    Henry L Gates -Black Box

This week on Bedside Books, we're diving deep into Black history, identity, and resilience with three thought-provoking books that will leave you questioning, enlightened, and maybe even a little bit shook. First up, Henry Louis Gates Jr.'s "The Black Box" takes us on a literary journey through Black expression, exploring how Black writers found their voice and created a sense of belonging in a world that wasn't always welcoming. (Spoiler alert: It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows.) Then, Michael Harriot's "Black AF History" flips the script on American history, revealing the untold stories, the inconvenient truths, and the downright audacity of Black folks throughout the ages. Get ready to unlearn some things and have your mind blown. Finally, Jarvis Masters' "That Bird Has My Wings" shares a powerful story of resilience and redemption. Wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death row, Masters finds hope and strength in Buddhism. It's a reminder that even in the darkest of times, the human spirit can soar. Join us as we unpack these books, challenge conventional narratives, and explore the complexities of the Black experience. We'll laugh, we'll learn, and we'll probably get a little bit angry (in a productive way, of course). So grab your favorite beverage, settle into your comfiest chair, and get ready for a conversation that will leave you inspired and ready to take on the world. Key Takeaways: Black history is American history, and it's time we told the whole truth. Black voices matter, and they have the power to change the world. Resilience and hope can be found even in the most difficult circumstances. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy (https://acast.com/privacy) for more information.

    Victor LaValle - Lone Woman

This book is old-school kinda good. Tina took us back with this one. But I plan to pick it up on her rep. It’s 1915 and Adelaide Henry carries an enormous steamer trunk with her wherever she goes. It’s locked at all times. Because when the trunk opens, people around Adelaide start to disappear. “Lone Women blends shimmering prose, an unforgettable cast of adventurers who find horror and sisterhood in a brutal landscape, and a portrait of early-twentieth-century America like you’ve never seen. And at its heart is the gripping story of a woman desperate to bury her past—or redeem it.” Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy (https://acast.com/privacy) for more information.
