[…] So that can create something of an arms race, a competitive escalation of election spending, particularly between the major parties who are vying to form government. And I would also say that in doing that, an arms race is pushing more money than needed into Australian elections. And the effect of that is that it takes time away from from other things. It means politicians need to spend more time and effort on fundraising. It means political parties become more reliant on major donors to fund their campaigns. And all of that together creates these kind of fertile conditions for wealthy interests to have undue influence over policymaking. […]
