They Don't Understand What This Means For The Lakers

Brooklyn declined a team option worth $6.25 million, and a 24-year-old former top-ten pick hit the market for anybody willing to take a swing. The Lakers got Ziaire Williams on one year at three million, and my Pelicans pushed hard and lost him to a hometown zip code, so we can add that to the pile. I go through how a 10th pick out of Stanford ended up here, what Memphis was actually betting on, and why the Cam Reddish comparison is fair even if I think the swing was right both times. Then the defensive numbers, where B-Ball Index has him graded as a genuine passing-lane menace among wing stoppers while the rim protection sits at the bottom of the scale, which is exactly what Walker Kessler is for. The bigger thing is what the roster is turning into. Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton, Williams, Cam Carr, Adou Thiero, and a front office still chasing Jonathan Kuminga and Matisse Thybulle after everybody assumed the Williams deal closed those doors. A team that ranked 22nd in pace last season is now built to run, and it is running without the guy who led the league in fast-break scoring. So is Pelinka actually building something around Luka here, or is this just a lot of upside stacked on top of upside until somebody has to prove it? Learn more about your ad choices. The Lakers Can't Keep Getting Away With Stuff Like This

The Lakers sat at 25, the Knicks were willing to move 24 for cash, and Los Angeles refused to gamble on Cameron Carr lasting one more pick. I get into why that was the right call, why a Western Conference scout told Brett Siegel the whole thing made no sense, and how a guard who walked out on a number one Tennessee team in the middle of December turned into a first-rounder eighteen months later. Carr led Baylor at nearly 19 a night while shooting 37 percent from three on six attempts a game, and at the combine he measured 6'4.5" barefoot with a wingspan just past 7'0.75" and a 42.5" max vertical that ranked second in the entire class. The tape backs it up, the Summer League reads are already there, and the defensive tools might be what keeps him on the floor for JJ Redick. Then there is the other side of it. Pelinka's last five draft additions before this one were Thiero, Bronny, Knecht, Maxwell Lewis, and Jalen Hood-Schifino, and a team without a tradable first for seven years cannot afford to keep whiffing. So which is it, did the Lakers finally hit on a lottery talent who slid, or is Carr about to become one more name on a list that says Pelinka just cannot draft? Learn more about your ad choices. The Lakers Have No Idea What They've Done

The Lakers finally got Luka his center, and the bill came due the same day. Two unprotected firsts in 2031 and 2033, swaps in 2028 and 2030, and a four-year, $130 million contract made Walker Kessler the anchor of Los Angeles's next era, and the fallout left the franchise without a tradable first for seven years and roughly $475 million committed to three players. Danny Ainge cashed in on Utah's leverage again, LeBron James walked out the door while the front office chased a big man, and Anthony Davis sat back and laughed at every post about it. I get into why the fit next to Luka is as clean as it looks, what Kessler was doing in Utah on scraps from a young backcourt, and why the debt still makes this whole thing scary. Was an A-list center worth losing LeBron and emptying the draft drawer, or did Pelinka just find a smarter-looking way to run out of options? Learn more about your ad choices. LeBron James Wasn't Messing Around

Austin Reaves agreed to four years and 185 million dollars, the richest deal an undrafted player has ever signed, and the guy it might've cost the most has four rings. We get into how the Lakers went from lowballing him around 30 million a year to clearing 45 once Detroit got interested, and why Bobby Marks says none of it touches their flexibility. Which leaves LeBron. Shams described one check-in call after the Finals and silence since, with the front office sorting out roughly 50 million in space before it circles back to him. We run through the three doors that opened up: a Cleveland sign-and-trade built around Jarrett Allen, Miami as the reunion Pat Riley probably isn't turning down, and Golden State, where Draymond just declined 27.7 million to make room for LeBron and an Anthony Davis trade. So where do you land? Is LeBron staying in L.A. because you don't blow up the most stable situation of your life at 41, or did the Lakers wait long enough that Rich Paul gets to pick the ending? The Miami Heat Already Have A Huge Problem

Pat Riley spent four years attached to every star on the market without landing one, and then he landed the biggest one of all. Giannis Antetokounmpo is a member of the Miami Heat. We walk through what it cost: Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis, the No. 13 pick, unprotected firsts in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 swap, and a 2033 second. We get into why Spoelstra never fully trusted Ware, the reporting that suggested Riley was never going to pay Herro, and why Jaquez might be the guy who makes Miami regret this. On the other side, Milwaukee's haul is getting more hate than it deserves. Brayden Burries and Nate Ament join a backcourt with Ryan Rollins, who put up 17.3 points, 5.6 assists, and 4.6 rebounds on 47.2 percent from the field in a lost season. There's a Melo-to-New-York blueprint hiding in this thing. And then the part nobody wants to say out loud: Giannis played 36 games last year at soon-to-be 32, Norman Powell is likely gone, and a Giannis-Bam frontcourt is terrifying on paper in a league where depth decides everything. Bucks fans, after everything that went down leading up to this: was the Giannis era worth how it ended, and would you have rather taken the Jaylen Brown package? Learn more about your ad choices. It's Finally Starting With Joel Embiid

Earlier this season I dropped "Joel Embiid Is In Trouble" — and the comments told me my take was aging like milk in the sun. So let's revisit it. After an emergency appendectomy, a 3-1 comeback against the Celtics, and a hard-fought playoff run that ended with a sweep at the hands of the Knicks, Joel Embiid walked away from this postseason saying something nobody in Philly wants to hear: "I don't even know if I'm going to be here." In this one I break down Embiid's playoff run, why the Knicks and Karl-Anthony Towns were such a brutal matchup for a less explosive version of The Process, what his comments about his future actually mean, and whether the Sixers are quietly ready to hand the franchise over to VJ Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey. Plus: the Daryl Morey firing, Bob Myers walking into a mess, the $192M contract question, and why I just want to see Embiid get his ring, wherever that ends up being. This Has To Stop Happening With Austin Reaves

The Lakers shocked the world taking down the Rockets, and the locker room was literally making GOAT noises for a 41-year-old LeBron James. But Game 1 against the Thunder exposed exactly what we feared: when LeBron's co-star can't get going, even a vintage Bron night isn't enough. We break down LeBron's absurd Game 1 performance, why Austin Reaves turned in maybe the worst game of his career, the Lu Dort foul-hunting problem, and whether bad playoff Reaves is an outlier or a preview of what's coming. We Have To Talk About Austin Reaves

Up 3-0 with a 41-year-old LeBron defying time and Luke Kennard filling in beautifully, the Lakers looked like they were closing this series out. Then Game 4 happened, the Rockets started trolling, Jabari Smith and Sengün started talking, and Austin Reaves came back from his oblique injury to a Game 5 that went sideways fast. We break down Reaves' rusty 4-of-16 return, LeBron's 0-for-6 night from three, the questionable shot selection, the chaotic 4-on-1 transition possession that sums up the whole game, and what's left in the tank with the Thunder waiting. Plus: why a few bad games don't change the case for Reaves. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This Looks Bad For Kevin Durant

Kevin Durant was supposed to be Houston's final piece. Instead, the Rockets are scrambling. We break down KD's brutal playoff debut against a depleted Lakers squad, the nine turnovers that flipped Game 2, the ankle injury and "quit on another team" rumors, and why Houston's refusal to grab a veteran point guard at the deadline may have doomed this experiment before it started. Luke Kennard Is Better Than You Think

You don't always need to swing for the fences at the trade deadline. Sometimes the smaller move is the one that completes the roster, think Trevor Ariza in 2009, JR Smith in 2015, PJ Tucker in 2021. For the Lakers this season, that move was Luke Kennard, and all it cost was Gabe Vincent and a 2032 second. We break down how the active career leader in three-point percentage has grown into something more than just a stand-still shooter. With Luka and Reaves out, Kennard dropped his first career triple-double, then went for 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting in Game 1 against the Rockets, torching one of the league's best perimeter defenders in Amen Thompson, who owned up to it after the game. JJ Redick told him to stop passing up looks. He listened. Now the Lakers have exactly the floor-spacer they were missing, and maybe a little more. Learn more about your ad choices. The Bronny James Hate Has Gone Too Far

For two years, the Bronny discourse was about everything except basketball. The last name. The nepotism debate. What the NBA owes anybody. Now at 21, he's quietly making it harder to dismiss him, capped by a historic first-ever LeBron-to-Bronny assist. We break down the real growth: G-League dominance (56% from the field, plus-minus jumping from +1.2 to +8.1), 38% from deep in limited NBA minutes, and why his archetype, a guard who can defend and shoot is exactly what teams want next to stars like LeBron and Luka. Think Marcus Smart, who's quietly leading the Lakers in net rating right now. Has Bronny already proven he belongs? Tap in. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This Moment Told Us Everything About Cam Thomas' Future

Six weeks. Two teams. One brutal reality check. Brooklyn waived him. Milwaukee signed him, Doc Rivers compared him to Lou Williams and Jamal Crawford, and he dropped 34 in his second game. Then the Bucks cut him too. We break down how a 24-points-per-game scorer turned down $30 million and ended up unemployed, and why the league is quietly phasing out his entire archetype. Draymond said it. Jordan Poole is living it. Trae Young got moved for it. Even Luka caught heat for it. Is Cam refusing to adjust, or has the NBA moved on from undersized scorers who don't defend? The Bucks Wanted To Send Giannis Home

Giannis said two words after a recent game "I don't know" and they may have just sealed the Bucks' fate. We break down the latest chapter of the Giannis saga: the dysfunction in Milwaukee's ownership, why the trade deadline came and went without a real swing, the reported shutdown standoff, and the teams already lining up for what's shaping up to be the biggest trade of the summer. Plus, why a Lakers deal might create more problems than it solves, and what Milwaukee actually needs to get back to make this work. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The 76ers Have Made A Horrible Mistake

Daryl Morey called the Jared McCain trade "selling high" and said McCain was more likely to help a team "in the future." The problem? That future team is the reigning champs, currently sitting on the best record in the league, and McCain is already closing games for them. We break down how Sam Presti played 4D chess on this one — landing a 22-year-old creator on a rookie deal to fix OKC's biggest weakness, while keeping the 76ers' own first-round pick from a 2020 deal that Morey could've demanded back. Meanwhile, McCain's numbers have jumped across the board in OKC: 11.8 points on 47.5% shooting and 43.3% from three, with the off-ball movement of a Steph Curry student finally getting to breathe. With Embiid hurt, George suspended, and Maxey banged up, Philly could really use him right about now. Did Morey pull the trigger too early? Learn more about your ad choices. This Is Why The Warriors Took The Risk

The Draymond who anchored a dynasty, four rings, a DPOY, the greatest single-season plus-minus in NBA history, was worth every ounce of chaos. That's not the player suiting up now, and with Steph sidelined, the cracks are impossible to ignore. We break down the February 22nd win over Jokić and the Nuggets without Draymond, the Pelicans loss where New Orleans straight-up refused to guard him, and the bigger question: why do the rules seem different for Draymond in Golden State? From the Kerr blow-up to his reported pull on roster moves, the accountability gap might be a bigger problem than his shot. Is it fixable before the playoffs? Or are the Warriors making their own bed? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Charlotte Hornets Are Onto Something

LaMelo Ball was supposed to be “highlights over hardware.” Instead, he’s got Charlotte looking like a real problem. In this episode, we break down how the Hornets finally found structure around Melo, why the “unserious” narrative is fading, how Kon Knueppel and Brandon Miller change the offense, and why this young core is starting to feel legit. The Anthony Davis Situation Is Wild

Anthony Davis’ trade situation just took another wild turn, and the timeline got way messier than it looked a week ago. AD shows up at shootaround with the sling, the “season-ending surgery” report hits, and then AD himself basically says not so fast, Shams circles back with the real update and the trade talks heat back up. In this episode, we break down what the injury update actually changes, why teams still might talk themselves into the AD gamble, and why the Raptors and Hawks keep coming up as the loudest names in the mix. Is AD a risky rental… or the exact kind of move that flips a team into a playoff problem? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
