So for everybody else who doesn't understand what a haiku necessarily is and just has a vague general understanding, a haiku doesn't necessarily have to be 575 in English. That's mostly an English class convention based on Japanese haikus, 17 sound units or on arranged 575. Those units are usually described as morei. But they aren't equivalent to English syllables. For example, Tokyo has two syllables in English, but four moray in Japanese. To-o-kyo-o. The languages also package information very differently. So forcing a poem into 17 English syllables often makes it much wordier than a Japanese haiku. […]
