S2: Episode 3 — What Kids Remember: A Conversation with Dana Schenle
I've known Dana Schenle for more than 25 years. We started teaching at Riverview around the same time, and over the years we've become much more than coworkers—we've become friends and family. Dana is an outstanding third-grade teacher and an incredible mom. She's also someone I've turned to countless times when I had a student who was struggling because she has a remarkable ability to see the child behind the behavior. In this conversation, we talk about the teacher who inspired Dana to become an educator, building meaningful relationships with students, what children remember about the adults in their lives, the importance of parent-teacher partnerships, and what Dana learned as a mother when her daughter struggled with anxiety. And near the end, I ask Dana what she hopes her students remember about her. Her answer is simple: "That I cared about them." Because kids don't just remember what we teach them. They remember that we cared. 🎙️ Good Kids Don't Happen By Accident with Coach Steve ❤️ Keep believing in your kids, because they're still becoming. Take care.

Season2-Episode 2: Mary Andrejko: What Did We Teach Each Other
Season 2, Episode 2 — Mary Andrejko For Episode 2 of Season 2, I sit down with someone I've known since she was nine years old—my former student, basketball player, babysitter, teammate, and now one of my best friends, Mary Andrejko. Mary and I talk about growing up, playing sports, becoming a parent, and the lessons she's carrying from her childhood into raising her four-year-old daughter. We talk about being teachable, accountability, learning from failure, the importance of a village, putting down our phones, and making time for the people who matter most. And, of course, we share some pretty funny stories from the many obstacle-course races we've done together over the years. 😂 Sometimes the best conversations don't feel like interviews at all. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed recording it. Good kids don't happen by accident.

S2-Episode 1: The Adults Behind the Child: A Conversation with Shawn Ogrodowski
Season 2 is here! For the first season of Good Kids Don't Happen By Accident, Coach Steve shared stories and lessons from nearly three decades of teaching, coaching, parenting, and working with kids. Season 2 is a little different. This season, Steve is sitting down with people who have spent their lives helping young people grow—and there's no better person to begin with than longtime teaching partner and friend Shawn Ogrodowski. Steve and Shawn worked side-by-side for many years, becoming the longest-running sixth-grade team in their school's history. In this conversation, they talk about what really helps children succeed—not just in school, but in life. They discuss the partnership between parents, teachers, and children, handling disagreements, anxiety, resilience, being present with your kids, the importance of listening, and what Shawn has learned from decades of teaching. There's also plenty of laughter—including the story of the infamous stuffed squirrel. 😂 And toward the end, Steve and Shawn remember the man who brought them together: their former principal and friend, Gary Winkler, and the simple message he lived by: Work hard and be nice. Some lessons are worth passing on. Because good kids don't happen by accident. They're built through expectations, encouragement, accountability, and adults who never stop believing in who they can become. ❤️ Keep believing in your kids, because they're still becoming. 🎙️ Good Kids Don't Happen By Accident with Coach Steve #GoodKidsDontHappenByAccident #CoachSteve #Parenting #RaisingKids #Education

Episode 10: Who Are You Becoming? - Season 1 Finale
After nearly three decades of watching children grow up as a teacher—and raising two boys of my own—I've come to believe that parenting isn't about raising perfect children. It's about helping them become good human beings. In the Season 1 finale of Good Kids Don't Happen By Accident, we take a step back and look at the bigger picture. We've talked throughout this season about accountability, excuses, friendships, mindset, humility, encouragement, and so much more. But underneath all of those lessons is one important question: Who am I helping my child become? In this episode, I talk about the long game of parenting—why our children eventually need to learn to stand on their own, why we sometimes have to let them struggle instead of rescuing them, and why the grades, trophies, mistakes, and disappointments may not matter nearly as much as the person our children ultimately become. I also get personal and talk about my own mistakes as a parent, because none of us gets this right all the time. Our children don't need perfect parents. They need parents who keep showing up, keep teaching, keep listening, hold them accountable, and remind them that they are deeply loved. And perhaps the most important lesson of all: Your voice eventually becomes your child's inner voice. So what do you want that voice to say? As we close Season 1, I hope you'll keep believing in your children—even when they struggle, fail, make mistakes, or disappoint you. Because they're still becoming. And so are we. Thank you for joining me for Season 1 of Good Kids Don't Happen By Accident. I'll see you in Season 2.

Episode 9: One of the Greatest Gifts You Can Give Your Child
Episode 9: One of the Greatest Gifts You Can Give Your Child What's one of the greatest gifts you can give your child? It's not money. It's not trophies. It's not a new toy. It's giving them the confidence that one mistake, one bad day, or one disappointing performance will never change how much they're loved. In this episode, Coach Steve shares a personal story about his oldest son's heartbreaking disqualification at a championship swim meet and the parenting lesson that came from that moment. You'll learn: Why children need emotional safety to grow. The difference between high expectations and conditional love. How your response to your child's failures shapes their confidence. Why children should never have to wonder if they've lost your love after making a mistake. Because children don't just remember their successes. They remember how the people they love most responded when things didn't go as planned. Because good kids don't happen by accident. They're built through expectations, encouragement, accountability, and adults who never stop believing in who they can become.

Episode 8: The Praise Trap
Are we accidentally praising the wrong things? As parents, we all want to encourage our children. We tell them they're smart, talented, gifted, and athletic. Those compliments come from a place of love. But what if some of our best compliments have unintended consequences? In this episode, Coach Steve shares two powerful true stories—one from nearly 30 years in the classroom and another from the karate dojo—that reveal why praising talent alone can sometimes create a fear of failure, while praising effort, perseverance, and character helps children develop the confidence to take on life's greatest challenges. In this episode you'll discover: Why labels like "smart" and "gifted" can sometimes hold children back. How praising effort builds resilience and a growth mindset. The difference between protecting a child's image and encouraging their growth. Why perseverance often matters more than natural talent. Your words become your child's inner voice. Let's make sure we're giving them something worth repeating. Because good kids don't happen by accident; they're built through expectations, encouragement, accountability, and adults who never stop believing in who they can become.

I Was Wrong
What if the three most powerful words a parent can say are... "I was wrong"? Every parent makes mistakes. Every teacher does. Every coach does. The question isn't whether we'll get everything right—it's what we do when we realize we've gotten something wrong. In this episode, I share two very personal stories from my own life—one as a father and one as a teacher—that taught me one of the most important lessons I've learned in nearly 30 years of working with children. We'll explore: Why apologizing doesn't weaken your authority—it strengthens it. How admitting mistakes builds trust instead of destroying it. Why children learn more from what we model than from what we lecture. How a sincere apology can become one of the greatest lessons we ever teach our children. If you've ever wished you could go back and handle a parenting moment differently, this episode is for you. Because our children don't need perfect parents. They need honest ones. Because good kids don't happen by accident; they are built through expectations, encouragement, accountability, and adults who never stop believing in who they can become.

Episode 6: The Power of Yet
Episode 6: The Power of Yet What if one tiny word could change the way your child sees themselves? After nearly 30 years of teaching, coaching, and mentoring children, I discovered that one of the greatest differences between kids who thrive and kids who give up isn't intelligence—it's mindset. In this episode, I share the powerful lesson behind a simple three-letter word: yet. You'll learn: Why children often limit themselves with the words they choose. How parents can replace discouragement with possibility. The difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. Why the word "yet" can transform "I can't" into "I'm still learning." I'll also share a true story from my classroom that forever changed the way I encouraged students when they faced difficult challenges. This lesson shaped the way I taught every year, and I believe it has the power to shape the way we encourage the children in our lives. Because good kids don't happen by accident. They're built through expectations, encouragement, accountability, and adults who never stop believing in who they can become.

Episode 5: Dangerous Words
What if five simple words could quietly shape the course of a child's future? As parents, teachers, and coaches, our words carry incredible weight. In this episode, Coach Steve shares one of the most important lessons he learned during nearly 30 years of working with children: the labels we repeat can become the identity our children believe.Through a powerful true story from the classroom, you'll discover:Why labels can limit a child's potential. The difference between describing behavior and defining a child. How confidence grows when children are given opportunities instead of limitations.Practical ways to encourage growth without unintentionally holding kids back.Children are always becoming. Our job is to help them see who they can become—not convince them they're stuck being who they are today. If you're a parent, grandparent, teacher, coach, or anyone who influences young people, I hope this episode encourages you to think about the power of your words.Because good kids don't happen by accident. Why I'm doing this Podcast
For the first few episodes of Good Kids Don't Happen By Accident, I've shared stories and lessons from more than 30 years of teaching, coaching, and mentoring children. But I realized something important: many of you don't know who I am or why I started this podcast. In this special episode, I introduce myself and share the journey that led me here. You'll hear: How nearly three decades of working with children changed my understanding of success The surprising lesson I learned about what matters most in raising responsible kids Why I believe parenting has a greater impact than talent, intelligence, or ability What raising my own two sons taught me about accountability, expectations, and character How a lifetime of experiences in the classroom, on the court, and in the dojo inspired me to write a book and start this podcast As I entered retirement, I felt a strong responsibility to pass along the lessons I've learned from working with thousands of children and families. My hope is that these stories and insights will help parents raise responsible, resilient, and accountable young people. Because good kids don't happen by accident. They're built through expectations, accountability, consistency, and the guidance of adults who care enough to prepare them for life. Thank you for listening and being part of this journey.

Episode 3: The Friendship Trap
Every parent wants a close relationship with their child. We want our kids to trust us, talk to us, and feel comfortable around us. But somewhere along the way, many parents begin confusing connection with leadership. In this episode, Coach Steve shares a powerful real-life story about a student who stopped seeing adults as authority—and how the reactions of the adults around him quietly shaped that belief. This episode explores: The difference between being a parent and being a friend Why avoiding correction can damage respect over time How accountability and strong relationships actually work together What kids really need from adults when behavior goes wrong You’ll also hear why children often feel safest not when boundaries disappear—but when expectations are clear and consistent. Because a strong relationship with your child doesn’t come from avoiding hard moments… It comes from handling them the right way. And good kids don’t happen by accident—they’re built through expectations, accountability, and consistency.

Episode 2: The Excuse Trap: How Good Intentions Create Bad Habits
Have you ever caught yourself saying things like, “He’s just tired,” or “She didn’t mean it”? In the moment, it feels like you’re helping. But over time, those small excuses can turn into something much bigger. In this episode, Coach Steve breaks down what he calls the excuse trap—how well-intentioned explanations can quietly remove accountability and shape long-term behavior. Through a real classroom example, you’ll see how patterns begin, why kids come to expect excuses, and how those habits can be difficult to undo. This episode explores: The difference between an explanation and an excuse What kids actually learn when adults step in too quickly How small, repeated responses shape long-term behavior Simple ways to hold kids accountable without being harsh If you’ve ever struggled with when to step in and when to hold the line, this episode will give you a clear, practical framework you can use right away. Because excuses don’t protect kids… They prepare them to avoid responsibility. And good kids don’t happen by accident—they’re built through expectations, accountability, and consistency.
