About Glad You Asked

Welcome to Glad You Asked, a show about how active listening can help you build stronger connections with folks in your life, personally and professionally. I’m Martha Schumacher and I’ve spent my career asking leaders, funders, donors, and community members thoughtful questions to help find the real reasons behind why they do what they do. And when you pursue these deeper connections, you ultimately arrive at the heart of what really matters: establishing trust. On each episode of Glad You Asked, we’ll explore three questions, one from our guest, one from a listener, and one from me. During a conversation with mission-driven leaders, we’ll test how each question, each compelling prompt, makes active listening possible and deepens our relationships. Afterwards, we’ll take a look at how effective our questions were in guiding a meaningful conversation, and leave you with a call to action, so you can use these questions in your own work and life.

   What does support truly look like? Martha and her guest, Tycely Williams, CEO for Liberty Fellowship, discuss the idea of support within the nonprofit sector as well as everyday life. The two also explore how self-awareness is essential for leaders and managers, especially knowing when to step up and when to step back. Throughout, you’ll learn how Active Listening has been key to Tycely’s work around building just and equitable communities, sustaining educational institutions, and being the leader that she wants to see in the world. Join us for a powerful episode about confidence, thoughtfulness, reciprocity, kindness, and of course, improving communications. Ask yourself, “How would I like to be contacted?” Do you have lingering Whatsapp messages that you always forget to read? Do you have an inbox that’s so cluttered you don’t dare open it? Do you prefer talking on the phone to texting? Or is it a combination of multiple channels depending on the situation/circumstance? Take inventory of the many available contact methods and rank them based on what you find. Then, next time someone reaches out to you in your least favorite way for that particular situation, request that they pivot to one you prefer. They’ll be happy that they can get a hold of you easier, and you’ll be glad you asked.    Rusty Stahl - What is one thing I can do right now to help protect the nonprofit sector?

   Nneka Allen - What is the nature of the love you carry?

The ultimate goal of Active Listening is to build trust, and Nneka expertly explains how building trust is a stepping stone toward love. The two explore how understanding the way we each love, along with our core values, can help us to understand the different perspectives we each hold, to truly understand one another and build empathy.    Most nonprofit leaders struggle to articulate what truly makes them distinct.    AmickyCarol Akiwumi - How might we co-create the future you actually want?

   In this episode of ‘Glad You Asked’, Martha is joined by AmickyCarol Akiwumi, CEO and founder of The Avocado Foundation and host of the World Changers Podcast, to discuss co-creation, the importance of exit strategies and evolving needs, economic justice in the social impact sector, and much more. Amicky Carol shares her personal journey and confronts the difficult but necessary task of understanding when you’re no longer needed in a space, and having faith that there is a calling for each of us.
