Alex Berger - An American tries to explain Danish sayings
Why are Danes so obsessed with bears? What does it mean to be a lucky potato? And how can doing someone a favor actually make things worse? In this episode of Gor:geous Talks, I sit down with Alex Berger, an American writer, photographer, and long-time resident of Denmark, to explore the strange, funny, and sometimes surprisingly insightful world of Danish sayings.
Alex recently published "The Essential Book of Danish Sayings", featuring 167 expressions and 65 illustrations. After spending two and a half years researching them, he has plenty of stories to share.
We talk about how these expressions reflect Danish humor and culture, why some sayings are nearly impossible to translate, and what happens when an American tries to make sense of phrases involving bears, potatoes, shaved goats, and other unexpected things.
We also discuss Alex's creative process, including how he used AI to bring the book's illustrations to life, and put my knowledge of Danish sayings to the test in a little guessing game.
Enjoy the conversation, and let us know: What's your favorite Danish saying?

Michela Gambino: How dancing in Copenhagen funds clean water in Madagascar
What happens when you mix salsa and bachata dancing, clean water projects, and 45 volunteers who don't get paid? You get cph4water - and Michela ran the whole thing.
In this episode, Michela and I dig into what it actually takes to lead a volunteer organization where people can walk away anytime. We talk about how cph4water grew from 20 to 45 volunteers under her presidency, how she balances being the boss in meetings and a student on the dance floor, and the tension between "we're doing charity" and "we need to run this properly." She's honest about the hard parts - the burnout, the scheduling nightmares, and the one piece of advice she'd give anyone thinking of starting something like this: you cannot do it alone.
Key topics:
Leading volunteers who owe you nothing
Growing a community from 20 to 45 people (and keeping it together)
The real tension between running a charity and running it well
Why delegation is the hardest skill in volunteer work
Her honest advice for anyone wanting to start or join something like this

Mathias Bjørnhof: How to prepare for futures you can't predict
What happens when a futurist starts his own business? Turns out, even someone who thinks about the future for a living can't predict what's coming next.
Mathias and I studied entrepreneurship together. A few years later, he left his job to build Anticipate - a consultancy that helps organizations stop planning for one future and start preparing for many. In this conversation, we get into why most companies are stuck using frameworks from the 80s, how to tell real signals from noise, and what it actually takes to sell something 99.99% of people have never heard of.
It's strategic, personal, and full of moments where we just figure things out together… as old classmates do.

(ENG) Gareggin - What it takes to turn the city into your own canvas
In this episode, I talk to my cousin, the incredibly talented Yerevan-based artist, Gareggin. We dive deep into his creative mind, exploring his journey from watching his grandfather's architectural designs as a child to painting massive, iconic street murals in the heart of Armenia.

In this episode, we cover:
The evolution of Gareggin's unique artistic style and the shift toward contemporary pop-art.
The story behind his mechanical "Eye" sculpture, showcased at the Venice Biennale and later sold in Dubai.
A behind-the-scenes look at his massive street murals dedicated to Motherhood on Saryan Street and to Parajanov on Northern Avenue.
His future plans, including a brand new studio space and a 2026 exhibition in the United States.
