#665 The Engine of Delivery: Why Your Hand Path—Not Your Clubhead—Is the Key to Golf Performance

Most golfers focus on the clubhead, but the club is only the final result of how the body moves. The real engine of delivery is the hands. They are the final link in the kinetic chain, transferring energy from the body to the club. If you want to improve club delivery, change the movement of the hands—not the clubhead.

An efficient golf swing follows a proximal-to-distal sequence:

Ground → Pelvis → Ribcage → Shoulders → Arms → Hands → Club

When this sequence works correctly, the club naturally delivers:

More consistent swing path

Better shaft orientation

Improved angle of attack

Stable face control

Centered contact

Reliable low-point control

The hands move in five dimensions:

Inward and outward

Up and down

Toward and away from the target

Closer to and farther from the body

Around the torso

Problems with hand movement create predictable swing faults. Hands moving outward too early steepen the shaft and separate the trail elbow. Hands staying behind the body trap the club. Hands moving upward too early cause thin strikes, while slowing the hands forces body rotation to stall.

During the backswing, hand depth is created by pelvis and ribcage rotation—not by pulling the arms behind the body. In transition, elite players allow the hands to move inward and downward naturally through pressure shift, ribcage rotation, trail-shoulder external rotation and gravity. Through impact, the hands continue moving around and upward with the body. If the hands stop, the club releases uncontrollably.

Trying to manipulate the clubhead, such as "dropping it into the slot," usually treats the symptom instead of the cause. Effective coaching starts by analyzing the club pattern, then the hand path, followed by the arms, shoulders, ribcage and pelvis to identify where the sequence breaks down.

Practice Drill: Make slow swings without a ball. Feel the body rotate to move the hands inward and downward during transition, then around and upward through impact. The key feeling is simple:

The body organizes the hands. The hands organize the club.

Key Takeaways

The club responds to hand movement.

Hand path controls club delivery.

Efficient body rotation creates efficient hand movement.

Stable impact comes from continuous hand motion, not hand manipulation.

Understand the body. Organize the hands. Control the club.

If you enjoyed this article, subscribe to the channel and explore the eCoach360° Golf Intelligence Platform, including the 48-hour free trial and the 30-Day Golf Biomechanics, Kinematics, Ground Reaction Forces & Club Kinematics Certification Program.

📺 The Explainer

www.eCoach360.com

#664 Mastering the Transition: The Science of Elbow Separation and Shoulder Rotation

📺 The Explainer

www.eCoach360.com

#663 Science of the Sole: Mastering Clubface Control for Elite Wedge Performance

Many golfers have solid full swings but struggle with fat or thin wedge shots. The real issue is rarely swing path—it is inconsistent low-point control caused by poor interaction between the club's sole and the turf.

The key to elite wedge play is Effective Bounce. Bounce isn't just the number stamped on the club; it's created dynamically by how the club is delivered at impact. A stable, slightly open clubface allows the sole to glide through the turf, while a closing face drives the leading edge into the ground, increasing the chance of heavy shots.

Several factors determine Effective Bounce:

Clubface orientation

Shaft lean

Handle height

Attack angle

Sole grind and turf conditions

Excessive forward shaft lean, aggressive forearm roll, or a steep attack reduce bounce and expose the leading edge. Maintaining a stable face lets the sole skim the turf, creating more consistent contact and a much larger margin for error.

Elite wedge players don't manipulate the club with their hands. They rotate the ribcage and pelvis, allowing the body to move the handle through impact while keeping the face stable. If the body stops rotating, the hands flip, the face closes, and consistency disappears.Common faults

Excessive forearm roll

Too much forward shaft lean

Body stall

Trail-hand flip

Overly steep attack angle

Clubface Control Drill

Set up with the clubface slightly open.

Make a waist-high backswing.

Rotate your chest and pelvis through impact.

Finish with the club in front of your body and the clubface still visible.

Practice slow-motion rehearsals before progressing to 40–50% speed. Increase speed only when contact, launch, and spin remain consistent.Key Takeaways

Effective Bounce depends on delivery, not static bounce.

A stable clubface keeps the sole working instead of the leading edge digging.

Continuous body rotation prevents hand manipulation.

Think "glide" instead of "hit" for better launch, spin, and distance control.

If you enjoyed this article, subscribe to our channel and follow our research on golf biomechanics, kinematics, ground reaction forces, and club delivery.

You're also invited to experience the eCoach360° Golf Intelligence Platform, including a 48-hour free trial and our 30-Day Golf Biomechanics, Kinematics, Ground Reaction Forces & Club Kinematics Certification Program.

Common faultsClubface Control DrillKey Takeaways

📺 The Explainer

www.eCoach360.com
