Episode 136: Luke 3:23-38 - More than Your Family Story

Who are you—and what gets the final word in defining your identity? In Luke 3:23–38, the genealogy of Jesus may look at first like little more than a long list of unfamiliar names. But Luke is doing something far deeper. By tracing Jesus’ lineage all the way back through David, Abraham, Noah, Adam, and ultimately to God, Luke shows us both who Jesus is and why He came.Jesus entered fully into the broken story of humanity. His family line includes failure, idolatry, betrayal, sexual sin, drunkenness, injustice, and murder. He did not stand at a safe distance from our mess. He stepped directly into it in order to redeem it. At the same time, Jesus is more than merely human. He is the Son of God—the true and better Adam, the promised offspring of Abraham, the rightful King from David’s line, and the fulfillment of God’s promises. And that changes the way we understand our own stories. Our families shape us. We inherit blessings, wounds, patterns, failures, and expectations. But for those who are in Christ, our ancestry, our wounds, our accomplishments, and even our sins no longer possess the authority to define us.Our past may remain part of our testimony, but it does not have to remain our title. In Christ, we receive a new identity, a new family, and a new inheritance. And having been reconciled to God, we are sent into the world as ambassadors carrying the message of reconciliation to others.

Episode 135: Luke 3:21-22 - Beloved Before You Begin

In this sermon from Luke 3:21-22, we look at the baptism of Jesus and the beautiful picture it gives us of God’s heart and God’s plan. Though John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance, Jesus had no sin to repent of. So why was he baptized? Jesus tells us in Matthew’s Gospel: “to fulfill all righteousness.” In obedience to the Father, Jesus identifies with sinners so that sinners might be identified with him through faith. At the Jordan River, we see the Son obeying, the Spirit descending, and the Father declaring his delight: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” This moment inaugurates Jesus’ ministry and reveals him as the promised Messiah, the true prophet, priest, and king who came to accomplish salvation for his people. But this passage is not only something to understand; it is something to receive. Because of Jesus’ perfect life, sacrificial death, and resurrection, those who trust in him are not merely forgiven. We are adopted. The Father’s love for the Son is now poured out on us in Christ. This sermon invites us to worship the triune God, rest in the Father’s love, and walk in Spirit-empowered obedience. Whether you are wrestling with repentance, forgiveness, faith, or healing, the good news is this: in Christ, you are beloved, and nothing can separate you from the love of God.

Episode 134: True Faith Bears Fruit - Luke 3:1-20

What does a life changed by God’s grace actually look like? In Luke’s account of John the Baptist, we hear an urgent call to prepare the way for Christ through repentance that bears fruit. This sermon invites us to examine where we place our confidence. Are we resting in the fact that we were baptized or that we attend church? Or do our everyday choices reveal hearts being transformed by the Savior? John’s message presses beyond religious appearances to the desires, habits, and hidden compromises that shape our lives.Have we grown comfortable with sin? What have we excused, concealed, or postponed confessing? These questions call us to bring our sin into the light and turn toward the Father who meets His children with mercy. Repentance begins with honest confession and takes shape as we turn from worldly living to renewed fellowship with God.The reality of coming judgment gives this invitation urgency. Yet for those in Christ, there is assurance: Jesus delivers us from God’s wrath. As Romans 2 reminds us, God’s kindness leads us to repentance. We return because His mercy draws us home.As grace transforms our affections, we begin to love the God we once resisted and hate the sin we once cherished. The fruit of repentance becomes visible in how we live, love, and serve.Listen and consider where God is calling you to turn back to Him today—and how your life, like John’s, can point others toward the hope and mercy found in Christ.
