Hair Accessories on My Blacklist (and Some Must-haves)

A Bucketful of Hair Accessories

Traction alopecia can be caused by overly tight hairstyles like high buns and ponytails. But it’s also the fault of certain hair accessories. In this episode, I detail my hair accessories blacklist.

My lifelong obsession with hair accessories might have stemmed from the little packets of Goody hair bands I came across as a child in supermarkets. I think it was the colors that first attracted me—and when I was allowed to grow out my hair at the age of nine, I got my first packet of these hair elastics. By the time I was ten, scrunchies were in vogue—this was the nineties. The Goody hair elastics were no longer as enticing as the fabric covered hair ties nearly everyone I knew wore. Large poofy, small, medium…scrunchies came in all sizes. My hair was fairly thin then, so I would wear small or medium scrunchies—the larger ones tended to slip right off, especially during sports.

Anyway, I’ve detailed here my list of hair accessories I would never recommend plus some personal favorites. Hope this helps!

My hair accessories blacklist

1. Barrettes

2. Hair sliders

3. Bobby bins

4. Headbands

5. Hair Loss Causes

What Causes Hair Loss? —Haircare Masterclass Exclusive with Dr.TWL®

Hair loss (alopecia) can be a major source of distress and is a common problem. In this masterclass exclusive, understand:

The Hair Cycle

The growth phase, or anagen phase, catagen phase, the hair bulb detaches from the blood supply and is pushed from the scalp. In the last stage, the telogen phase, shedding occurs as the hair is released, leaving behind an empty follicle.

Hair problems occur when there is a disruption in the hair cycle

What Is Hair Loss?

Hair loss also known medically as alopecia can be defined by shedding of hair, leading to an overall thinning that causes the scalp to be visible, or "balding".

Is my hair loss normal?

Significant ethnic variation in hair follicle density, so loss of 100 hairs per day may be “normal” for those with naturally thick hair. On the other hand, individuals with less hair, may find that normal ranges from 30-50 strands instead.

How do dermatologists diagnose alopecia?

There are two major forms of hair loss – scarring or non-scarring alopecia.

What are the causes of hair loss?

Hair loss can be caused either by an isolated problem or a combination of factors including genetics, chronic medical diseases such as a thyroid problem or underlying anemia (low blood count), poor nutrition, etc.

Chemical treatments performed in hair salons, such as hair dyes, bleaching, perming and rebonding hair, can cause a form of hair loss from breakage of the hair shaft.

Hormones, abnormally high levels of male hormones in females.

Genes, from both parents in male or female pattern baldness.

Childbirth, emotional stress, illness — these are causes of temporary/reversible hair loss known as telogen effluvium

Fungal infections such as Ringworm, Tinea capitis caused by dermatophyte infections i.e. microsporum canis and trichophyton rubrum.

Telogen effluvium is a temporary, reversible reaction to stressors such as an acute severe illness or to pregnancy or emotional/psychological trauma. This is due to changes in the growth cycle of hair. A proportionately increased number of hairs enter the resting phase known as telogen at the same time, as opposed to normal hair which forms 90% of scalp hair in the active growth phase, causing increased hair shedding and subsequent thinning.

Tight hairstyles and using instruments like rollers or hot curlers. Tightly braided hair and hot combs can also result in permanent hair loss by trauma.

Anemia, thyroid illnesses, autoimmune diseases such as lupus, diabetes, iron deficiency and eating disorders can lead to hair loss.

If you enjoyed this podcast, do leave a 5-star review on Apple and Spotify so the Podcast can be heard by more people! Self-care for Girls With Long Hair

What does self- care mean to you? For me, self-care encompasses— well for lack of a better word. Rituals. But sometimes rituals get obsessive, you know it when the whites of your knuckles begin to show. This episode sheds light on how self-care can go against the self and will also teach you how to give up control.

If you enjoyed this podcast, do leave a 5-star review on Apple and Spotify so the Podcast can be heard by more people!
