What is The Magician's Trick?

The whole point of this short series of podcasts is to establish how we may be able to help researchers get more men involved in healthcare.

From our small group of four guys who were present when recording this podcast, it seems universally agreed that currently, men may need a slight distraction to get them involved. Over the longer term, relationships need to be improved so that men feel it is normal to want to engage in research, or quite simply, go to the doctors.

Whether it's by Distraction, a side-by-side technique or longer term engagement, men don't get involved because they don't want to, they likely assume that this stuff just takes care of itself.

Many men are seeking help with various different aspects of their lives. One theory is that they don't know where to look to find most things, because privilege has brought it to them in the past.

But relationships need to be built and men engaged in this kind of work, or we're simply going to see the increase in figures relating to illness and ultimately the death of more men!

Do I build you a roof or give you an umbrella?

During this episode, we ask the question "Why don’t men want to go to the doctors?"

There are Physical Barriers as well as Internal Barriers too. The Healthcare system is not set up for men, and that's something we have to realise. Men will often leave ‘an issue’ until the last minute and then want it dealt with immediately. That's also not how the healthcare system works.

To get men to engage with research and the healthcare system, we need to incentivise and recruit them. Better tools and better ways to do research to make it more appealing and easier are required.

We also discuss Role Models in this episode, and that's not just sportsmen and sportswomen!
