Clint Eastwood's SUDDEN IMPACT (1983): Does Dirty Harry's Darkest Chapter Still Hold Up?

SUDDEN IMPACT (1983). Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry returns. Go ahead. Make my day. Forty-three years on, the question is: does it hold up? Matt and Malcolm dig into Sudden Impact for Get To The Chedda!: the fourth Dirty Harry film, the one Eastwood directed himself, and the chapter that gave the character his most famous line. Clint Eastwood as Inspector Harry Callahan, pulled from San Francisco heat into a coastal town where a revenge trail is already running hot. Sondra Locke as Jennifer Spencer. Pat Hingle as Captain Jannings. Bradford Dillman in the local power seat. Harry does what Harry does. The town does not know what it invited in. We track Callahan's place in the Dirty Harry run, the shift from San Francisco procedure to small-town rot, Locke's parallel path through the story, the line that left the film and entered the language, Eastwood as star and director at full authority, Lalo Schifrin's pulse under the menace, and the verdict every Get To The Chedda! has to deliver: what Chedda Rating does Sudden Impact earn in 2026? BEST OF THE BEST (1989) Eric Roberts and the Tournament Movie Hollywood Didn't Expect Chuck Liddell to Love

Best of the Best (1989) is the tournament film Eric Roberts, James Earl Jones and Phillip Rhee built when Hollywood thought the karate boom was already over. Chuck Liddell later called it his favourite martial arts movie. The video store already knew. Directed by Bob Radler. Produced by Phillip Rhee and Peter E. Strauss. Written by Paul Levine from a story by Phillip Rhee and Paul Levine. Alex Grady (Eric Roberts) is a Portland welder and widowed father pulled back onto the US team with a body that should have said no. The shoulder is part of the story, not a footnote. Coach Frank Couzo (James Earl Jones) has to turn five mismatched fighters into one unit before they face South Korea in Seoul. Tommy Lee (Phillip Rhee) is carrying more than a title fight. Travis Brickley (Chris Penn) brings the fuse. Catherine Wade (Sally Kirkland) brings a second coaching voice Couzo does not want. Simon Rhee plays Dae Han Park. Louise Fletcher, John Dye, David Agresta, John P. Ryan and Tom Everett round out the company. Shot in Los Angeles and Seoul in early 1989. Released 10 November 1989 by Taurus Entertainment. About $5 million in, $14.1 million out, then three sequels. Critics were cold. Fighters were not. Matt and Malcolm get to the Chedda on the training camp, the Seoul tournament, the Rhee brothers, Roberts working through that shoulder, and why this one still plays as a team drama that just happens to kick. ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981): 45 Years On, Does Snake Plissken Still Hold Up?

Snake Plissken has 24 hours to save the President, and Malcolm and I have one question: does Escape From New York (1981) still hold up 45 years on? This is Get To The Chedda!, the retro action podcast where we drop a classic in the pit and give it the Chedda Rating. John Carpenter's low-budget dystopian thriller turned Kurt Russell from a Disney child star into a hard-edged action icon, gave us one of cinema's great antiheroes, and built a grimy vision of a walled-off Manhattan penal colony on a fraction of a studio budget. Alongside Russell, the cast is stacked: Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence, Isaac Hayes and Harry Dean Stanton. But does the pacing, the practical effects and the Snake Plissken myth survive a modern rewatch, or has time caught up with it? We break down the making of the film, Carpenter's fight to get it made, the score, the effects, and whether the whole thing earns its cult reputation today. Then we give it the rating that matters. Screen One is the definitive UK voice on 80s and 90s cinema. Without the noise. Subscribe and join the Video Store Society for more Essential Cinema every week. Schwarzenegger's RAW DEAL (1986): 40 Years Later, Is This the Arnie Film They Buried?

RAW DEAL (1986) — Schwarzenegger goes undercover. The mob doesn't see it coming. Forty years on, the question is: does it hold up?Matt and Malcolm dig into John Irvin's crime thriller — the one where Arnie trades the jungle and the battlefield for the Chicago mob. Arnold Schwarzenegger as disgraced former FBI man Mark Kaminsky, dragged back in by his old boss Harry Shannon (Darren McGavin) to take down the Patrovita crime family from the inside under the alias Joseph P. Brenner. A cast built for damage: Kathryn Harrold as the sharp and complicated Monique, Sam Wanamaker as mob boss Luigi Patrovita, Paul Shenar as the calculating Rocca, and Robert Davi doing what Robert Davi does — maximum threat, minimum words. We track Kaminsky's dead-end sheriff exile, Shannon's ask and the loyalty debt behind it, the cold construction of a new identity, the slow infiltration, the burn before the detonation, and the quarry scene: Rolling Stones on the soundtrack, Arnie behind the wheel, one of the most purely cathartic moments in his entire filmography. The De Laurentiis production machine, John Irvin's direction, the film's complicated place in the Schwarzenegger catalogue, what it tried to do differently, and the verdict every GTTC has to deliver: What Chedda Rating does Raw Deal earn in 2026?Full Get To The Chedda! Van Damme's NO RETREAT NO SURRENDER: Villain for a Weekend — Legend for a Lifetime!

No Retreat No Surrender (1986) He had no billing. He had almost no lines. He stole the entire film.Matt and Malcolm dig into Corey Yuen's scrappy, electrifying 1986 martial arts sleeper, one of the great 80s movies you've never given enough credit — and the film that put Jean-Claude Van Damme on the radar a full two years before Bloodsport made him a household name. Jason Stillwell's underdog journey, the ghost of Bruce Lee as a spirit mentor, and the Soviet enforcer Ivan: the villain role JCVD was born to play.We track the underdog training arc, the ghost mentorship, the small-town rivalry, and the tournament showdown. But the real story is what Van Damme does with Ivan — maximum menace, minimum dialogue, zero wasted movement. And we've got something the algorithm will love! We're featuring the deleted scene of Jason and Kelly on a date in Seattle, cut from the final release and rarely discussed. If you've only ever seen the theatrical cut, this one's for you. The debut of a man who didn't need a leading role to announce himself to the world. 40 years on, does it hold? The Chedda Rating decides. Chuck Norris THE DELTA FORCE (1986) The Cannon Masterpiece Chuck Almost Ruined

Is The Delta Force actually Chuck Norris’s best film… or is he the least interesting part of it? In this episode of Get To The Chedda!, we break down one of the most bizarre success stories of 80s action cinema. A film that feels like two completely different movies stitched together: part 70s-style disaster thriller, part full-blown Cannon Films spectacle. Along the way, we dig into a stacked supporting cast led by Lee Marvin in his final performance, alongside Martin Balsam and the ever-reliable Steve James, who quietly steals the entire film. We also put forward Matt's theory: why Executive Decision might be The Delta Force done properly, and how the 90s evolved the Cannon blueprint in ways this film never quite managed. This is a deep dive into an accidental classic. One that somehow survives tonal whiplash, questionable logic, and yes… a rocket-launching dirt bike. Christopher Lambert's HIGHLANDER: Immortals, The Quickening, Queen Anthems & The Kurgan Unleashed!

Highlander (1986) — There can be only one… but the craft is in the details. Matt and Malcolm dig into Russell Mulcahy's neon-gothic sword opera: Christopher Lambert's haunted Connor MacLeod, Sean Connery's swaggering mentor Ramirez, and Clancy Brown's all-timer villain turn as The Kurgan. We track the Highland clan battles and exile, the training and rules of immortality, the Heather romance and the cost of forever, the New York duels and parking-lot sparks, the church face-off dread, and the rooftop final fight for the Prize. Queen's power ("Princes of the Universe," "Who Wants to Live Forever"), music-video kinetics, gritty location work, ringing steel and lightning FX get the microscope. Marked For Death (1990) Steven Seagal’s Meanest Breaks?

Steven Seagal was unstoppable in the early 90s — and Marked for Death might be the purest example of that era. This week, we break down Seagal’s third action outing and one of the wildest films of his career. From bone-snapping aikido and whisper-threat dialogue to voodoo gangs, nightclub massacres, and the infamous Screwface twist, Marked for Death is confidence dialled up to dangerous levels. We dig into behind-the-scenes chaos, censored violence, bizarre creative decisions, and why this movie still hits harder than most modern action films. Expect deep-cut trivia, sharp observations, and plenty of laughs along the way. Is it ridiculous? Absolutely. Is it committed? Completely. Is it peak 90s action cinema? Without question. If you love old-school action, practical stunts, and movies that don’t explain themselves — this one’s for you.

It's a time before Charlie Sheen became the highest-paid TV actor in history—before the tiger blood and the goddesses—he starred in what should've been his Top Gun moment. Instead, Navy SEALs (1990) is a masterclass in wasted potential, questionable decisions, and possibly the worst jingoistic dialogue in action movie history.Matt Bourne and Malcolm Martin deliver a scorched earth, 1-hour deep dive into why this Michael Biehn and Charlie Sheen military thriller is everything wrong with trying to cash in on Top Gun's success. Robocop (1987)

"Dead or alive, you're coming with me." Welcome to Get To The Chedda!, the podcast where cult hits, action classics, and movie madness collide — and this week, we’re tearing through the bullet-riddled streets of futuristic Detroit with none other than RoboCop (1987). Directed by the master of cinematic chaos Paul Verhoeven, RoboCop wasn’t just another 80s action movie. It was a razor-sharp takedown of capitalism, corporate greed, media obsession, and the idea of justice in a world where the police are privatized and the human soul is commodified. In this week’s explosive episode, your host Matt (Screen One) breaks down why RoboCop is still one of the greatest movies of its kind — part Frankenstein, part Terminator, part network news. We explore the film's wild production stories, from Peter Weller almost quitting due to the infamously heavy suit, to Verhoeven's vision for violence as satire. We cover: The moral complexity of Murphy’s transformation. The genius of ED-209 and the office massacre that shocked a generation. Why this film is more relevant today than ever before. The unforgettable quotes, the blood-soaked practical effects, and how a film like this could never get made in today’s studio system. Plus: A rundown of sequels, spin-offs, cartoons (yep), and the ill-fated reboot that forgot the satire and leaned too clean. Whether you’ve seen RoboCop a hundred times or never at all, we’ll give you plenty of reasons to rewatch it tonight — with fresh eyes and maybe a bit of disbelief that it was ever released as a mainstream movie. So, grab your Auto-9, dodge ED-209, and get ready for the kind of analysis only Get To The Chedda! can bring. And remember... “I’d buy that for a dollar!”
