Michael Sweetney's Legacy at Georgetown | Georgetown Hoyas Basketball News
Michael Sweetney, Georgetown’s dominant big man and NBA draft pick, has passed away at just 32 — leaving behind a legacy defined by his unstoppable college dominance, All-Big East honors, and unforgettable performances like his 35-point, 20-rebound quadruple-overtime thriller. A cornerstone of the Hoyas’ offense for three seasons, he was drafted ninth overall by the Knicks and played four NBA seasons with the Knicks and Bulls — but it was his Georgetown days that cemented his place as one of the program’s all-time greats. The basketball world mourns the loss of a player who commanded the paint, inspired teammates, and will forever be remembered as “forever a Hoya.”

Michael Sweetney’s Legacy Beyond the Court | Georgetown Hoyas Basketball News
Michael Sweetney, the former Georgetown basketball star who dazzled with 18 points and 9 rebounds a game, has passed away at 43. Drafted ninth overall in 2003 alongside LeBron and Carmelo, he played four NBA seasons before chasing his passion overseas. A devoted family man, he poured his heart into raising his kids and supporting his wife of 30 years. After retiring from play, he turned to coaching, leading Yeshiva University to a 50-game win streak and two titles. Despite his on-court brilliance, he battled depression and grief after losing his father — a reminder that even legends carry unseen burdens.
