Praying the Lord's Prayer Like Jesus Taught Us

Key Takeaway: In ancient Hebrew thought, "heaven" translates directly to "skies"—the realm completely outside human control. Understanding this distinction transforms the Lord's Prayer from a passive ritual into an active alignment with God's sovereignty over daily provision, forgiveness, and protection. If you are like me, you might pray the Lord’s Prayer regularly and spend time meditating on how to pray it in a deeper, more effective way. On our site, you can download a guided PDF to walk through this practice individually or as a community. Download our Lord's Prayer Guided Meditations PDF (https://www.graememorris.com/p/the-prayer-jesus-recommended) Today I want to shift how we think about this foundational prayer altogether. The Proto-Hebrew View of the Skies When Jesus instructs his disciples to pray “Our Father in heaven,” he is drawing on an ancient proto-Hebrew understanding of the cosmos. In direct translation, the word used is actually skies. This was not a scientific manual for cosmology or planetary motion. Instead, it reflected how ancient believers observed the world around them: * The Earth: The realm where human beings can act—where we plant seeds, construct buildings, and shape physical materials. * The Skies: The realm completely beyond human control. Humans cannot move the stars, alter the weather, or command the winds. To the ancient mind, the skies were the domain of the invisible mover—the wind, or the Ruach of heaven, operating without human interaction. Saying God is “in the skies” acknowledges that there is nobody like Him. Who sets the stars in motion? Who makes it rain? Only God. Because His power is incomparable, His reputation is unique. Hence: “Holy is Your name.” Kingdom, Will, and Action on Earth When we pray for God’s kingdom to come and His will to be done, two key concepts intersect: * His Kingdom: The way God operates and rules. * His Will: His core intent and design for creation. We are asking that His way of doing things and His direct intentions manifest right here—where we live, where we touch the earth, and where we build. We pray: Let Your rule reign here, and let Your design happen on earth exactly as seamlessly as it occurs in the skies. What Happens When His Kingdom Comes and His Will is Done? The rest of the prayer serves as a concrete picture of what life looks like when God’s kingdom takes root on earth and His will is manifested: * Provision: We lack nothing. We find no lack in us, and He provides wht we actually need when we need it. We can look to the Father with confidence and pray, “Provide our daily needs.” It is not a demand, it’s a statement of the effect of a Heaven to Earth mindset. It’s not a prosperity gospel, it’s being in right order, trusting God for my life and provision. * Forgiveness: We find the grace to release others who have wronged us, in the exact way we rely on our Father to forgive us. We can confidently pray, “Father, forgive us, as WE HAVE forgiven others who have wronged us.” * Protection & Deliverance: He leads us away from overwhelming test where our weak appetites could ensnare us, and rescues us from the plans of the enemy. This is what it looks like when God’s kingdom comes and His will is done on earth as it is in the skies. Thanks for reading! What Does It Mean to Be Born Again? Biblical Salvation

Quick Answer: Being born again refers to divine regeneration—a supernatural re-creation of the human spirit by the Holy Spirit that imparts new spiritual life, aligns the heart with God, and yields genuine moral transformation. Biblical & Historical Theological Framework The phrase “born again” has suffered significant damage in modern culture. It is often reduced to a political voting demographic, an emotional religious experience, or a badge of self-righteous piety. Yet when Jesus introduced this phrase to Nicodemus—a respected, highly educated religious leader in John 3—He was communicating a radical truth that shattered conventional religion. When Jesus tells Nicodemus, “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God,” He uses the Greek phrase gennethe anothen, which carries a double meaning: “born anew” and “born from above.” Nicodemus assumed that eternal life was earned through rigorous moral obedience and heritage. Jesus dismantled this notion, declaring that human effort cannot mend our broken nature. We do not simply need moral polishing; we need spiritual resurrection. Consider physical birth. An infant plays no active role in generating its own existence; it receives physical life as a gift through the initiative of its parents. In the exact same way, spiritual rebirth is an act of sovereign grace. We cannot whip up spiritual life through sheer willpower or ritual performance. The Holy Spirit breathes life into a dead human spirit, giving us a new heart with entirely new desires. The stark choice before every human being is clear: you can attempt to repair the old self through religious performance and self-improvement, or you can surrender to the Holy Spirit and receive a totally new spiritual life purchased by Christ on the cross. Religion attempts to fix the outside; regeneration transforms the inside. In Streams of Living Water, Richard Foster describes how true spiritual rebirth reshapes the entire direction of a person’s life, turning duty into delight. Regeneration does not mean immediate moral perfection, but it creates a new trajectory where the soul truly longs for God. As Dr. Tim Keller famously synthesized in Gospel in Life: “The gospel is this: We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.” Doctrinal Alignment Check This presentation directly aligns with Dr. Wayne Grudem’s definition of Regeneration in Systematic Theology (Chapter 34), asserting that spiritual rebirth is a secret, sovereign act of God in which He imparts new spiritual life to us. It also reflects Dr. Tim Keller’s core gospel ministry framework in Center Church, emphasizing salvation by grace alone through faith alone. Practical Application Maybe you’re asking the question today, “How do I become born again?“ Simply pray this prayer with me: God, I recognize that I cannot change on my own. I need your help. Today, I choose you as my Father, and I choose to believe in your Son, Jesus, and that you sent Him so that I could have eternal life. I ask you to come and transform my life from the inside out by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. If you prayed this prayer, I encourage you to reach out to a local church, tell them you prayed a prayer of salvation online, and ask them to help you with your Christian walk. How to Pray When Anxious- A Biblical Path to Inner Peace

How can a Christian pray effectively when overwhelmed by severe anxiety and mental distress? Quick Summary: Praying through anxiety requires shifting from anxious performance to honest lament and surrender, anchoring the mind in God’s presence through structured petition, thanksgiving, and intentional contemplative stillness. Biblical & Historical Theological Framework Anxiety rarely makes a polite entrance. It arrives as a sudden tightening in the chest, a racing heart, or a relentless stream of “what-if” scenarios that rob us of sleep and sanity. In those moments, telling someone to “just pray about it” often feels less like spiritual wisdom and more like a dismissive burden. We attempt to pray, but our thoughts bombard and demand our attention like an itch we cannot scratch. The Apostle Paul addresses this exact human condition in Philippians 4:6 when he writes, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” Philippians 4:6 The Greek term Paul uses for anxiety is merimnao, which literally means “to divide or fracture the mind.” Anxiety splits our focus between the present moment and a unknowable potential catastrophic future that has not yet happened. Imagine a young child walking through a fierce thunderstorm holding their father’s hand. The thunder continues to roll, and the rain continues to fall, but the child’s panic evaporates. Why? Because the child is no longer trying to manage the storm alone; they are anchored to someone stronger than the weather. Prayer does not always instantly silence the storms around us, but it links our frail hands to an omnipotent Father. Remember Jesus in sleeping during the storm? Jesus’ peace was not the absence of the struggle; it was authority over the struggle. In the boat during the storm, He didn’t wait for the waves to die down to “feel” peace; He brought the peace to the storm and commanded it to be still. You face a unavoidable logical choice when anxiety strikes: you can continue carrying the infinite unknowable weight of tomorrow on your finite human shoulders, or you can transfer that weight to an infinite God. Trying to control every outcome is a burden your soul was never built to bear. In The Spirit of the Disciplines, Dallas Willard notes that “Spiritual peace is not the absence of trouble, but the presence of divine order within the soul.” When anxiety strikes, replace frantic words with quiet breath prayers—reciting small fragments of Scripture such as “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1) on every inhalation and exhalation. As Dr. Tim Keller noted in Prayer: “To pray is to accept that we are not in control and that God’s grace is our only true security.” Doctrinal Alignment Check This approach aligns squarely with Dr. Wayne Grudem’s treatment of prayer in Systematic Theology (Chapter 37), which defines prayer as personal communication with God that expresses our total dependence upon Him. It is also grounded in Dr. Tim Mackie’s teaching at The Bible Project regarding biblical shalom—not merely emotional calmness, but the holistic restoration of divine order within the human heart. What does the Bible say about managing chronic stress and burnout?

What does the Bible say about managing our chronic stress and burnout? As someone who's come close several times, I wanted to say a few things about this because it's very close to my heart. Chronic stress is really just a scheduling problem. It is actually a spiritual problem rooted in the exhausting attempt to play God and justify our own existence through relentless output. The biblical concept of Shabbat or Sabbath Introducing Genesis is not merely a break from labor, as some people portray it. It is actually a structural declaration that the creation depends on God's ongoing providence, not human striving. In a modern economy driven by performance metrics and digital performance, stress becomes the liturgy of self-reliance. We actually burn out because we carry the functional burden of running our own universe. The Gospel attempts to break this cycle by offering Sabbath rest for the soul. Jesus offers an easy yoke because he carried the crushing weight of our spiritual obligation. As C.S. Lewis eloquently captioned in Mere Christianity, the primary key to spiritual rest is acknowledging that the creature is not the creator. The moment you attempt to run on your own fuel, friction and collapse are inevitable. When we understand that our acceptance is earned by Christ, work transforms from an engine of self-justification into an act of grateful stewardship. Dr. Tim Keller underscored this gospel reality by saying, Sabbath is a countercultural act of trust. To rest is to acknowledge God is at work, and the world will not fall apart if you step back. God designed humanity with physical and spiritual limitations requiring rest, and that true rest is realized through faith in Christ's completed redemptive work, freeing believers from a legalistic self-reliance. So maybe you're like me. Maybe you're looking for an opportunity to break this habit. Some people have done this, and I encourage you to do this too. Institute A weekly Sabbath, a non-negotiable time or block in the week where you deliberately cease from productivity and practice delight in God's creation. It might be an hour, it might be a day, it might be, you know, one hour every night. But begin to practice some kind of space where you practice delight in God's creation while ceasing productivity. Then audit your daily task list and begin to identify where fear and failure or desire for approval is driving your over commitment. Also, practice physical habits of rest, sleep, silence, and turning off digital notifications as acts of spiritual trust. This is a public episode. Why does God feel so distant when I am experiencing suffering?

Why does God feel so distant when I am experiencing suffering? Core Question Why does God feel so distant when I am experiencing suffering? Direct Answer Summary Divine silence in suffering is not divine absence; it is often the severe mercy of God stripping away superficial faith so you can encounter Him as Redeemer rather than a transaction. We move from transactional handouts and we are invited to seek His heart. Biblical & Historical Theological Framework In the narrative architecture of the Hebrew Bible, particularly the Psalms of Lament and Job, the experience of hester panim—the hiding of God's face—is a frequent design pattern. It is never depicted as the end of the covenant, but as the valley through which covenant faith is refined. We live in an urban, hyper-connected culture that conditions us to expect instant feedback and immediate comfort; when God feels quiet, our modern instinct is to assume He is either impotent or indifferent. However, the Cross upends this cultural metric. On the Cross, Jesus Christ endured true, absolute abandonment by the Father, crying out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" so that you would never experience ultimate rejectiond. As Dr. Tim Mackie highlights "The dark night of the soul in Scripture is rarely a sign of God's departure; it is the space where God dismantles our idols of Him so we can see Him as He truly is." C.S. Lewis echoed this transformation, writing: "Not that I am (I think) in much danger of ceasing to believe in God. The real danger is of coming to believe such terrible things about Him." God’s apparent distance invites us to stop loving God for His gifts and start loving God for Himself. Doctrinal Alignment Check This perspective reflects Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology (Chapter 11, "The Unchangeability of God" and Chapter 44, "The Doctrine of Sanctification"). Grudem outlines how God uses trials and emotional desertion as fatherly discipline and refinement, ensuring that while a believer’s subjective feeling of God's presence may fluctuate, His objective, covenantal presence and grace remain immutable. Practical Application Lament Openly: Use the biblical Psalms of Lament to pray your honest pain and confusion directly back to God. Anchor in History: Anchor your heart to the historical reality of the Resurrection rather than your daily emotional state. Leaning on Community: Lean on the physical presence of the local church to carry faith for you when your own feels fragile. This is a public episode. How to Know God’s Will for Your Life and Big Decisions

How do I know God’s will for my life and big decisions?” Direct Answer Summary What is God’s will for your life? God’s will is not a hidden riddle to decode, but the personal transformation of character through knowing God, enabling active, confident decision-making. Biblical & Historical Theological Framework Modern culture treats decision-making as an existential crisis of self-actualization, convincing us that one wrong turn forfeits our authentic path. In the Hebrew Wisdom Literature, chokhmah (wisdom) is not a magic compass for personal navigation; it is learned skill in the art of godly living within the order of God’s cosmos. When crave certainty to be ok, we often approach God’s guidance like an ancient pagan diviner seeking signs and wonders, wanting a blueprint so we can maintain control. “The long way round is the shortest way home.” C.S. Lewis God works through our inner sanctification rather than bypassing our reason. The gospel dynamics invert our anxiety: because your ultimate identity and future are secured by Christ’s finished work, and a NON-moral decision (like a career path or housing choice) cannot ruin your life. Those that know God, think like God. “He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel. ”Psalm 103:7 Instead of diving God’s binary answers, Moses engaged God because he knew the heart of God. “And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived. ”Genesis 4:1 This is the kind of knowing that is more than just loving someone from a distance. “To be loved but not known is comforting but superficial. To be known and not loved is our greatest fear. But to be fully known and truly loved is, well, a lot like being loved by God.” Dr. Tim Keller Because you are fully known and securely loved, God’s sovereign plan encompasses your choices without holding you hostage to divine riddles. Knowing God is how we know how to take care of what’s important to Him. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commands.” John 14:15 This directly translates as, if you love me you will treasure what I told you was important to me. This isn’t about commands this is about loyalty. If you don’t know God, He will look a lot like you. But if you know God, you will render the very image of God as you go. Doctrinal Alignment Check This framework aligns with Wayne Grudem’s distinction between God’s revealed (preceptive) will and His secret (decretive) will (Systematic Theology, Ch. 16).*Grudem notes that Christians are responsible for obeying God’s revealed moral law in Scripture while exercising sanctified judgment, trusting that God’s sovereign providence governs all outcomes without requiring believers to decipher unrevealed decrees beforehand. 3 Steps to Make Decisions in God’s Will * Mindset Shift: Cease looking for mystical signs; saturate your mind with Scripture to align your moral instincts with God’s character. * Community Discernment: Seek counsel from a mature local church community to evaluate your motivations and practical capabilities. * Decisive Action: Make a decision in faith, praying for wisdom, and rest in the knowledge that God’s providence covers your journey. What Does It Mean to Be Made in the Image of God? (Imago Dei Explained)

The Imago Dei (Image of God) is not a physical or spiritual possession like a soul; it is a biblical description of the human vocation to act as God’s functional representative, reflecting His wise and loving rule into the creation. Have you ever noticed how easily we ruin beautiful words by turning them into dusty, academic furniture? Take a phrase like “the image of God.” If you have spent any time in church, you have likely heard it tossed around. We use it to defend human rights, to explain why murder is wrong, or to console ourselves that we are somehow “special.” But if you press the average person on what it actually means, the conversation usually goes rather hazy. Some will tell you it means we have a “soul”—a sort of ghostly, invisible passenger riding inside our physical bodies. Others will say it means we have a mind, or a conscience, or the ability to write poetry. The trouble with all these answers is that they treat the “image” like a possession. We speak of it as if God, at the moment of creation, slipped a shiny, spiritual gold coin into the pocket of human nature, and that coin is what makes us valuable. But what if the image of God is not a coin we carry in our pockets at all? What if it is more like a job we were hired to do—or, better yet, a mirror we were designed to be? 1. What Is the "Image of God" (Imago Dei) in the Bible? To understand what the ancient Hebrews meant when they wrote about the “image of God,” we have to step out of our modern libraries and walk into the dusty air of the ancient Near East. Imagine you are a peasant living in a remote province of a vast empire. The Emperor lives hundreds of miles away in a golden palace you will never see. How do you know you are still under his rule? How do you know where his territory begins and ends? The answer is simple: you walk into the town square and look at the statue. In the ancient world, an emperor or king would erect a physical statue of himself—what the Hebrews called a tselem—in the farthest reaches of his conquered lands. That statue stood where the king could not physically be present. It was a concrete claim of sovereign authority over that region. If you defaced the statue, you were declaring war on the king. If you honored the statue, you were submitting to his reign. Now, here is the breathtaking thing. When the author of Genesis sits down to describe how God built the universe, he uses that exact imperial language. God constructs a massive, cosmic temple—the heavens and the earth—and then He does something that would have made every ancient pagan gasp. He does not place a statue of gold or stone in His temple. Instead, He says: “Let Us make man in Our image (tselem), according to Our likeness (demuth)...” (Genesis 1:26, LSB) Do you see the point? God did not want a cold, static piece of metal representing Him. He chose a living, breathing, walking representative. You are the statue. You were placed in this world to stand at the boundary line of heaven and earth, reflecting the wise, loving rule of the Creator into the creation, and reflecting the worship of the creation back to the Creator. This explains why one of the Ten Commandments is so fiercely stubborn about forbidding physical idols: “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath...” (Exodus 20:4, LSB) It is not because God is allergic to art. It is because He had already made His own living, breathing images! To carve a static idol out of wood and bow down to it is like ignoring a living, loving wife to kiss a crude, wooden puppet you made in her likeness. It is a monstrous demotion. Now, the Hebrews used two words here: image (tselem) and likeness (demuth). Think of it this way. Tselem is the job description—the physical representative standing in the territory. Demuth is the family resemblance—the check that keeps us from thinking we are God. We are like Him, but we are not Him. We are reflections, not the Light itself. 2. Why the Image of God Is More Than Just a Soul Before we go any further, we must clear up a massive misunderstanding that has clouded Christian thinking for centuries. It is the old Greek habit of dividing a human being into neat, separate compartments: a mortal body, an immortal soul, and a mind. When we inherit this Hellenistic view, we begin to think that only the “invisible” part of us—our mind or our soul—is made in the image of God, while our physical bodies are just a temporary, rather troublesome tin can we get to discard at death. But the Hebrew mind did not think this way at all. To the Hebrew, a human being is a unified whole. You do not have a soul; you are a living soul. Your physical body is not an accidental container; it is the very platform upon which your divine job is carried out. Let us look at it this way. Imagine an ambassador sent to represent her country in a foreign land. She needs a physical office, a voice to speak, and papers to sign. If you strip away her ability to speak, act, or write, she ceases to function as an ambassador. In the same way, you cannot separate your “substance” (your physical, rational, embodied self) from your “vocation” (your job as God’s representative). We must not make the mistake of anthropomorphizing God—believing that because we are in His image, God must have physical eyes, ears, and feet like we do. God is Spirit. But we must also avoid the opposite mistake—believing that our physical, everyday work of building, creating, cooking, designing, and governing does not matter to God. We are called to “look like” God not by our physical shape, but by our functional form—by acting with His love, His justice, and His creative wisdom on earth. 3. What Does the Fall Mean for Our Human Vocation? This brings us to the tragedy we call the Fall. The serpent’s lie in the Garden of Eden was a masterpiece of psychological sabotage. He whispered: “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:5, LSB) Here is the supreme irony: Adam and Eve already were like God! They were already crowned as His vice-regents. But the tempter convinced them that they were missing out, that their dependence on God was a cage rather than their source of life. He tempted them to step outside their representative role and try to become independent sovereigns. The trouble with trying to be your own god is that it is a metaphysical impossibility. We are mirrors. A mirror has no light of its own; it can only reflect the light of the sun. What happens if the mirror decides it is tired of relying on the sun and wants to generate its own light? It must turn inward, away from the sky, to look at itself. And what does it reflect then? Nothing but darkness. By cutting ourselves off from the Creator, humanity entered what we might call a self-cannibalizing state. Picture a potted plant that decides it no longer wants to depend on the soil and water provided by the gardener. It pulls its own roots out of the dirt and begins to burn its own leaves to keep itself warm. For a few moments, it might produce a tiny, flickering warmth. But it is consuming its own substance to survive. It is a dying, parasitic thing. That is the state of human sin. Without the divine life-force fueling us, we began to devour our own relationships, our own bodies, and our own planet in a desperate, frantic attempt to sustain our own autonomous life. In this light, God’s decision to banish humanity from the Garden and bar access to the Tree of Life was not an act of vindictive anger. It was a rescue mission. To let a self-cannibalizing human eat from the Tree of Life and live forever would be to immortalize our agony. It would be like keeping a terminal cancer patient alive forever without curing the disease. God put us outside the Garden so we would reach our physical limits, recognize our absolute bankruptcy, and cry out for a Savior. 4. How Jesus Restores Our Role as the Image of God So, how does God repair a broken, self-cannibalizing mirror? He does not do it by issuing a new set of rules from heaven. He does it by stepping into the world of mirrors Himself. He constructs a beautiful, historical chiasm: God made man in God’s image, man chose to be God in man’s image, so Jesus came in man’s image to restore man to God’s image. Jesus did not arrive as a superhero with a magic wand to execute a dry, legal transaction on a cosmic clipboard. He entered human history to systematically reverse the lie of Eden through four radical, historical step-changes. Step 1: The Vulnerable Infant (The Stripping of Self-Sustenance) The first step-change is the voluntary surrender of autonomous power. While Adam grasped for equality with God to feed his own ego, Christ did the exact opposite: “...who, although existing in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, being made in the likeness of men.” (Philippians 2:6–7, LSB) Jesus entered creation not as a towering giant, but as a helpless, crying baby. Think of the staggering humility of this! The One who sustains the galaxies chose a state where He had no self-sustenance whatsoever. He could not feed Himself, protect Himself, or even hold up His own head without a human caregiver. This was the ultimate “proof-of-concept.” Jesus demonstrated that being truly human does not mean being independent; it means being perfectly, beautifully dependent on the Father’s covering. Step 2: The Jordan Baptism (The New Genesis) The second step-change occurs when Jesus is baptized in the Jordan River: “...and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon Him...” (Matthew 3:16, LSB) If you know your Bible, this scene should make your spine tingle. It is a deliberate, dramatic replay of Genesis 1. In the beginning, the Spirit of God was hovering over the dark, chaotic waters, waiting for the Word to bring forth creation. Now, at the Jordan, the Spirit hovers over the waters once more, and the Father’s voice declares His absolute pleasure in the Son. Before Jesus has performed a single miracle or died on the cross, the Father declares Him to be the perfect, pleasing Son. This is the inauguration of the New Genesis. Jesus is standing there as the first truly “in-tune” human, showing us what life in Eden was always supposed to look like. Step 3: The Spirit-Anointed Prototype (Acts 10:38) The third step-change is Jesus’s active, everyday life. He did not walk around performing miracles by pulling secret, divine levers hidden under His human coat. He lived as a man entirely dependent on the Holy Spirit. As Peter preached: “You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.” (Acts 10:38, LSB) This is what theologians call Christ’s “active obedience.” He was showing us the prototype of restored human function. As God’s living icon, He marched through a world occupied by the deceiver, reclaiming territory not by military violence, but by “doing good and healing.” His life was the ultimate demonstration of what a human being looks like when they are fully plugged into the Source of Life. Step 4: The John 17 Commission (The Restoration of the Corporate Body) The final step-change is the most exciting one of all, because it involves you. On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus prays a radical prayer for His disciples—and, by extension, for all of us: “The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me...” (John 17:22–23, LSB) What is this “glory”? It is the royal-priestly job of bearing the divine image! Jesus does not keep His perfect image-bearing identity to Himself. Through His death, resurrection, and the subsequent outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, He shatters our self-cannibalizing loop and shares His identity with us. 5. Getting Your Job Back This is the heart of the Christian gospel. Salvation is not merely a ticket to a celestial retirement home when you die. It is the restoration of your original, cosmic vocation. Through Jesus, you are adopted into the family business. You are filled with the very same Spirit that hovered over the Jordan and empowered Jesus to heal the broken. You are sent out into your neighborhood, your office, your school, and your art studio to: * Reclaim the Territory: Pushing back the darkness of selfishness, greed, and despair by living out the generous, others-centered love of God. * Cultivate and Create: Designing environments, building relationships, and structuring businesses that reflect the beauty, justice, and order of the Creator. * Live in Radical Dependence: Giving up the exhausting, burning-your-own-leaves struggle of self-sufficiency, and learning to breathe in the daily covering and grace of the Father. The great mirror of your humanity has been cleaned, polished, and turned back toward the Sun. The question is no longer, “Can we be like God?” The answer has already been lived out in history. The question now is: will you step into the world today as His living icon, representing His sovereign, healing love on earth as it is in heaven? As my grandson says, “Papa, sharing is caring!” Help me get the message out. Bibliography Grudem, Wayne A. Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine. 2nd ed. Our Father in the Skies

When we read the words “Our Father in heaven,” we usually imagine a distant, post-mortem destination with pearly gates and clouds. But for the ancient, proto-Hebraic people Jesus was speaking to, the original word was plural: the heavens or the skies. By flattening “the skies” into a far-off location called “Heaven,” we have unintentionally warped what Jesus was actually trying to teach us. When Jesus prayed for God’s will to be done “on earth as it is in the heavens,” He wasn’t talking about two separate worlds. He was talking about two different dimensions of the same reality. The Shift from “Location” to “Authority” In the ancient Near East, “the skies” represented the unknown and the uncontrollable—weather, stars, and seasons. Giving God the title of “Father in the skies” wasn’t about pointing to a geographical address on a cosmic map. It was about acknowledging authority. It meant God sovereignly orders the entire cosmos, managing the things completely outside of human control. As C.S. Lewis later put it, heaven is God’s throne, not His vehicle. The skies remind us of God’s qadosh—His absolute holiness and “otherness”—without disconnecting Him from our world. Overlapping Realms This is where Dr. Tim Mackie’s theology helps us correct our modern assumptions. As Mackie highlights through The Bible Project, the biblical narrative doesn’t view heaven and earth as two distinct locations separated by millions of miles. Instead, they are overlapping, interlocking dimensions. God’s Space (The Heavens): The realm where God’s ideal design, beauty, and justice rule completely. Human Space (The Earth): The realm entrusted to us, which is currently fractured by chaos and self-interest. The entire story of Scripture isn’t about humans escaping earth to go to heaven; it’s about heaven and earth fully reuniting under God’s rule. The Danger of “The Great Divide” When we treat heaven as a faraway place, we slide into a dangerous mindset called dualism—the idea that the physical world is bad or disposable, and only spiritual things matter. This view totally disqualifies humanity from its original purpose. In Genesis, humans were created to be image-bearers and co-creators. Our job description was to partner with God to bring order out of chaos and spread life across the earth. Early church leaders like Irenaeus fought hard against the idea that the physical world didn’t matter, arguing that creation is fundamentally good and destined to be renewed, not abandoned. The Lord’s Prayer as a Realignment Tool When we look at the Lord’s Prayer through this lens, it changes from a passive checklist into a radical tool for realignment. Think about the contrast: The Character of the Father: He is entirely others-centered, life-giving, and free from the human traps of ego, self-preservation, and self-promotion. The Reality of Humanity: We naturally gravitate toward our own comfort, security, and building our own tiny kingdoms. By praying “Your kingdom come, Your will be done,” we are intentionally submitting our territory to His design. We are asking for the blueprint of the heavens (God’s space) to actively overwrite the chaos of earth (our space). We ask for daily bread to fuel this mission, seek forgiveness for the times we tried to build our own selfish kingdoms, and extend that same forgiveness to others. Ultimately, aiming at heaven doesn’t mean ignoring the earth—it is the only way to actually heal it. Hope you enjoyed this as much as I did researching it. The peace of the cross or the couch?

Podcast Show Notes: The Peace of the Cross or the Couch? Episode Description "I just feel a peace about it." It’s a phrase used constantly in spiritual circles as the ultimate green light for decision-making. But in this episode, we unpack Graeme Morris’s convicting article, The peace of the cross or the couch? (https://www.graememorris.com/p/the-peace-of-the-cross-or-the-couch), to challenge whether our "peace" is actually the Holy Spirit or just our survival instinct masquerading as divine guidance. We contrast the modern, lifestyle-driven version of peace with the ancient, disruptive reality of biblical Shalom, and ask the hard question: Are we pursuing the peace of Christ, or are we just trying to protect our comfort? Key Takeaways The Cosmic Sedative Myth: Modern culture often treats the Holy Spirit like an emotional sedative—assuming that if we feel anxious, it’s a "no," and if we feel settled, it’s a "yes." This framework dangerously confuses the absence of conflict with the presence of God. Shalom is Offensive, Not Passive: In its ancient Hebrew context, Shalom isn't a quiet, undisturbed field. It is the active, forceful restoration of order by conquering chaos. True peace doesn't run away from the storm; it brings authority to the storm. The Gethsemane Metric: When Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, His nervous system was screaming. Overriding His human survival instinct was a violent subjection of self. He didn’t wait to "feel good" or find emotional equilibrium before moving toward the cross; He brought His will into submission until the internal chaos was destroyed by a single word: "Nevertheless." Cross vs. Couch: There are two types of peace we default to: The Peace of the Couch: Requires no sacrifice, allows us to avoid risk, protects our comfort, and essentially means, "I have no more questions." The Peace of the Cross: Requires a death to self-preservation, chooses obedience despite the absence of physical comfort, and means, "I have accepted the cost." Memorable Quotes From the Episode "This treats the Holy Spirit as a cosmic sedative rather than acknowledging His Lordship. It confuses the absence of conflict with the presence of God." "Ultimately, it allows the survival instinct—which naturally craves comfort and self-preservation—to masquerade as spiritual discernment." "When most people say, 'I have peace about this,' they are often saying, 'I have no more questions.' But when Jesus had peace, it meant, 'I have accepted the cost.'" "We are in danger of replacing the 'Peace of the Cross' (which requires a death) with the 'Peace of the Couch' (which allows us to nap)." Reflection Questions & Discussion Points Think about a recent decision where you used the phrase "I have peace about it." Looking back, was that peace born out of true alignment with God's design, or was it simply the relief of avoiding a difficult boundary, risk, or conflict? How does redefining peace from "emotional quietness" to "conquering chaos (Shalom)" change the way you navigate seasons of intense pressure or hardship? What is a specific area in your life right now where your natural survival instinct is screaming "no," but the Holy Spirit is inviting you to find authority over the struggle and say, "Nevertheless"? The Architecture of Intimacy

Podcast Show Notes: The Architecture of Intimacy Episode Description In a world obsessed with metrics, scaling, and outward results, it is easy to treat our spiritual lives like a performance review. In this episode, we dive deep into an article by Graeme Morris to explore why Kingdom multiplication isn't something we can force through sheer willpower—it is the natural overflow of intimacy. We unpack the Hebrew concept of yada (knowing), challenge the pressure of results-driven faith, and discuss how shifting our focus from the field to the Vine changes everything. Key Takeaways Results vs. Relationship: We often exhaust ourselves trying to produce what only God can conceive. When we prioritize output over union, we end up with religious activity that lacks the true DNA of the Kingdom. The Concept of Yada: In Genesis, the mandate to "be fruitful and multiply" is immediately followed by "Adam knew (yada) Eve." This isn't intellectual head-knowledge; it is covenantal, experiential intimacy. You cannot multiply what you have not first known in the secret place. The Divine Sequence: From Deuteronomy to John 15, the biblical order is precise. We do not obey to become fruitful. We abide, we love, and obedience becomes the natural "birth" of Christ’s character within us. Intimacy is the Engine: Faith is the external movement people see, but it is entirely powered by the internal hope that grows from consistent intimacy with the Father’s love. Memorable Quotes From the Episode "We have traded the power of a relationship for the pressure of a results-driven faith." "Intimacy is the engine of production. We do not obey to become fruitful; we 'know' God so deeply that his life eventually outgrows our own skin." "The multiplication of the Kingdom is not a work we do for God; it is the life of God being born through us." Reflection Questions & Discussion Points In what areas of your spiritual life or ministry have you been prioritizing the "output" over the "union"? How does shifting your primary directive from "working harder" to "abiding deeper" change your daily routine? What does it look like practically to guard your "secret place" and pursue yada intimacy with the Father this week?
