Letâs talk about it: why communication shapes your whole life (and how to do it better)
We communicate every single day⊠but somehow, no one ever teaches us how to communicate well. In this episode, we unpack why communication breaks down, how social conditioning shapes the way we express ourselves, and why so many relationship issues are actually communication issues in disguise. We also chat about our growing reliance on AI to write texts, emails and difficult messages, whether it's helping or hurting our communication skills, and why being comfortable with awkward conversations is a skill worth building. We cover: đ Why we often contribute to communication breakdowns without realising it đ€ Are we outsourcing too many conversations to AI? đŻâïž How gender expectations influence the way we communicate đâïž Why women are often labelled "bossy" for being direct âš Practical ways to become a more confident communicator đ The difference between being clear and being liked 𫶠Why communication is always a two-way street Practical takeaways: Practice assertiveness in low-stakes situations. Stop expecting people to read your mind. You can be kind and clear. Someone else's reaction isn't always a reflection of how well you communicated. Journal prompts: Do I feel safe being honest about what I need? What communication habit is helping my relationships... and what habit is hurting them? How do I want the people I care about to feel after talking with me? Communication recs: â¶ïž The science behind dramatically better conversations (https://youtu.be/lg48Bi9DA54) | Charles Duhigg | TEDxManchester đ Crucial Conversations (https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/15014.Crucial_Conversations) â Kerry Patterson et al.đ You're Not Listening (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/45892276-you-re-not-listening) â Kate Murphyđ The Next Conversation (https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/215514806-the-next-conversation) â Jefferson Fisher đ Subscribe to  to be the first to know when new eps drop https://substack.com/@getittogetherpod (https://substack.com/@getittogetherpod)đŹ DM us - https://www.instagram.com/getittogether_pod (https://www.instagram.com/getittogether_pod) đ Share this episode with someone who needs to hear it âȘ stream cafe - boba date (http://youtube.com/watch?v=kj1MDJXJ7-I) This is a public episode. Just Start - Making Space For Creativity As An Adult With Emma Whines
At what point did we collectively decide hobbies were⊠optional? TBH probably somewhere between paying bills, replying to emails with âjust circling back,â and trying to drink enough water đ€ creativity quietly got demoted to a ânice in theoryâ category. Right next to journalling and stretching. This week on the pod, we had our first guest (!!), Emma Whines, who is what we would describe as a creative diehard â aka someone who just⊠keeps picking things up and trying them. Reading, sewing, music, learning to ride a motorbike?!? And it got us thinking: maybe the issue isnât that weâre not creative anymore. Maybe weâve just stopped making space for it. đ Subscribe to https://substack.com/@getittogetherpod (https://substack.com/@getittogetherpod) to be the first to know when new eps drop đŹ DM us - What hobbies are you (inconsistently) into right now? Resolutions but Regulated đ§đŒ âïž
The year doesnât start in January - and neither should you. TLDR the Gregorian calendarâs start date is arbitrary, disconnected from nature, and primarily a construct of historical and commercial influence etc etc. So in lieu of that, letâs find a New Year that works for us - here are just some you can choose from: - Astrological New Year: Astrologically, the new year begins when the Sun enters Aries, which occurs around the Spring Equinox. - Personal New Year: Many feel their personal cycle restarts on their birthday, which is seen as a more meaningful, individualised time to set new goals and reflect on the past year. - Lunar New Year: Celebrated by many cultures (Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean) based on a lunisolar calendar, that we celebrated just last week on Feb 17. What Weâre Chatting About - Why Shannon is NOT a New Yearâs Resolution girl - Making intentions from alignment vs. pressure - Slutty little glasses (https://theconversation.com/slutty-little-glasses-mens-eyewear-fashion-is-the-history-of-seeing-and-being-seen-262518) (IYKYK) - The psychological spiral of online shopping cart purgatory It wouldnât be a new year without a vision board!! Tenacity: You've Got You
Ever have one of those weeks where everything feels a bit too much? Same here. We unpack the idea of tenacityânot just the âpush through no matter whatâ version, but the gentler, more grounded kind that keeps us anchored when everything around us is shifting. đ In This Episode - Redefining tenacity: why strength isnât always about pushing harder - Georgiaâs story of moving overseas during the pandemic â and learning to say yes to small, scary things - Shannonâs high school rejection story, and how it became a quiet turning point toward purpose - The power of humour and lightness when life gets heavy - Simple, practical ways to find your anchor and build inner strength đż Key Takeaways âš Patience is strength. Everything meaningful takes time. âš Rest is not quitting. Pausing helps you come back clearer. âš Connection builds resilience. Let others helpâyou donât have to do it all alone. âš Do the basics well. The boring, grounding habits are what keep you steady. â Reflection Prompt How are you your own anchor? What helps you? Navigating Social Media and Body Image
Our latest social media deep dives Georgia: Dog food supplements - senior dog owners IYKYK Irelandâs National Ploughing Championships (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOqY_cCCO_k/?igsh=anZub3N3bmdiajUy) Shannon: Nina Dobrevâs breakup with her snowboarder boyfriend Homewares Online courses Social Media and Self-Perception: A Love-Hate Thing Unfortunately IG has more than just Reels about farm fairs and dog supplementsâwe chatted about how a lot of womenâs health/ fitspo content can be quite toxic. Itâs not just annoyingâitâs harmful. Weâve seen a huge spike in eating disorders in the last few years, especially since COVID lockdowns. Things like âWhat I Eat in a Dayâ videos or the marketing of products like detox teas (ugh) can really mess with your head, especially if youâre already feeling vulnerable. Our Brains Werenât Built for This Something weâve been learning (and reminding ourselves constantly) is that our brains literally werenât designed for this. Human brains evolved in a totally different worldâone without endless scrolling, notifications, or constant access to curated highlight reels. Our ancestors had to pay attention to their immediate environment for survival. Now? Weâre overloaded with updates, opinions, drama, and comparisonsâmost of which have nothing to do with our real lives. Itâs no wonder we feel exhausted and anxious after just ten minutes of scrolling. This constant bombardment leads to cognitive fatigue, emotional burnout, and sometimes that feeling of just being totally âoffâ without knowing why. Social Media Addiction Is a Real Thing Letâs talk dopamine. Every time you refresh your feed or get a notification, your brain gets a little hitâa reward that keeps you coming back for more. But like a pokie machine, itâs unpredictable. Sometimes you get a rush of likes and comments, and sometimes...crickets. That inconsistency is exactly what makes it so addictive. I (Georgia) have noticed that I sometimes use social media as a coping mechanismâwhen Iâm overwhelmed or stressed, I scroll to numb out. But honestly? I always feel worse after. Itâs like eating junk food when youâre sadâit gives you a temporary distraction but doesnât actually fix anything. So What Can We Actually Do About It? Weâre not here to tell you to delete all your apps and live in the woods (though, tempting). But there are a few small things we both try to do to keep social media in check: Delay the scroll: Try to be phone free for the first 30 mins after waking up. Clean up your feed: If youâre scrolling and a post comes up that doesnât make you feel good - click that unsubscribe button - or select âshow me less content like thisâ Use the screen time setting on your phone Need to focus? Use Do Not Disturb - or just put your phone in another room Digital detoxes: Iâve taken full-on breaks before, and honestly? I feel so much better for it - try deleting your socials for a few days (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0747563225000573) and see how you feel. Letâs Talk Authenticity
This week, weâre diving deep into a topic that feels both so important and a little terrifying: authenticity. What does it really mean to show up as your true self? How do you do that without feeling emotionally nakedâor burning out in the process? If youâve ever struggled with people-pleasing, perfectionism, or the fear of being âtoo much,â this episode is for you. 𧥠đĄ What Is Authenticity, Really? "Authenticity" gets thrown around a lotâespecially online. But to us, itâs not about oversharing or turning your trauma into content. Itâs about: Getting honest with yourself Living in alignment with your values Setting boundaries that feel good Letting the messy, unfiltered parts exist (without apology) Itâs not a performance. Itâs a practice. đ Vulnerability + Art = Magic (And Maybe Some Sweat) Letâs be real: putting this podcast out into the world? Itâs vulnerable as hell. But thatâs what makes it powerful. Whether you're creating art, writing a poem, or just having a real convoâvulnerability is the gateway to connection. Scary? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely. đŹ The Fear of Being Seen We talk about the very real fear of being truly seen. Itâs that push-pull between wanting to be visible and fearing judgment. But hereâs the truth: you canât build real connection if you're hiding the real you. đ± Still Figuring It Out? SAME. Spoiler: thereâs no final destination when it comes to being authentic. Weâre all a work in progressâtrying, messing up, learning, evolving. And thatâs kind of the point. âš Tiny Ways to Be More You (Without Burning Out) Here are a few gentle ways to explore your authenticity: Check in with your values Journal, meditate, voice-noteâwhatever works. Ask yourself:â What actually matters to me?â If money wasnât a factor, what would my day look like? Try these journal prompts from the Return to Nature Substack (https://returntonature.substack.com/p/august-and-imbolc) (https://returntonature.substack.com/p/august-and-imbolc (https://returntonature.substack.com/p/august-and-imbolc)) :â How can I courageously show up as my authentic self in the places I usually hold back? Gut checks > people-pleasing Tune into your body. How do you feel around certain people or in certain spaces? Rest is part of the work Hustle culture lied. Rest isnât lazyâitâs necessary. Try creating time for stillness (bonus points if itâs in nature đż). đŻâïž Find Your People Stop chasing approval. Start finding the people who get you and love your weirdness. Theyâre out thereâand theyâll feel like home. đ A Love Note to Our Younger Selves (And Maybe Yours Too) Youâre not too much. Youâre not behind. Youâre just growing into who youâre meant to be. Stay weird. Stay curious. Keep showing up. Weâd love to hear from you! What does authenticity look like in your life right now? More Than 9 to 5: Redefining What Work Means to You
Are you feeling kinda off at work lately? Like youâre doing all the ârightâ things, checking all the boxes, but still wondering, âIs this really it?â If youâve been daydreaming about quitting your job, switching fields, starting something totally newâor just finding something that actually feels like youâtrust me, youâre not alone. This week on the pod, weâre talking all things careers. âš Leaving the âSafeâ Job for Something That Feels Right Shannon recently did the thing so many of us fantasize aboutâshe left her stable, âon paper perfectâ job because deep down, it just didnât feel right anymore. Yeah, it was scary. But on the other side? She found more purpose, clarity, and that little spark that had been missing for a while. If youâve ever felt stuck in a job that looks good from the outside but feels meh on the inside, her story is going to hit hard in the best way. đž Passion vs. Paycheck â The Eternal Struggle Letâs be real: not everyone can just up and quit their job to chase a dream. Weâve got bills. Rent. Real-life responsibilities. We donât pretend itâs easyâbut we do talk about how thereâs room to get creative. Maybe itâs a side hustle. Maybe itâs a slow transition. Or maybe itâs just finally giving yourself permission to ask, âWhat do I actually want?â You donât have to choose between stability and joy. Thereâs a way to make space for bothâyou just have to figure out what that looks like for you. đ§ That Gut Feeling? Yeah⊠Trust It. You know that little voice inside you? The one thatâs been whispering, âSomethingâs not rightâ? Yeah. That voice usually knows whatâs up. Shannon shared how she knewâbefore she really knewâthat it was time to move on. Even when everything looked âfine,â her gut was saying otherwise. And trusting that instinct, even when it didnât fully make sense, was the beginning of everything shifting for her. So if youâve been feeling low-key anxious or stuck lately, maybe take a second to tune in. Your body and brain are a lot wiser than we give them credit for. đŹ Itâs Not Just the JobâItâs the People Another thing we got into? Work culture. Because letâs be honestâyour job title and salary could be great, but if your team is draining or the vibes are off? That impacts your day-to-day. We talked about how much it matters to feel safe, supported, and seen at workâand how sometimes itâs not the job that needs to change, itâs the environment. đ Redefining Ambition (You Donât Have to Be âClimbingâ) This part hit home: Georgia has been in the same role for a while now, and guess what? Thatâs totally okay. Weâve been conditioned to believe ambition always means chasing more. More titles, more money, more hustle. But what if ambition could also mean staying in a role that aligns with your values, gives you breathing room, and lets you live your life? Youâre allowed to define success on your terms. đĄFeeling Lost? Same. And Itâs Okay. If you're thinking, âCool, but I have no clue what I actually want to doââyouâre not broken. Youâre just in the middle of figuring it out. Sometimes thereâs no clear plan, just curiosity. And thatâs more than enough to start. Try something. Mess it up. Start again. Youâre learning as you goâjust like the rest of us. Absolutely! Hereâs a blog segment version of your textâformatted cleanly, with a warm, conversational tone thatâs still reflective and thoughtful. It fits perfectly into a blog post about career transitions, self-discovery, or intentional living: âïž A Journaling Prompt That Changed My Perspective One of the most helpful exercises Georgiaâs done recently came from a simple journal prompt: âWhat would your everyday look like if bills werenât an issue?â Like, hypothetically, if money wasnât a factorâif you didnât have to earn a certain amount to surviveâ * What would you be doing with your time? * Who would you spend your days with? * Where would you live? * How would you feel when you woke up in the morning? It sounds basic, but sitting down and really writing it all out was surprisingly powerful. It helped me uncover what I truly valueânot just what I think I âshouldâ value. It gave me insight into what I want more of in my life right now, even with the realities of work and bills and adulting. And honestly? It was kind of validating. As I answered those questions, I realized⊠I'm already doing a lot of the things I imagined in that "ideal" version of my life. Maybe not perfectly or all at once, but stillâit was a reminder that Iâm not as far off as I thought. Sometimes, we just need to pause and ask ourselves: Am I already closer to the life I want than I realize? And no, itâs not a test. Youâre not trying to âget it right.â Itâs just about being honest with yourselfâand maybe giving yourself credit for how far you've already come. đ 3 Get It Together Book Recs That Shifted How I Think About Life + Work If you're in a bit of a âwhat am I doing with my life?â phase (hi, same), these books are for you. Each one offers something different 1. Manâs Search for Meaning â Viktor E. Frankl A powerful reminder that even in the hardest circumstances, we still get to choose our response. Deep, grounding, and honestly kind of life-changing if youâre feeling lost or questioning your âwhy.â 2. Ikigai â HĂ©ctor GarcĂa & Francesc Miralles This book is like a warm hug from Japan. It explores how to find your purposeâthe thing that makes you want to get out of bed in the morning. Simple, beautiful, and a must-read if youâre rethinking your career or lifestyle. 3. The Invisible Load â Dr. Libby Weaver This oneâs a must-read for women who feel weighed down but canât always put their finger on why. Itâs packed with science-backed insights and practical tools to help lighten that weight and reclaim your energy without having to overhaul your whole life. đ« Embrace Your Boundaries, Babe Okay, letâs be real: how many times have you said âyesâ when you really wanted to say ânoâ? đâïž Weâve all been thereâovercommitting, overgiving, and totally over ourselves in the process. Hi! Weâre Georgia and Shannon, your go-to gals for real talk, deep chats, and the occasional boundary rant. Today, weâre diving into something we need to hear (again and again): setting boundaries isnât selfishâitâs essential. What Even Are Boundaries? The word âboundariesâ can sound a little... vague, right? Like, okay, cool, but what are they? Think of them as invisible lines that protect your time, energy, and emotional space. Boundaries say: ââI care about you, but I wonât sacrifice my well-being to keep the peace.â Weâve both been on a whole journey with thisâshoutout to therapy and years of growth! One big aha moment? Setting boundaries doesnât push people away; it actually brings the right ones closer. Breaking Up with People-Pleasing Ugh, the people-pleaser life. Itâs exhausting, isnât it? We both used to think saying ânoâ made us rude, ungrateful, or (our personal favourite) difficult. But the truth? People-pleasing often means abandoning our own needsâand thatâs not cute. Once we started paying attention to why we felt guilty setting boundaries, it became way easier to change that pattern. Spoiler alert: itâs a lifelong practice, but sooo worth it. So, How Do You Actually Start Setting Boundaries? Here are a few things weâve learned that helped us: đĄ Check in with your body. Ever get a weird pit in your stomach when you say yes to something you donât want to do? Thatâs your body telling you somethingâs off. Start noticing where you feel safe and where you feel drained. đĄ Not every ânoâ leads to drama. A lot of the time, we think setting a boundary will cause conflictâbut it doesnât. đĄ Feel the awkward. Ride it out. Yes, itâs uncomfortable at first. But the more you sit with that discomfort, the stronger youâll get at holding your ground. đĄ Speak your truthânicely. You can be direct and kind. Try, âIâm not available for that right now,â or âThat doesnât work for me.â No need to explain yourself into oblivion. đĄ Set those boundaries IRL.. You can use your tone and body language to make sure your message lands right. Texts can easily be misunderstood, so having the convo face-to-face shows youâre serious about respecting yourself and the relationship. Love Without Losing Yourself Hereâs the big takeaway: love isnât just about partners or romantic drama. Some of our most soul-filling love comes from besties, chosen family, andâsurpriseâourselves. When you have solid boundaries, you attract healthier connections across the board. No more shrinking, bending, or breaking for people who donât meet you where youâre at. Final Thoughts (and a Pep Talk) So hereâs your permission slip: start protecting your peace, sis. Say no when you need to. Choose you. Youâre not âtoo muchâ or âcoldâ for setting boundariesâyouâre just growing. Youâre allowed to take up space. Youâre allowed to need rest. And youâre 100% allowed to walk away from anything that drains your joy. Thanks for hanging out with us on this boundary-setting adventure đ«If this episode hit home, maybe take a moment to check in with yourselfâwhatâs one boundary youâve been wanting to set? Or text your bestie and share this episode to spark a convo about protecting your peace (because we all need that reminder). Trying New Hobbies and Getting Out of Our Comfort Zones (Without Totally Freaking Out)
Okay, real talkâhave you ever wanted to try something new as an adult but immediately talked yourself out of it? Like, who do I think I am taking up pottery/dance/Brazilian jujitsu at this big age? Same. You are so not alone. This week, Iâve been thinking (and chatting) about the whole idea of trying new things and how stepping out of your comfort zone is... well, way easier said than done. Our Journey with New Hobbies (a.k.a. Flailing Around in a Fun Way) Let me tell youâstarting something from scratch as an adult is kind of terrifying but also kind of amazing. Georgia (my co-host and fellow hobby-hopper) recently got into Brazilian jujitsu, and she was super nervous at first. But once she actually gave it a shot, she realized she didnât need to be a black belt on day one. It was more about showing up and learning something new. Meanwhile, Iâve tried to channel my inner backup dancer and hit a few dance classesâand letâs just say the mirror wasnât always kind, but the laughs were totally worth it. Sometimes it's less about "nailing it" and more about the joy of doing something just because. Why Is Starting Something New So Scary? Letâs be realâtrying new things can bring up all kinds of weird insecurities we thought we left behind in high school. Thereâs that annoying voice in our heads saying we need to be instantly good at everything or else we shouldnât even try. Georgia put it perfectly: as adults, we get so caught up in appearing competent that weâd rather not try at all than risk looking awkward. And donât even get me started on the labels we picked up growing upâlike ânot sportyâ or âbad at art.â Itâs wild how those little comments can sneak into our adult brains and stop us from exploring things that might actually bring us joy. So⊠How Do You Even Start? Hereâs whatâs been helping me: I start small. I ask dumb questions. I let myself be bad at stuff. Honestly, itâs so freeing. Itâs not about becoming a pro; itâs about having a good time, learning something new, and letting yourself be a beginner again. Georgia and I both agreeâfear is often just a sign that you care. And thatâs a beautiful thing. It means youâre alive, curious, and growing. Letâs Keep It Light, Shall We? At the end of the day, trying new things shouldnât feel like a chore or a test. Itâs meant to be fun. Whether you totally fall in love with a hobby or just walk away with a funny story, itâs always worth it. Thanks for hanging out with us on this little journey. If youâre feeling inspired, maybe text that friend whoâs been wanting to try something new and plan to do it together. And if you loved this convo, give us a follow over on Insta: @GetItTogether_Pod (https://www.instagram.com/GetItTogether_Pod) đ Because honestly? Lifeâs too short to stay in your comfort zone. âȘ stream cafe - boba date link: youtu.be/kj1MDJXJ7-I (https://youtu.be/kj1MDJXJ7-I) This is a public episode. You've Got Time - Part 1
Ep 1 is here! We chat about how you're not running out of time (we promise) and the link between productivity and self worth. We're tackling that all-too-familiar feeling that you're running out of time. We also chat about the link between productivity and self-worth. Spoiler: Your self-esteem shouldn't be tied to how productive you are (despite what society tries to tell us). Why Your Worth Isnât Bound by the Clock Georgia and Shannon kick off by breaking down this whole ârunning out of timeâ myth. Let's be realâit's easy to feel like social media is pushing you to have your life together pronto. But guess what? Thatâs a total myth. Remember being a kid and feeling like you needed to discover your life's purpose, like, yesterday? Shannon totally relates, having felt that pressure at eight years old. But through our chat, Shannon and Georgia let their younger selves know that itâs perfectly okay not to have it all mapped out. Letâs Talk Being Present Our girl Shannon brings some awesome advice on staying rooted in the now and practicing gratitude. Seriously, itâs a game-changer. Forget the fear of failing; it's all about trying your best today and letting tomorrow worry about itself. Quick Tips for Loving the Moment Youâre In Celebrate the Little Stuff: Start small and see where it takes you. Whether it's acting in a TV series or taking up surfing - you never know until you give it a go. Be Your Own Cheerleader: Being kind to yourself - Easier said than done, right? Weâre big believers in recognizing your progress and being patient with yourself. Youâre doing amazing, sweetie! Face Your Fears: Shannon throws in this neat concept called reality checking. Itâs all about assessing your worries and finding out the worst that could realistically happen if you take the plunge. More often than not, the reality is a whole lot nicer than those scary "what ifs." Whatâs Next? If you're feeling stuck with a million choices and no idea where to start, take a breath. Remember, taking that first step creates its own momentum. Next time that inner voice starts stressing you out with timelines, remember there's no rush. Your journey is yours, and it's just getting started.
