A Servant of Christ Jesus: The Gospel That Claims Your Life

Romans begins not with Paul's accomplishments, reputation, education, or influence, but with Jesus Christ. Paul introduces himself as "a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God." Before Paul explains the gospel, he shows what the gospel had done in his own life. Jesus Christ had taken a persecutor of the church and made him His servant. Christ had called Paul with unique apostolic authority and set him apart to proclaim God's good news concerning His Son. In this sermon on Romans 1:1, Dave Jenkins explains why the Christian's deepest identity is found in belonging to Jesus Christ. He also considers the unique and foundational nature of Paul's apostleship, why the church does not need modern apostles, and why Christians must remain under the apostolic Word given in Scripture. The gospel is not human philosophy, moral improvement, political ideology, or religious self-help. It is the message of what God has accomplished through the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ for the salvation of sinners. The gospel does not merely improve one area of life. It reorders the entire life under the lordship of Christ. The gospel that saves sinners also claims sinners for the glory of God.
