea experienced an intrusion beneath the summit caldera during an ongoing eruption on September thirtieth. Magma opened a new underground pathway beneath Halemaumau, while lava, spatter, and flames continued from vents at the surface. The event demonstrates how volcanic systems can redirect magma without immediately ending an eruption. A USGS led study of samples from American Samoa identified a previously undocumented process of manganese mineral formation. Warm fluids beneath the seafloor replaced ancient carbonate sediments and concentrated manganese, offering new insight into how seafloor mineral deposits develop. Worldwide, researchers are also revising the history of major geological events. Scientists reported that the buried Ames impact crater in Oklahoma formed about three hundred seventy million years ago, nearly one hundred million years later than previously believed. Together, these developments show a common pattern in modern geology, combining field surveys, aircraft imaging, deep sampling, and improved dating to reveal how landscapes and hazards change beneath the surface. USGS Discovers 1,271 Critical Mineral Deposits Across US States and Territories, Expands National Geologic Mapping

According to the United States Geological Survey, the most significant recent United States geology update is a new inventory of critical mineral deposits. The database identifies 1,271 known deposits containing 59 critical minerals across 41 states and Puerto Rico. About one third of those deposits have no recorded past production, highlighting both the scale of domestic resources and the challenge of turning geological potential into reliable supplies. The United States Geological Survey also reported that its Cooperative National Geologic Map now covers all 50 states and United States territories. The expanded map provides a nationwide framework for understanding rocks, faults, groundwater, mineral resources, and geologic hazards. The information is especially important for infrastructure planning, resource exploration, and emergency preparedness. Earthquake activity remained modest but noticeable along the Pacific margin. On September 29, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck about six kilometers west northwest of Wauna, Washington, at a depth of roughly 28 kilometers. The United States Geological Survey recorded weak shaking and assigned a green Pager alert, indicating a low likelihood of serious casualties or economic losses. In Northern California, a magnitude 3.7 earthquake occurred near Boonville in Mendocino County on September 25, followed about twenty minutes later by a magnitude 2.7 event nearby. No damage or injuries were reported, and the responsible fault has not been identified. Volcanic systems in the United States also remained active. Kilauea in Hawaii continued to produce shallow earthquakes beneath Halemaumau, including a magnitude 3.4 event. Scientists warned that ground cracks, rockfalls, and unstable crater walls may become more dangerous as magma continues moving beneath the summit. In Alaska, Great Sitkin remained at an orange watch level, while Shishaldin stayed at a yellow advisory level. A new United States Geological Survey study of samples from American Samoa identified hydrothermal manganese mineralization beneath the seafloor. The finding shows how warm fluids can concentrate metals below oceanic volcanic systems and may improve understanding of mineral formation in remote parts of the Pacific. Worldwide, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck waters near New Caledonia on September 26 at a depth of about ten kilometers. The United States Tsunami Warning System reported no tsunami threat to Hawaii, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, or American Samoa. Together, this week’s developments show geology operating across connected systems, from magma and earthquakes to seafloor mineral deposits and the mapping of resources needed for future development. US Geological Survey Maps 1,271 Critical Mineral Deposits While New Research Reveals Earthquake Risks Along West Coast Fault Lines

The latest geology news in the United States centers on critical minerals, earthquake hazards, and new evidence about how major tectonic systems change over time. On September twenty ninth, the United States Geological Survey released an updated database identifying one thousand two hundred seventy one known deposits of fifty nine critical minerals across forty one states and Puerto Rico. Nearly one third of these deposits contain documented resources but have never been developed, highlighting a large potential supply of minerals important to energy technology, manufacturing, and national security. The updated inventory is part of the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative, a nationwide effort using airborne surveys and other modern methods to improve geological maps. The data will help scientists and policymakers identify areas that may warrant additional exploration, while also showing that mineral resources are distributed widely rather than concentrated in only a few western states. Earthquake research is also producing important findings along the West Coast. A study reported this week suggests that the Cascadia subduction zone, which stretches from northern California to British Columbia, and the northern San Andreas fault in California may have ruptured close together in the past. Researchers examined evidence preserved in roughly three thousand one hundred years of ocean sediments. The findings do not predict when another earthquake will occur, but they raise the possibility that a major Cascadia earthquake and a large San Andreas earthquake could happen in relatively rapid succession. Off Vancouver Island, scientists have also captured evidence that a subduction zone can tear apart gradually rather than stop all at once. This discovery offers a new view of how tectonic boundaries weaken and may improve understanding of earthquake and tsunami risk around the Pacific Northwest. In California, a preliminary magnitude four point three earthquake struck offshore near the Mendocino fault zone early Tuesday, September twenty ninth. The United States Geological Survey located the earthquake at a depth of about one point four miles. No immediate major damage was reported, and scientists said the chance that this event is a foreshock to a larger earthquake remains very low. Together, these developments show geology becoming increasingly practical and forward looking. Scientists are combining ancient sediments, detailed fault studies, airborne mapping, and real time earthquake data to understand both the resources beneath the United States and the hazards developing along its changing boundaries.
