And they'd won that argument, they thought, because they worked at the Don't Be Evil company. But actually, it was A, because they worked at the Don't Be Evil company, which meant that you could attract talented people who could get a job somewhere else. And B, because they would lose more money than they would make by being evil, because they had competitors, and they had regulators, and they had like... external sources of discipline, not just their workforce, but also markets and states who might crack down on them.
