   The Pipeline Fight

While the news about climate change continues to get worse, the oil and gas industry is busy constructing more gas pipelines to bring more fossil fuel to the market for us to burn. In the news this week, Patti and Doug talk about oil producing countries blocking a worldwide plastic treaty, the top ten foods that contain microplastics, and how a new geothermal plant is producing energy for thousands of California customers. Then Rosemary Wessel, co-founder of No Fracked Gas in Mass and the Clean Energy Transition Program Director of the Berkshire Environmental Action Team talks about her work advocating for clean, renewable energy and against the expansion of natural gas pipelines in the Northeast.

Reducing Breast Cancer Risk - with Dr. Jenny Kay

Less than ten percent of all breast cancer cases are the result of inherited genes. That means that most cases can be related to environmental exposures, including chemicals in our food, our air, our water, and the products that surround us. In the news this week, Patti and Doug talk about a new report on the environmental links to cancer, the legal case against “plastic recycling fraud,” and how climate change and wildfire smoke are limiting the ability of rainforests to absorb carbon dioxide. Then Dr. Jenny Kay of the Silent Spring Institute talks about her work identifying the things in our environment that can increase the risk of breast cancer, including products commonly found in many homes.

IT’S ALL ABOUT FOOD with Dr. Larry Palevsky

There is nothing more important for your health, well-being, and longevity than the food you eat, but our current food system isn’t helping you. In the news this week, Patti and Doug talk about the politics of food, data centers using tricks to avoid regulation of their emissions, and a UN report on the importance of restoring forests. Then pediatrician Dr. Larry Palevsky talks about the new food pyramid, and how consumers need to know more about how their food is grown (or manufactured) and what’s actually in it.
