The first roll call amendment of the markup session — blocking private equity firms from college media rights deals — failed 20-8, with every Republican voting against it.
Maria Cantwell's response to the SEC and Big Ten's continued opposition was the line of the day: "What we did today is say we're not going to let the most powerful and richest conferences dictate to the rest of America what's going to happen to 500,000 athletes." The SEC and Big Ten say the revisions they requested were never accepted despite what they call sustained, good faith engagement, and they remain opposed to the bill as written heading into the next stage.
