The Night He Was Watching: How One DNA Upload Ended 40 Years of Terror
(00:00:00) The Night He Was Watching: How One DNA Upload Ended 40 Years of Terror (00:00:42) The Man Behind the Aliases (00:02:28) The East Area Rapist (00:04:00) The Original Night Stalker (00:05:03) The Case That Wouldn't Close (00:06:06) Four Months to a Name (00:07:09) The Parking Lot Confession (00:08:11) We Are Not Afraid of You Anymore (00:09:15) What This Case Changed For more than forty years, the man who called himself no name left no useful trace. In Visalia he ransacked homes and murdered a father in the night. In Sacramento he bound couples, balanced dishes on their backs, and disappeared into the dark more than fifty times. In Southern California's coastal counties he killed thirteen people and vanished again. Law enforcement in three regions hunted three different suspects — and the same man walked free through all of it. This episode follows the full arc of Joseph James DeAngelo's crimes — from the Visalia Ransacker burglaries of 1974 through his years as the East Area Rapist and finally as the Original Night Stalker. It examines how his career as a police officer gave him the knowledge to evade detection, how a catastrophic failure of communication between investigative teams bought him years of undetected operation, and how he retired to a quiet suburb in Citrus Heights while cold case investigators accumulated DNA evidence they couldn't match to a name. Then, in March 2018, retired investigator Paul Holes made one final move before leaving his department: he uploaded the Golden State Killer's DNA profile to GEDmatch, a free public genealogy database. Within days, a genealogist named Barbara Rae-Venter began building a family tree from distant cousin matches — a technique that had never been used to solve a case of this scale before. This is the episode where the wall finally breaks. The cold case DNA revolution that followed — reshaping law enforcement, ethics, and the meaning of genetic privacy — started here, with one upload and one name. This episode includes AI-generated content.

One Man, Three Names: How California's Counties Hunted the Wrong Suspects
(00:00:00) One Man, Three Names: How California's Counties Hunted the Wrong Suspects (00:00:50) Three Names, One Man (00:02:25) The East Area Rapist (00:04:15) The Turn South (00:05:37) The Genealogy Breakthrough (00:07:06) A Parking Lot Confession (00:08:27) The Victims Speak (00:09:44) What This Case Changed (00:11:48) Closing For more than forty years, one of the most prolific serial offenders in American history moved through California's suburbs undetected. The reason wasn't bad luck. It was geography, institutional fragmentation, and a former police officer who understood exactly how investigations worked — and exploited every gap. This chapter traces the three criminal identities of Joseph James DeAngelo: the Visalia Ransacker, responsible for roughly one hundred burglaries in Tulare County and the murder of Claude Snelling in 1975; the East Area Rapist, who targeted suburban Sacramento and Contra Costa counties from 1976 to 1979, raping more than fifty women with the calculated discipline of someone who knew police procedure from the inside; and the Original Night Stalker, whose murders of thirteen people in Southern California between 1979 and 1986 went unlinked to the northern crimes for more than two decades. The through-line is stunning in retrospect. DNA connected the East Area Rapist to the Original Night Stalker crime scenes in 2001 — but the full picture of one man committing all three crime series took decades to emerge, partly because different county agencies refused to share intelligence and, in at least one case, openly dismissed a smaller jurisdiction's detectives who were right. This episode also examines the genealogy breakthrough that finally ended the manhunt: how a free public DNA database called GEDmatch, combined with investigative genetic genealogy, led detectives to DeAngelo's front door in Citrus Heights in April 2018. The cold case DNA revolution that followed — reshaping criminal investigations nationwide — started here. This episode includes AI-generated content.

Before and After: The Three Identities That Hid a Monster for Forty Years
(00:00:00) Before and After: The Three Identities That Hid a Monster for Forty Years (00:00:52) The Three Names (00:02:17) The East Area Rapist (00:04:06) The Original Night Stalker (00:05:26) Michelle McNamara and the Name That Stuck (00:06:32) GEDmatch and the Genealogy Breakthrough (00:07:52) Trash from the Curb (00:08:57) The Guilty Plea (00:10:00) The Victims Speak (00:11:11) The Cold Case Revolution Before April 2018, Joseph James DeAngelo was an unremarkable retired grandfather in a Sacramento suburb. After April 2018, the world understood he had committed fifty rapes, thirteen murders, and over a hundred burglaries across California — operating under three separate criminal identities for more than a decade while working as a police officer. This chapter of the Golden State Killer story traces the full arc of DeAngelo's crimes from the beginning. It starts in Visalia in 1974, where the Ransacker stole sentimental objects and violated the private worlds of his targets — not for profit, but for psychological domination. It follows him into Sacramento as the East Area Rapist, where investigators in six separate jurisdictions failed to share intelligence while he used police radio access to stay ahead of surveillance operations hunting him. And it tracks him south to Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Orange County, where the Original Night Stalker left thirteen people dead before the attacks stopped without explanation in 1986. The episode also examines the silence that followed: the cold case DNA profile sitting in CODIS with no match for decades, the careers that ended without resolution, and the obsession that drove crime writer Michelle McNamara to name him the Golden State Killer before her death in 2016. The genealogy breakthrough that finally closed the gap — a sample of DNA pulled from his curbside trash — transformed not just this case but the entire landscape of cold case true crime investigation. This is where that story begins. This episode includes AI-generated content.

The Man Nobody Suspected: DeAngelo's Double Life in Plain Sight
(00:00:00) The Man Nobody Suspected: DeAngelo's Double Life in Plain Sight (00:00:42) Three Names, One Man (00:03:21) The Officer in the Burglary Unit (00:04:49) The Long Wait (00:07:08) The Upload (00:08:57) The Reckoning (00:10:37) What It Changed He mowed his lawn. He pushed his granddaughter in a stroller around the block in Citrus Heights. For forty years, Joseph James DeAngelo hid the truth of what he was inside the most ordinary life imaginable — and this episode pulls that life apart, layer by layer. This chapter of the Golden State Killer story begins before the name existed. In Visalia in the mid-1970s, a prolific burglar known as the Visalia Ransacker was hitting homes with a methodical, intimate cruelty — stealing single earrings, emptying piggy banks, eating ice cream in victims' kitchens. When that same man shot and killed college professor Claude Snelling during an attempted abduction, something darker came into focus. He was escalating. What made DeAngelo uniquely dangerous wasn't just his violence. It was his profession. He joined the Exeter Police Department in 1973, working in the burglary unit — investigating crimes identical to those he was committing. He had radio access. He understood surveillance. He monitored the very stakeouts designed to catch him and nearly escaped detection in 1975 only by vanishing into darkness. Three separate crime series — the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist, the Original Night Stalker — were investigated in isolation across six California counties, with almost no cross-jurisdictional cooperation. Institutional arrogance between departments cost investigators years. DNA eventually confirmed a single offender, but the FBI's CODIS database returned nothing. The man was invisible in the system built to find him. This is the episode that explains how a serial rapist and murderer lived undetected for four decades — and why that was possible. This episode includes AI-generated content.

The Weight of a Name: How the Golden State Killer Was Finally Unmasked
(00:00:00) The Weight of a Name: How the Golden State Killer Was Finally Unmasked (00:00:41) Three Names, One Man (00:02:08) The East Area Rapist (00:03:53) The Original Night Stalker (00:05:15) The Woman Who Named Him (00:06:36) The Genealogy Breakthrough (00:08:00) The Man in Citrus Heights (00:08:58) The Guilty Plea (00:10:38) What This Case Started (00:12:26) I'll Find You One case changed the way America solves crime. Not a new law, not a federal programme — a free genealogy website and the refusal of investigators to stop looking. This episode traces the full arc of Joseph James DeAngelo's crimes and the decades-long hunt to find him. As the Visalia Ransacker, DeAngelo burglarised roughly a hundred homes beginning in 1974, stealing personal items and monitoring police stakeouts from his patrol car. As the East Area Rapist, he paralysed Sacramento's eastern suburbs for three years, attacking more than fifty women with terrifying psychological precision. As the Original Night Stalker, he moved south and began murdering couples in their homes across Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Orange County. Three aliases. One man. And for years, investigators in different jurisdictions refused to believe it was the same person. Crime writer Michelle McNamara changed the conversation. She spent years building contacts, studying evidence, and corresponding with survivors — naming him the Golden State Killer before the world knew his real name. She didn't live to see the arrest. In April 2018, the GEDmatch genealogy database handed investigators the break they needed. A DNA match through a distant relative, a family tree built by genetic genealogist Barbara Rae-Venta, and a discarded sample from DeAngelo's kerb confirmed what no fingerprint ever could. He was arrested at his Citrus Heights home. He was 72 years old. He had been hiding in plain sight for forty years. This is the story of how one cold case cracked open every cold case that followed. The Night He Almost Slipped Away: Visalia, Sacramento, and the Crimes That Built a Monster
(00:00:00) The Night He Almost Slipped Away: Visalia, Sacramento, and the Crimes That Built a Monster (00:00:50) Three Names, One Man (00:01:49) The Visalia Ransacker (00:03:12) The East Area Rapist (00:04:30) The Original Night Stalker (00:05:52) The Genealogy Breakthrough (00:07:54) The Guilty Plea (00:08:47) The Victims Speak (00:09:49) What This Case Changed Before anyone knew the name Joseph James DeAngelo, he was three different suspects in three different jurisdictions — and that structural failure gave California's most prolific predator room to operate for over a decade. This episode traces the full arc of DeAngelo's documented criminal career: from the calculated burglaries of Visalia in 1974, where he exploited his own police radio access to evade stakeouts, to the three-year reign of sexual violence in Sacramento that paralyzed the East Area, to the murder spree in Southern California that ended thirteen lives. Every chapter of this story reveals a pattern of near-misses. Detective Bill McGowen came within feet of catching the Visalia Ransacker in 1975. The murder of professor Claude Snelling went unsolved for years. Sacramento investigators dismissed intelligence shared by Visalia detectives. No one agency had the full picture — because no mechanism existed to build one. The crimes were eventually linked by DNA and behavioral analysis, but only in retrospect. The label that finally unified them — Golden State Killer — came not from law enforcement but from crime writer Michelle McNamara, whose obsessive, meticulous investigation and posthumous book I'll Be Gone in the Dark reframed the entire case for a new generation. This is a story about institutional failure, escalating violence, and the decade-by-decade unraveling of one man's hidden life — a man who was hiding, all along, in plain sight as a police officer. This episode includes AI-generated content.

The Double Life: How a Cop Became California's Most Wanted
(00:00:00) The Double Life: How a Cop Became California's Most Wanted (00:00:44) The Ransacker (00:02:18) The East Area Rapist (00:03:51) The Original Night Stalker (00:04:56) The Man Behind the Aliases (00:06:14) Michelle McNamara and the Reopened Search (00:07:19) The GEDmatch Breakthrough (00:08:51) The Plea and the Reckoning (00:09:57) The Voices That Waited Forty Years (00:11:14) What This Case Changed He worked in a burglary unit. He had access to police radio channels, knew when stakeouts were planned, and understood evidence collection from the inside. Joseph James DeAngelo wasn't just a serial killer hiding in plain sight — he was hiding behind a badge. This episode follows the full arc of DeAngelo's criminal evolution: from the Visalia Ransacker's intimate, psychologically precise break-ins beginning in 1974, through the East Area Rapist's methodical assault campaign across Sacramento and Contra Costa counties, to the Original Night Stalker's murder spree across Southern California that ended, without explanation, in 1986. Three names. One man. Six separate county investigations that never connected. We examine how systemic failures — siloed jurisdictions, dismissed inter-agency tips, the absence of a shared DNA database — allowed decades of violence to continue. We look at the moment Visalia detective Bill McGowen nearly caught him during a stakeout, and why DeAngelo's 1979 firing from the Auburn Police Department coincides precisely with the end of the Sacramento attacks. We also trace what the crimes themselves reveal about the offender: the sentimental trophies taken from ransacked homes, the dishes placed on bound victims' backs, the phone calls to survivors. Each detail points to a man driven not by profit but by the need for absolute psychological control. This is the chapter that explains how a killer operated across California for twelve years and then vanished into suburban Citrus Heights — and why it took a retired investigator and a free genealogy website to finally find him. This episode includes AI-generated content.

Guilty Plea, Parking Lot Justice: The Day DeAngelo Faced His Victims
(00:00:00) Guilty Plea, Parking Lot Justice: The Day DeAngelo Faced His Victims (00:01:01) The Ransacker (00:02:52) The East Area Rapist (00:04:32) The Night Stalker Moves South (00:06:12) Michelle McNamara and the Long Search (00:07:22) The Genealogy Breakthrough (00:09:09) The Guilty Plea (00:10:56) What This Case Built Between 1974 and 1986, a single man committed more than 120 burglaries, more than fifty rapes, and thirteen murders across six California counties — operating under three separate names because no investigator had yet seen the full picture. He was the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist, and the Original Night Stalker. He was also a former police officer who understood exactly how to stay invisible. This episode traces the complete criminal arc of Joseph James DeAngelo: from the psychological precision of his early burglaries in Visalia — stealing single earrings, draining children's piggy banks, monitoring police radio frequencies — to the controlled terror he imposed on Sacramento households throughout the late 1970s, to the murder spree that moved south and went cold in 1986. Decades passed. Databases didn't exist. Jurisdictions didn't talk. Fingerprints found nothing. Then came April 2018. Investigator Paul Holes and the team behind the cold case uploaded a partial DNA profile to GEDmatch, a public genealogy database. Within days, a family tree pointed to a retired grandfather in Citrus Heights. Surveillance DNA from DeAngelo's discarded rubbish confirmed the match. He was arrested in his driveway. We also examine Michelle McNamara's obsessive decade-long hunt for the killer she named the Golden State Killer — and how her posthumous book, I'll Be Gone in the Dark, brought a generation of true crime listeners into this case before the arrest changed everything. The cold case DNA revolution that transformed American criminal justice began here. This is the chapter that explains how. This episode includes AI-generated content.

The Man Nobody Caught: How DeAngelo Hid in Plain Sight for Forty Years
(00:00:00) The Man Nobody Caught: How DeAngelo Hid in Plain Sight for Forty Years (00:00:32) Where It Started (00:02:13) The East Area Rapist (00:03:38) Moving South (00:04:56) The Years That Passed (00:05:54) Michelle McNamara and the Name That Wouldn't Come (00:06:48) The GEDmatch Breakthrough (00:08:18) The Arrest (00:08:58) The Courtroom Parking Lot (00:09:46) The Victims Speak (00:10:48) What This Case Built For twelve years, Joseph James DeAngelo committed some of the most brutal crimes in California history — while working as a sworn police officer. In this chapter of the Golden State Killer story, we follow the full arc of his crimes from their disturbing origins in Visalia's Central Valley to the coordinated sexual assaults that paralyzed Sacramento, and finally to the murder spree that terrorized Southern California under a third name: the Original Night Stalker. DeAngelo didn't just evade investigators. He had a radio. He knew how stakeouts worked. He knew how police thought — because he was one. When Visalia detectives tried to warn Sacramento that their East Area Rapist and the Visalia Ransacker were the same man, they were dismissed as small-town cops chasing shadows. That decision cost years and lives. This episode examines the structural failures that let one predator move across six jurisdictions undetected: the siloed investigations, the agencies that didn't share, the DNA evidence that sat in databases for decades with no match. It's a story about how institutional blind spots can shield the most dangerous people in a community — and how a former police officer became California's most prolific violent criminal hiding in a Sacramento suburb called Citrus Heights. From the first murder in Visalia in 1975 to the cold case DNA revolution that finally ended the manhunt, this is the chapter that explains not just what DeAngelo did — but how he got away with it for so long. This episode includes AI-generated content.

GEDmatch, Genealogy, and the Arrest That Changed Cold Cases Forever
(00:00:00) GEDmatch, Genealogy, and the Arrest That Changed Cold Cases Forever (00:01:38) The East Area Rapist (00:03:10) The Original Night Stalker (00:04:48) Michelle McNamara and the Long Obsession (00:05:48) The GEDmatch Breakthrough (00:07:22) The Guilty Plea and the Victims' Words (00:09:14) What This Case Changed One arrest changed how law enforcement solves cold cases everywhere. In April 2018, Joseph James DeAngelo — a former police officer hiding in plain sight in Citrus Heights — was identified as the Golden State Killer through a landmark DNA genealogy match on GEDmatch. It was the moment that closed a forty-year manhunt and opened a new era of criminal investigation. This episode follows the full arc of the crimes: from the obsessive, unsettling burglaries of the Visalia Ransacker in 1974, through the fifty rapes attributed to the East Area Rapist across Sacramento and Contra Costa counties, to the murders carried out under the name the Original Night Stalker in Southern California. Three separate investigations. Three separate names. One man — and decades lost because detectives from different jurisdictions refused to share what they knew. We examine why the case resisted solution for so long: the failure of inter-agency cooperation, DeAngelo's insider knowledge as a working cop in the burglary unit, and the absence of any investigative tool capable of connecting the dots. Then we trace what finally changed — Paul Holes's relentless pursuit after retirement, Michelle McNamara's posthumous book I'll Be Gone in the Dark, and the GEDmatch genealogy database that gave investigators the lead they needed. DeAngelo pleaded guilty in 2020. The victims' impact statements that followed are among the most powerful in the history of American true crime. This is the case that proved genetic genealogy works — and made clear it was only the beginning. This episode includes AI-generated content.

The East Area Rapist: Inside the Crimes That Paralyzed Sacramento
(00:00:00) The East Area Rapist: Inside the Crimes That Paralyzed Sacramento (00:00:58) The East Area Rapist (00:03:03) The Warning Nobody Took Seriously (00:04:18) He Moves South (00:05:58) The Man in Citrus Heights (00:06:59) Paul Holes and the GEDmatch Breakthrough (00:08:53) The Plea and the Reckoning (00:10:12) What This Case Changed In 1976, a masked man began moving through Sacramento's eastern suburbs with a discipline that stunned investigators. He cut phone lines. He brought his own bindings. He studied neighborhood routines for weeks before striking. Between 1976 and 1979, the man who would later be identified as Joseph James DeAngelo — the Golden State Killer — raped more than fifty women across Sacramento and Contra Costa counties, leaving behind a trail of psychological devastation as calculated as any physical crime. This chapter of the story reveals the machinery behind the attacks: how DeAngelo used his background in law enforcement to monitor police radio, anticipate stakeouts, and exploit the boundaries between rival jurisdictions. Detectives from Visalia recognised his signature and warned Sacramento investigators. Those warnings were dismissed. Six separate district attorney offices were eventually connected to his crimes, each working in isolation — and the gaps between them became his greatest protection. By 1979, the East Area Rapist went silent in Northern California. He hadn't stopped. He'd moved three hundred miles south to Goleta and Santa Barbara County, where the rapes gave way to murders. Thirteen people killed. The Original Night Stalker, as he was then known, was treated as an entirely different unknown subject — a separate case, a separate file, a separate mystery. Without DNA technology and without cross-jurisdictional communication, he remained invisible for decades. This episode examines the structural failures — institutional, geographic, and technological — that allowed one of America's most prolific violent criminals to operate across California for more than a decade without being caught. This episode includes AI-generated content.

From Ransacker to Killer: The Escalation That Took Forty Years to Explain
(00:00:00) From Ransacker to Killer: The Escalation That Took Forty Years to Explain (00:00:51) The Visalia Ransacker (00:02:30) The Night Claude Snelling Died (00:03:33) East Area Rapist (00:05:15) The Original Night Stalker (00:07:00) Michelle McNamara and the Cold Case That Wouldn't Close (00:07:46) The GEDmatch Breakthrough (00:08:43) Arrest, Plea, and the Parking Lot (00:10:13) What This Case Changed A journalism professor steps into his own yard to protect his teenage daughter, and is shot dead. That single night in September 1975 is the hinge on which this entire story turns — the moment the Golden State Killer's crimes shifted from psychological intrusion to lethal violence. This episode follows the full arc of Joseph James DeAngelo's criminal escalation: from the Visalia Ransacker's strange, intimate burglaries across roughly one hundred homes in 1974–75, through the systematic terror of the East Area Rapist in Sacramento's suburbs, to the couples murdered by the Original Night Stalker in Southern California. Three separate investigations. Three separate names. One man hiding in plain sight as a working police officer. At the center of this episode is a question that haunted cold case investigators for decades: how does someone move from stealing children's piggy banks to murdering thirteen people? The answer is not a single moment — it is a progression, and the Snelling shooting is where that progression becomes unmistakable. We also examine one of the most consequential failures in California law enforcement history: the moment Sacramento investigators dismissed Visalia's evidence linking their Ransacker to the East Area Rapist. Jurisdictional arrogance, in this case, may have cost lives. For listeners following the cold case DNA revolution that ultimately unmasked DeAngelo in 2018, this episode lays the essential groundwork — the full criminal record that GEDmatch genealogy technology finally closed. This episode includes AI-generated content.

Three Names, One Killer: The Crimes That Shook California
(00:00:00) Three Names, One Killer: The Crimes That Shook California (00:00:35) Visalia, Nineteen Seventy-Four (00:01:56) The Night Claude Snelling Died (00:02:38) The East Area Rapist (00:04:04) Six Counties, No Connection (00:05:20) Michelle McNamara and the Cold Case That Wouldn't Let Go (00:06:29) Paul Holes and the GEDmatch Upload (00:07:46) The Arrest (00:08:27) The Courthouse Parking Lot (00:09:49) What Changed After Joseph James DeAngelo hid in plain sight for more than forty years — a retired suburbanite in Citrus Heights who was also the most prolific unidentified serial offender in American history. This episode maps the full, devastating arc of his crimes across California: the intimate invasions of the Visalia Ransacker, the controlled terror of the East Area Rapist, and the murders attributed to the Original Night Stalker. Beginning in Visalia in 1974, DeAngelo burglarized roughly one hundred homes — stealing single earrings, destroying family photographs, eating ice cream from victims' freezers. These were not crimes of profit. They were crimes of intrusion. And they were carried out by a serving police officer who monitored stakeouts on a scanner and knew exactly how investigators organized their searches. By 1976, the crimes had escalated into sexual assault across Sacramento and Contra Costa counties. More than fifty attacks. Six counties. Three separate law enforcement jurisdictions — none of them systematically sharing information in a way that would have revealed the pattern. When Visalia investigators warned Sacramento that the East Area Rapist looked familiar, they were dismissed. That dismissal cost years. By the time DeAngelo moved south to Santa Barbara and the attacks became murders, investigators were effectively hunting three different men. Thirteen victims died. He stopped in 1986 and went quiet. This episode also examines how Michelle McNamara's book "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" returned the case to public consciousness — and how her coining of the name "Golden State Killer" set the stage for the genealogy DNA breakthrough that would finally end the manhunt. This episode includes AI-generated content.

The Man Nobody Suspected: California's Most Prolific Violent Criminal
(00:00:00) The Man Nobody Suspected: California's Most Prolific Violent Criminal (00:01:02) The Ransacker (00:02:35) The Snelling Murder (00:03:44) The East Area Rapist (00:05:48) The Original Night Stalker (00:07:02) What DNA Made Possible (00:08:43) Joseph James DeAngelo (00:09:55) The Parking Lot Plea and the Statements That Followed (00:10:59) What This Case Changed Before the name Golden State Killer existed, there were three separate monsters — or so investigators thought. The Visalia Ransacker. The East Area Rapist. The Original Night Stalker. They were the same man: Joseph James DeAngelo, a California police officer who used his department radio to evade the very stakeouts designed to catch him. This opening chapter traces the full arc of DeAngelo's criminal career from its beginning. Starting in April 1974 in Visalia's quiet residential streets, a burglar was taking things that made no sense — single earrings, children's piggy banks, family photographs he destroyed on the spot. These weren't crimes of profit. They were crimes of violation. The Visalia Ransacker wanted intimate access to strangers' private lives. Within eighteen months, he escalated to murder, killing journalism professor Claude Snelling during an attempted abduction. Then he moved north. By 1976, Sacramento County was reporting a masked intruder attacking couples in their homes — binding, raping, psychologically tormenting. Over fifty assaults across multiple counties, investigated in isolation by agencies that refused to share information or believe they were hunting a single offender. The institutional failures here are as important as the crimes themselves. Jurisdictions competed instead of collaborated. A small-town detective's correct instinct — that the Ransacker and the East Area Rapist were the same person — was reportedly dismissed with contempt. DeAngelo, still employed in law enforcement, continued operating with insider knowledge of how searches were being run. This episode establishes the foundation: how a police officer became America's most prolific known serial offender, and why it took forty years and a genealogy database to finally say his name.
