This is How We Pray In a recent Live community practice, I shared a quote from Mary Oliver: “So this is how you swim inward.So this is how you flow outwards.So this is how you pray.” It felt like a perfect encapsulation for what we do together in circle and in our lives. There is a rhythm to a well-nourished life: a movement inward and a movement outward. Time alone and time in community. Reflection and expression. Receiving and offering. If we swim inward but never flow outward, we can become stagnant, over-contained, cut off from the life that wants to move through us. If we flow outward without ever swimming inward, we grow depleted, brittle, burned out by constant giving and doing. So in circle we practice both: Swimming inward, (breath, body, journaling, contemplating, noticing our own inner landscape), flowing outward (blessing one another, sharing stories, creating, writing, making things with our hands). This, too, is prayer: not only words, but in the ways we show up for our own lives and for each other.    Hearth Magic (and Embers for September)

   AStand steady and feel the earth turn. Remember, there are only two points of perfect balance in a spinning year. We create our own lives from countless threads. They will not be balanced. In fact,they may be rough or frayed,bright or golden, strong or thin. Here we are anyway. We can be centered in our own life's webno matter how it tilts. We can trust that as we hold these many threads they are also holding us. We feel the earth beneath us. We see the sky above us. We sense the elements around us and within us. Air in our lungs. Fire in our eyes. Water in our veins. Earth in our bones. We kiss our fingertips and bless our hearts, our hopes, our bellies. We hold our hands out,one to give and one to receive. Our lives are ripe with opportunity and rich with love. We are once more at this still point of change and choice where we celebrate what we've made and offer what we can. We give thanks. This was a core reminder from our live community practice earlier in the month and then I reminded people of the same thing again when I was doing a masterclass with Lucy and Sarah before Writing Nature and Magic begins on October 1 (https://womancraftpublishing.com/product-category/books/writing-nature-and-magic/).Devotion can look like incense and altar candles…but it can also look like washing dishes with awareness, taking meds on time, making tea and taking a deep breath, or stepping outside to feel the wind.You are a walking altar. Kingfisher flavor, this one is about an 11 year old girl who meets Baba Yaga and ends up in a magical world. In the time since I last wrote, I also finished reading Kingfisher’s Seventh Bride, which was pretty horribly creepy. About a 15 year old who is proposed to by a creepy lord and mysterious things unfold after she goes to his creepy, hidden mansion. I finished Swordheart too and I’m super chomping at the bit to read Daggerbound next, but it is still $15 on Kindle and isn’t out in paperback yet, and I’m not totally into that price point for a Kindle book, even though I loved Swordheart. (listening to by self) Yesteryear—surprise! This is NOT by T. Kingfisher, it is a popular book (that is becoming a movie, iirc?) about a “tradwife” influencer who finds herself actually transported back in time to the yesteryear she has built her career on emulating, but discovers there is a much more to it than photo staging and gingham aprons. I’m going to have to work really hard to finish listening to this because I was on the waiting list for ages and there are a lot of people on it after me, so I must commit to finish it, or I’ll have to wait forever to hear the rest. (listening to with Tanner) The Horse and His Boy—we also finished listening to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in the interim between newsletters. As previously noted, I could not resist getting the complete Chronicles of Narnia from Audible when I had a credit to use up before cancelling my membership. It is a single credit purchase for 33 hours and THE ENTIRE SERIES as one file. I’m finding the Christian allegories a lot more heavy-handed than I tuned into as a kid and, of course, I’m also annoyed by the “witch is evil” trope, which feels very tired. However, it remains fun to share it with at least one of my kids. September’s Allies: Hestia, Nettle, Nasturtium, Amethyst, and Fox Reminder: replenishment begins at the hearth—within yourself and your home—and then naturally extends outward into community. Affirmations I celebrate myself and others. I replenish and renew. I delight in my own expression I explore the depths. And so, today, under cloudy skies, surrounded by browning leavesand thirsty ground, we are invited yet againto tend, not force, to see what maiden ideas we can nourish as they tentatively sprout and grow from the spaces left in to-do lists and calendar squares.It is time to center and softeninto this season’s necessary magic, this time of gathering and releasing, reviewing and renewing, of holding on and letting go.    Embers (and Allies) for September

   And, so,gently, September slides into the year, bringing breaths of cool air,the first yellowing leaves,and welcome clarity as we review what we learned in the cauldron and emerge to once again commit to what we know to be true, choosing with trust,determination,and renewed purpose as we look at our lives, at the abundant possibility around us, and settle into the rhythm that nourishes us, that supports us as we both change and thrive. Let us savor the time spent being here in this season of power and plenty. September Thresholds Imagine standing at a doorway in your life, a threshold into a new season. By the door there’s a basket. You don’t have to abandon anything forever. You can simply set a few things down for now.It’s okay to put some things in the basket, leave it at the threshold, and step across into what is waiting for you. (If you change your mind, you can always go back and get it later.)Prompt for this week:Name one thing you’d like to “leave in the basket” as we cross into September. Embers for September In the threshold meditation I recorded for the Goddess Magic Mystery School with an expanded version of the above, I also invited people to consider their “ember for September.” If you imagine your life as a hearth, then September is not necessarily about building a roaring fire, it can simply be about tending a single glowing coal. It might be an ember of rest, or an ember of creativity, an ember of courage, or an ember of trust. You might name this ember with an intention, a word, or simply a sensation in your body. You might place a candle on your altar and light it once a day. You might notice a moment—a hawk flying overhead, a monarch crossing your path, the smell of apples in the air—and name that as your ember of joy Inviting you, too, to consider: What ember am I tending this September? And, then, give that ember what you have: breath, presence, a smile, a few minutes of attention, a hand laid gently on your own heart. Currently reading: (to self) Swordheart—my beloved T. Kingfisher coming through for me again with a daring tale of a middle-aged woman and a dashing and seasoned warrior who happens to inhabit the blade of a sword. (to kids): The Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking—I have already listened to this one, but I decided to see if T. Kingfisher could come through for my kids as well and break us out of our reading rut. We’re doing our best. This one is about a “minor mage” who has power over dough and baking, but finds herself as the last remaining hope of her whole city. (listening to by self) The Raven and the Reindeer—surprise! T. Kingfisher again! This one is based on Nordic folklore and is a retelling of the Snow Queen with some sapphic undertones. About a girl who sets forth to rescue a boy and discovers that perhaps she actually likes girls better than boys. Some Sami folklore and magic are also woven in. side note: Mark is currently reading Nettle and Bone also by…T. Kingfisher. I’ve already listened to myself and it is a favorite for me! (It is coincidentally this month’s book club pick at the local library, which is why I snagged a copy for Mark) (listening to with Tanner) The Magician’s Nephew—I could not resist getting the complete Chronicles of Narnia from Audible when I had a credit to use up before cancelling my membership. It is a single credit purchase for 33 hours and THE ENTIRE SERIES as one file. The first is narrated by Kenneth Branagh too, who is doing an excellent job with voice acting it, so it isn’t like you got discount/AI narrators for such a bargain either! I’m finding the Christian allegory a lot more heavy-handed than I tuned into as a kid and, of course, I’m also annoyed by the “witch is evil” trope, which feels very tired. However, it also contains some truly excellent understated British humor and I did so love this series as a kid that it remains fun to share it. The hearth is not just physical—it is the center of your life, your heart, your body, your inner fire. Consider these questions: How are you tending your own hearth space? Does your home—inner or outer—need more attention, care, or love? Has your home become just a place to sleep and change clothes, instead of a place that nurtures you? An affirmation to continue working with this month (inspired by last month’s turquoise ally): I call myself home to myself. You might repeat: My home nurtures me. I am allowed to seek and receive replenishment. I am allowed to nourish and nurture myself. As the wheel of the year continues to spin, we find ourselves seeking stability and warmth, reaching out to what will comfort and sustain. May we trust the necessary wisdom of both gathering and releasing. May we have plenty of time to settle back with our tea and the wind.
