<p>Op Hugo de Groot werd doelbewust karaktermoord gepleegd. Is karaktermoord in tijden van sociale media en „grensoverschrijdend gedrag“ terug van weggeweest? Of is dit van alle tijden? Op Slot Loevestein debatteren Jort Kelder en Grotius-biograaf Henk Nellen erover met Helmer Helmers en Leonard Ornstein. Historicus Helmers is senior researcher aan de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen en publiceerde over karaktermoord op een beroemde tijdgenoot van Hugo de Groot: Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. Politiek journalist Ornstein werkt aan de Universiteit Leiden aan een proefschrift over Pim Fortuyn. Op politicus Fortuyn werd, net als in het geval van Oldenbarnevelt, zowel karaktermoord als moord gepleegd.</p>
