The Monthly Project series allows participants to follow a single compositional prompt as a shared class project. For this month's project we are thrilled to have guitarist and composer Joseph Allred. Buy Joseph's work here.
The compositional prompt reads as follows:
The definition of the act of field recording is to capture sound outside of the recording studio. The field can be your kitchen, your backyard, a city street, truly anywhere beyond the controlled and acoustically treated recording environment.
The act of field recording is simple but is by no means passive, even less so if we involve the act of musical performance within the context of the field. It can be a voice memo of your friend playing the guitar at a campfire, it can be an overnight drop rig capturing the activity of nocturnal insects, it can be a shitty tape recording of your neighborhood bird songs captured on a Walkman. What’s crucial is to record with intention and illustrate the field for your listener.
For this month’s project we are to perform with this site specific intentionality in mind. You are to pick a space in the field that speaks to you as a performer, one that you can perform in duo with perhaps, and you are to record a 3-5 minute improvisation within this space using an acoustic recording device, meaning something that uses a microphone that captures vibration in the air and not a DI input.
What does it mean to perform in duo with your field? Does it mean toying with the natural reverberation of the space? Does it mean to imitate the sounds around you in a call and response fashion? Think about this when you decide where to record in the field.
Your choice of instrument can be entirely acoustic or electronic so as long as you have a means of amplifying any electronic signal with some sort of mobile speaker in the field. We need to be able to hear your choice of instrument as well as the space it inhabits at all times.
