Although educators of color are heavily recruited to diversify classrooms, the numbers tell a different story — one of burnout, betrayal, and systemic exclusion. National data shows that while Black and Latinx educators make up less than 20% of the workforce in many districts, they’re leaving at disproportionate rates — often within the first 3 to 5 years.
Why? Because recruitment without retention is performative. And “diversity” without real support, leadership pathways, or protection becomes just another pipeline to pain.
