So people had been living in this part of Massachusetts for thousands of years before Europeans arrived. Archaeological material preserved by Dover Historical Society includes indigenous stone tools dating human activity in the area back to roughly 5,000 years. The region was later associated with the Nipmuc people, whose territory extended through portions of central and eastern Massachusetts. European settlement began around 1635, when the area that eventually became Dover was part of the much larger Dedham Grant. […]
