Most of us carry assumptions about church membership that we have never stopped to examine. For many, membership sounds like signing up for a gym or a streaming service — a transaction, a formality, a box to check. For others, it feels unnecessary altogether. After all, if you believe in Jesus and belong to the universal body of Christ, why would you need to formally attach yourself to one particular congregation? Is membership even biblical? The answer might surprise you. And it will almost certainly challenge the way you think about what it means to belong

A Gathered & Gathering People
There is a moment most of us remember from the early days of the pandemic lockdowns. The kids stayed in pajamas. The coffee was hot. The couch was comfortable. Church appeared on the television screen, and for a brief window of time, it felt like a reasonable substitute for the real thing. But something was missing. Most people felt it, even if they struggled to name it.
It was like watching a fireplace video on a screen — you could see the flames and hear the crackling, but there was no warmth, no smell, no ambiance. It was a picture of a fire, not a fire. And eventually, that distinction became impossible to ignore. What we were experiencing in those months was the absence of something God designed to be irreplaceable: the gathered church.

What is the church? It seems like a simple question, but the answer is far more profound than most of us have ever considered.
The church is not a place you attend. It is a people you belong to. And understanding that distinction may be one of the most important things a believer can ever grasp.
