The History of the English Language
<p>Welcome to the first episode of Get Smarter with English! Today's episode is about the history of the English language. Join us for a discussion about the timeline of the development of English, some fun facts about the language, and this week's interesting news.</p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>Vocabulary used:</strong></p> <p>well-versed (adj.): Having a lot of knowledge about something. Example: He is well-versed in the history of England.</p> <p>pillage (v): 1. To rob a place using violence. Example: The Vikings pillaged many towns. 2. To steal something using violence. Example: The gallery was robbed and art was pillaged.</p> <p>fungible (adj.): Easily replaceable with something identical. Example: We should eat five servings of fruit and vegetables everyday. It doesn't matter whether you eat fruits or vegetables or both - they are fungible.</p> <p>globalisation(UK)/globalization(US) (n): The increasing interconnectedness of the world. The process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale.
