How We Can Be Better Allies & Support Black-Owned Beauty Brands

These past few weeks have been challenging, upsetting, and for a lot of us, eye-opening. It’s been a sombre time for black people in America in the wake of George Floyd’s murder and there is no excuse for the racial inequality that marginalized folk experience at the hands of police officers. It’s clear to see that the US has hit a breaking point and will not stand for these kinds of injustices any longer. The concern has even spread across the globe and brought to light similar issues that are faced outside of America. Though we are scared and taking on the emotional weight of all of this at the moment, we are not helpless. Many organizations and non-for-profits are actively taking donations and are constantly working to end violence towards people of color. Black-owned beauty brands such as Fenty Beauty and Pat McGrath Labs are also doing their part to be as inclusive as possible in their shade ranges and products, so every skin tone is considered in production. It’s up to us as consumers and allies to make a concerted effort to purchase from ethical brands and do our part in contributing to this movement however we can. I’ve listed all of the brands mentioned in this episode, as well as some racial justice organizations you can support and donate to as well. Thank you so much for listening! In This Episode You Will Learn: Some background on the racial injustice that is experienced throughout the US (0:49) My perspective on this situation as an Indian woman & What I want to teach my daughter about racial inequality (2:24) What the aim of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement consists of (5:02) Ways that we can support this movement and be allies and advocates for change (5:37) How Sephora is contributing to ‘The National Black Justice Coalition’ (7:07) A list of black-owned beauty brands & Some backstory on a few of the founders (8:03) Black-owned beauty brands I haven’t used yet but are on my list to try out (16:02) Connect With Hanny Patel: Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1060719107632256) LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/hannypatel/) Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/hanny._patel/) Email: getglowing@hannypatel.com (mailto:getglowing@hannypatel.com) Black-Owned Beauty Brands Mentioned In This Episode: Fenty Beauty (https://www.fentybeauty.com/) Pat McGrath Labs (https://www.patmcgrath.com/) Coloured Raine Cosmetics (https://colouredraine.com/) Briogeo (https://briogeohair.com/) Juvia’s Place (https://www.juviasplace.com/) Uoma Beauty (https://uomabeauty.com/) Mented Cosmetics (https://www.mentedcosmetics.com/) Danessa Myricks Beauty (https://www.danessamyricksbeauty.com/) Range Beauty (https://www.rangebeauty.com/) Beauty Bakerie (https://www.beautybakerie.com/) Ace Beaute (https://www.acebeaute.com/) B.Simone Beauty (https://bsimonebeauty.com/) Dehiya Beauty (https://dehiyabeauty.com/) Hyperskin (https://gethyperskin.com/) BeautyStat (https://www.beautystat.com/) The Lip Bar (https://www.thelipbar.com/) Unsun (https://www.unsuncosmetics.com/) Pholk Beauty (https://pholkbeauty.com/) Pear Nova (https://pearnova.com/gel) Janet and Jo. How to Slow Down the Aging Process

Aging is a process that we all go through, whether we like it or not. Our bones lose some of their volume, our muscles atrophy, and in the skin itself, the collagen shrinks up, so we have less of the hydrating agents in the dermis. We cannot avoid these structural changes, but we can at least help our bodies to slow them down. Sue – my guest today - is one of the specialists that take great pleasure in helping others feel good and look good, because that definitely changes the energy released into the world. She has achieved the highest level of skincare certifications as a Master-level esthetician with a CMEM license, qualifying her for advanced skincare measures. Sue has a passion for patient education with a primary focus on the relationship between skin health and nutrition. She is committed to educating patients and communities on the most effective means of achieving their best skin. Sue has attended numerous select conferences with the leaders in her discipline, acquiring advanced education in peel and device therapies. I’m sure we all want to look forever young and natural, so tune in to Episode 04 of Get Glowing, to learn all about the fight against aging and what we should incorporate in our routine to win the battle. Take Care of Your Skin at the Deepest Level

We can only do so much in terms of taking care of our skin, topically. For example, if our skin is rough or dry, we can put moisturizer on, but the actual hydration has to have internal sources. Just how the beauty starts from the inside, so does the health of our skin. Our gut accumulates lots of toxins throughout time, and these toxins manifest themselves in multiple ways in our body, including in the form of acne, headaches, and plenty of other conditions. So, in today’s episode, Liza and I talk about something that we don’t always think about: skincare at our deepest level - and she shares with us how what is on the inside can show up in all sorts of ways on the outside. Liza Paz has been a Colon Therapist at Body Zen Alive for the last 4 years, and I can tell you, from the many times I’ve been visiting her as a patient, that besides her professional expertise she loves to talk about all things health and beauty - and in this episode, she shares her routines and the things that make her feel confident and beautiful. In her free time, she enjoys running outdoors - and get this: she loves running uphill! Have you met any other person that does that and actually enjoys it? Well, Liza is full of surprises, so tune in and listen to Episode 03 of Get Glowing, because we’ve got some interesting topics that I’m sure will pique your interest! Some questions I ask: What is your first beauty memory? (02:20) What is colon hydrotherapy? (10:40) What are some of the benefits that a person can see both immediately and in the longer term? (20:43) How has your business been affected by the quarantine? Are you still open right now? (30:35) How are you filling your time these days, besides going into the office? (34:03) In this episode, you will learn: Liza’s beauty routine. (08:14) How the process of colon therapy works. (11:52) What to look for when choosing a colon therapist. (14:34) The recommended frequency of colon therapy sessions. (15:56) How colon therapy positively affects our skin. (22:01) The reasons why flight attendants and airline pilots are adding colon therapy to their routine. (28:41) How to take care of your eyebrows. You are perfect the way you are, and at the end of the day, it’s not about trying to be somebody else or looking like another person - it’s about being who you are. Today, Diana and I will be talking about her amazing paths along her career journey, her triumph over breast cancer and how that changed her, and also, how she’s approaching her day to day differently now, in our new normal in the world of COVID. Diana Gallo has been a model for over 20 years and appeared on magazine covers, commercials, television shows, movies, music videos, and print catalogs. She is a professional make-up artist and also a certified yoga instructor who uses yoga and breathwork to help her students feel grounded, calm, and confident under any circumstances. She has recently opened the Manhattan Model Studio (https://manhattanmodelstudio.com/) that goes hand in hand with Billy Gallo’s business, the Manhattan Actor Studio. Diana and her husband’s combined talents and knowledge make them experts in the modeling and acting industries. Diana’s ultimate goal is to teach her students life-long skills, which will carry them through any of their endeavors, so listen to Episode 02 of Get Glowing, where she shares some of these skills with all of us and of course, her beauty tips and routines. Some questions I ask: What is your first beauty memory? (03:13) While you were going to make-up school at night, you were also holding down a full-time day job working for the government. (07:15) What drove Diana to pursue her passion, and not settle with the comfort of a steady job.
